Have not watched any Boilermaker games this year. Anyone have a capsule scouting report?

Offensively challenged, not as good at defense as they used to be. They are very inconsistent as a team, they will have games were they play putrid(usually on the road) and games where they smoke their opponents.(Home usually) It is going to depend on which team shows up, I think Iowa could struggle since it is at Purdue and Purdue has always been a struggle for Iowa.

From what I have watched to-date (probably at least 10 games):
- Play really tough defense (especially Easter)
- Have played lights out at home (beat MSU bad), but have struggled on the road
- Have a couple guys that can get hot from the 3 (Stefanovic, Proctor, and/or Hunter)
- Tough on the boards with Williams and Harms
- Haarms has struggled shooting since falling/hurting his hip, but still good shot blocker
- Williams is very good around the basket
- Overall, not a great shooting team
- It would be a big win in their house, but will be tough to do. Great crowd/fans and they are fighting for a bubble spot

Mackey Arena is a tough environment for sure, I agree.
No way Haarms can guard Garza if that is their game plan. I expect double teams.

PD doesn’t look good offensively. The most they’ve scored in the B1G is 83 in OT at home vs MN. Only scored 37 @IL. They’re slightly better at O rbs and steals than Iowa. In big wins vs VA and MSU in W Lafayette they held them to 40 and 42 pts. So D is still PD’s equalizer. Iowa scores their average = they win.

Expect PD bigs to pound Luka so their guards can devote themselves to blanketing JW and CJ. But this is essentially the strategy Iowa faces from here out.

Purdue isn't nearly as good as past teams, but playing at Mackey Arena has been a nightmare for Iowa and most other teams. Again, if Iowa's key players (the big 4) stay out of early foul trouble, we have a shot.

If Iowa loses to Purdue, I will be okay with it, as long as Purdue doesn't get a big game from that balding white dude who looks like he's in his 50's and should be playing on Saturdays at the YMCA while wearing a headband and Kurt Rambis goggles.

Evan Boudreaux had an Iowa offer but selected Dartmouth before grad transferring to Purdue. Not sure how he got two years of eligibility. I recall he had some snarky Tweet at Iowa when he chose Dartmouth or maybe Fran backed off him.

Step 1. Never expect to beat Purdue in West Lafayette
Step 2. Be pleasantly surprised when we win.
Step 3. Profit

Mad respect for their program but they seem to be a bipolar team this year, which usually describes us and not them. We’ve competed in every Big Ten game and have just come up short at the end in the 4 losses, including 2 when we were missing CJ but still kept the games close. Purdue has had their doors blown off a couple times by Illinois plus a double-digit road loss to Nebby, but then also has 29 pt wins against MSU and Virginia. Who knows what team shows up?

They have been better for sure. Still a good team. KenPom has them at 28, with the 77th ranked offense and 16th defense. They just stole one at Northwestern, trailed 58-50 with 4 minutes left and scored the last 11 points to win.

They will get after you on defense everywhere. If Garza is not in foul trouble and is able to play 35 minutes, Iowa stands a great chance.Toussaint likely needs to contribute some as Purdue's defense invites a guy who can go to the basket. We shall see what happens.

As others have said, Purdue is absolutely bipolar. On the road, they are terrible... they have only won 1 road game and that was against Ohio.

Obviously at home they are much better.

I know it's early, but if there was a point spread, Iowa would be a +1. Certainly not insurmountable.....

For context, Purdue has only 2 less conference wins than us right now.

Correct, league is tough. Tough part for Purdue is they have zero games left against either Northwestern or Nebraska, Iowa still has Neb at home. Purdue still has road games at Iowa Indiana, Wisconsin, OSU, home with Iowa, Michigan, Rutgers, Indiana, PSU. Zero easy ones left for Boilermakers.

Maybe this is common, but Fran needs to chat it up with the officials before the game to see what they will be watching for from Garza

I think Iowa recruited him.

...because it's super annoying that Fran and fans here at HR really wanted him to be playing in our YMCA.

I think Iowa recruited him.
I think you are correct. He is not a bad player at all, not a star, but very solid player. He goes to the boards and has a decent 3 point shot as well. Force him to put ball on the floor and he will be somewhat neutralized.

Last win for Iowa MBB in W. Lafayette was Jan 2, 2016 ...Hawks were unranked and the Boilers were ranked 14th at the time.

Prior to that Iowa hadn't won on Purdue's court since Feb 1, 2006 ...Iowa was ranked 23rd and Purdue was unranked.

As others have said, Purdue is completely bipolar this year. We're all realizing what a special player Carsen Edwards was here. We just don't have an alpha dog or a guy who can take a game over like Edwards. The key to the game will be how Purdue starts. We won the MSU and UVA games in the first 7 minutes. Those teams walked into a buzz saw in Mackey. If Purdue starts hot (especially SS. He's a great 3 pt shooter in Mackey), hits a few 3s and jumps out to like a 12-2 start with the crowd going crazy, it could be a long night for Iowa. On the other hand, if our shooters are cold and Iowa defense can force tough shots, then they can frustrate Purdue and our offense can get really ugly.
On D, Purdue is very susceptible to athletic guards who can penetrate and finish. We struggled with IL guards. Haarms is 7'3 and a good rim protector but pretty soft. Garza will push him around. Tre Williams is 6'9, 270 and really effective down on the block. Should be a good game but Purdue is desperate and playing for their tourney lives. I like the Boilers at home.

The Boilers are at #11 in the nation for Scoring Defense allowing 60.4 per game. They are at #286 in the nation for Scoring Offense at 67.2 per game. They shoot 33.3% from 3 and are at #184 nationally. They're at #61 nationally in Rebound Margin. We're at #75, so I don't see a huge discrepancy here.
I believe that our shot selection has to be good. Need to be patient if we can't speed them up. Go to Garza as much as we can because I don't think Haarms will stop him in the post. Guard the 3, guard the 3, and guard the 3. Stefanovich can hit them when he's on.
Blot out the crowd, stay with the game plan and don't turn the ball over.

Sounds like the three pointer is there only fighting chance. I really hope Fran’s game plan includes a lot of man to man.

The game will be played on Wednesday. The results will be known sometime early next week!!!
Seriously though, best of luck to you guys. You have an excellent team this year, and Purdue is a bit down, but still tough at Mackey. We are playing for our tourney lives also. We know this is a bit of a transition year for us, and next year we will be much better. I expect a close one in Mackey, and a not so close one at CHA. Peace.
