Purdue

They have been better for sure. Still a good team. KenPom has them at 28, with the 77th ranked offense and 16th defense. They just stole one at Northwestern, trailed 58-50 with 4 minutes left and scored the last 11 points to win.

They will get after you on defense everywhere. If Garza is not in foul trouble and is able to play 35 minutes, Iowa stands a great chance.Toussaint likely needs to contribute some as Purdue's defense invites a guy who can go to the basket. We shall see what happens.

It add to your point: It is pretty obvious that JoeT is a great weapon for Iowa against teams who apply a ton of ball pressure—maybe Purdue, Rutgers. But he still hasn’t figured out how to play effectively when he is basically left alone.
It will be see what Purdue does with him.

I think Iowa has to do three things to win this (note that my predictions are almost always wrong):

1) Play with the same disciplined intensity that we have in the Wisconsin & Illinois wins.
2) Have to have our 3 point shot falling....we have been in a bit of a slump and still win games, but Joe W needs to get hot.
3) Put Connor on their main 3 point guy and don't let him get it going, accompanied by a good defensive effort.

I seriously doubt that Painter is going to leave Haarms out on an island to try and stop Garza. I suspect we will primarily see Williams on him trying to push him off the block with Haarms providing the doubleteam.

They really don't play Williams and Harms together much. Against Northwestern, Williams played 23 minutes and Harmes 17, they were never on the floor at the same time. It's possible they could play them together, but Purdue can't really spread the floor with both out there.

I think most everything depends on whether or not Garza can play 35 minutes. If he's not in foul trouble, Iowa will be in it the whole way. If he can only go 24 minutes like against Maryland, Iowa is in trouble. Iowa was +2 when Garza played against Maryland, -12 the rest of the way. What he does for Iowa is so crucial to winning on the road.

Agree on your other points. Iowa made 10-23 3's against Illinois. That is getting it done from the arc. Wieskamp is at 38% for the year on 3's, which is good. Crazy good against Top 50 teams, at 44%.

Adam Haluska told us on Monday that Mackey Arena was one of his favorite gyms to shoot in. Maybe this will hold true for the Hawkeyes this year as well.

As others have said, Purdue is absolutely bipolar. On the road, they are terrible... they have only won 1 road game and that was against Ohio.

Obviously at home they are much better.
We won at Northwestern last week. We have played better on the road recently. We boat race teams at Mackey. Always have. Always will. That said, we are mediocre compared to most Purdue teams. Very young with a below average basketball IQ. I would expect to lose by 15-20 at
Iowa... but it’s at Purdue. Iowa is ranked and will likely lose by 5-10 points. If Garza struggles you will get tuned up by 20 plus. You are a better team than us all things considered

Except Minnesota and Illinois.

You guys fought and scrapped to beat NW. You had no business winning that game but Purdue just executed better down the stretch. No such thing as a bad win...

That said, I think you guys win a close game but probably shouldn't. Like you said, Mackey is a tough place to win. I think Haarms will struggle with Garza but since it is a road game, Garza will get two fouls in less than 10 minutes. One will be soft.

We also could’ve won at Maryland, Michigan and Rutgers... all one possession games. Lost in OT in a neutral site game to FSU. And this is our worst team in years.

This game is absolutely vital if Iowa wants to be a legit contender. They currently sit tied for 4th and just 1 game out of first. With Nebraska coming in on Sunday, these 2 wins would put Iowa at 9-4 in conference play and at least a tie for 2nd place in the BIG Ten since Illinois and Maryland play each other on Friday. Pretty amazing to think this team can be in 2nd place and just 1 game out of first heading into the middle of February.

Also - Things get much more difficult for Iowa down the stretch, so this game is huge.

Illinois is very good and a brutal matchup for us. For any team to expect to win in Mackey is nuts.

Any good team "expects" to win any game, regardless of venue. But Purdue is good and is favored at home for good reason. The analytics (KenPom) like Purdue's team, the issue with Purdue has been such wide variance in performance. Housed twice by Illinois, lose by 14 at Nebraska, then turn around and obliterate Wisconsin and Michigan State. I would expect the good Purdue to be on display tonight. Iowa can keep it close if Garza isn't in foul trouble.

What's the key to the game? As the great Ray Meyer said "we've just got to score more points than they do."
We all know we're not getting any love from the zebras. We need Luka to stay in the game and not pick up any touchy fouls. If Fran starts Kriener and Garza, I hope Ryan helps out through shooting by pulling his man away from the basket. That may clear a little space for Luka to operate. I really believe this is one we could get. Watch the turnovers and defend.

Kevin Kugler and Shon Morris calling the action tonight at 6pm on BTN. Set your DVR's, pop the corn (later), select your favorite beverage (mine is 100% Colombian coffee), and have a towel handy to bite on as Tark did, when the zebras give the love to the Broilers. Enjoy!

If we shoot and play defense like we are capable, we could squeak out a close one. If it becomes 5 vs. 8 nothing will make a difference.

If Iowa loses to Purdue, I will be okay with it, as long as Purdue doesn't get a big game from that balding white dude who looks like he's in his 50's and should be playing on Saturdays at the YMCA while wearing a headband and Kurt Rambis goggles.

As others have said, Purdue is completely bipolar this year. We're all realizing what a special player Carsen Edwards was here. We just don't have an alpha dog or a guy who can take a game over like Edwards. The key to the game will be how Purdue starts. We won the MSU and UVA games in the first 7 minutes. Those teams walked into a buzz saw in Mackey. If Purdue starts hot (especially SS. He's a great 3 pt shooter in Mackey), hits a few 3s and jumps out to like a 12-2 start with the crowd going crazy, it could be a long night for Iowa. On the other hand, if our shooters are cold and Iowa defense can force tough shots, then they can frustrate Purdue and our offense can get really ugly.
On D, Purdue is very susceptible to athletic guards who can penetrate and finish. We struggled with IL guards. Haarms is 7'3 and a good rim protector but pretty soft. Garza will push him around. Tre Williams is 6'9, 270 and really effective down on the block. Should be a good game but Purdue is desperate and playing for their tourney lives. I like the Boilers at home.

not to pay myself too hard on the back, but pretty much called this one.
