Proposed bill would ban minors from attending drag shows in Iowa

A felony?!:

Exposing minors to drag shows would be criminalized under a proposed bill in the Iowa Legislature that critics say is overly broad and could potentially target artistic performances.

The House Education Subcommittee on Tuesday advanced House Study Bill 158, which would bar minors from attending drag shows or performances where a performer “exhibits a gender identity that is different than the performer’s gender assigned at birth through the use of clothing, makeup, accessories or other gender signifiers.”

The bill defines performances as singing, lip-synching, dances and readings.

Under the legislation, an adult who knowingly takes a minor to a drag show would be guilty of a Class D felony, which is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of at least $1,025, but not more than $10,245. The Class D felony charge also would apply to business operators who knowingly let minors attend drag performances at their venues. They could face a fine of $10,000 for each minor in attendance.

The legislation comes as LGBTQ+ pride events, including drag story times where drag performers read to children at libraries and bookstores, have been targeted by conservative efforts to restrict them. Opponents of drag story times argue they expose children to “sexualized behavior.”

Can I get arrested now, for posting a 30 yr old Bud Light Commercial...???

No, I’m just asking you. The logic of your statement dictates you would believe it’s fine. If you don’t, please explain.
They aren’t the same thing.

I raised two amazing kids in a less than conventional way. A way I saw fit. I’m less than perfect, but I’m proud of the adults they have become.

I know this is apples to hand grenades, but it has been about -30 windchill where I live the last 3 days. I have seen toddlers and a baby woefully underdressed for the weather, which is pretty freaking dangerous. I don’t think my kids seeing men dressed as women would do near as much harm as them losing a couple digits to frostbite because I was a negligent parent.

How is it not? You specifically stated, “I don’t need the government telling me what is/is not too much for my children.” In other words, parents should always have the right to decide. Fair enough. But that literally means a parent can take a child to any kind of sex show they want to. That applies to strip clubs and everything else…

So PG-13 and R rated films are okay, but a drag show is a bridge too far?

‘Merica.

Flip Wilson and Geraldine are rolling over in their grave.

They aren’t the same things. This isn’t that difficult.

Or, ya know, try and keep minors from attending them.
And we’re back to penalizing the parents who take their kids to them. You want these shows to better advertise what the type of content will be on display, cool. It’s not then also their fault if they do that and parents take their kids anyways.

Are men who recognize themselves as men dressed in drag to provide entertainment, the same as gender confused transvestites attempting to normalize their lifestyles?

No one cared about the entertainment Flip Wilson provided, he and everyone knew he was a man providing entertainment
