QBs - quick take

Good luck with that. The 2023 unicorn is unlikely to happen again.
Why's that? Iowa won 8 games the previous season with the worst offense in the country.

Good defense and special teams are the most repeatable, and together, most impactful facets in football

What I do know is that the biggest scrimmage of fall camp is this Saturday, but closed to everyone. Perhaps something will leak but this week of practice and that scrimmage will go a long way in deciding between Cade and Sully + the WR rotation. I did have a source that was at practice last year on video team but isn't doing it this year, sorry.

What I think will happen…
Cade will start, KF will give him an opportunity to lead in a game situation.
KF said that they have considered a “package” for Sullivan.
They will do 3 series to 1 and they will see who moves the ball better.

What should happen…
If all things are equal, you take the QB that’s the better runner/scrambler and make them defend 11 instead of 10.
(See… Brad Banks, Drew Tate, CJ Beathard)

As a history major around forty years ago, I love "Saving Private Ryan". I can barely watch it because of one scene. The scene where Private Mellish is in hand to hand combat and is slowly, painfully stabbed in the heart. I almost consider that scene too graphic to endure so I usually fast forward through it.

I have no answers as far as Iowa's offense is concerned. I also have no expectations that Iowa will be any more than say, 10% better this season than last. That in itself would be a wonderful improvement over last season.

Compared to the statues we've had throwing the ball the last few seasons, I though Sullivan did a very nice job of evading the rush. That in itself should allow the offense to improve to some extent.

Well the good news is either can scramble and that is all we want. If you can get the 5-7 without getting hammered, then do it!! But yeah I like your point. We have a guy who can line up at wr or rb (you could use 2 rb in the backfield). I think most DC's are going to want to know where he is lined up. Most DC's are going to want to try and cover our TE's as well. I think just from tape most are going to want to know if Wetjen is out there. So yeah I agree the more we make them account for, the more honest they are going to have to play. That is another reason I like Lester saying that they are going to spread the ball around. The more real threats we have for them to account for, the better.

Seemed to be a lot of hash to sideline throws, didn't see many if any routes over the middle or stretching the D.

I think Sully takes over by game 3.
Me too. Either due to injury or Cade not being able to complete his passes.

Sully has shown he has a high completion rate. Northwestern is famous for the quick, short, high percentage pass. If Lester can incorporate that into the scheme with Sullivan, that alone should improve the offense significantly.

Maybe some of that had to do with Lachey being out?
If we only have 1 pass catcher that goes over the middle, that equates to "not good". We have to have TE's, Slots, etc that can go over the middle and especially need WR's that can stretch the defense and open up the middle.

May have been worst game of Stanley career. Also threw interception on first down near goal line.
Nate had more than a few fails in big moments. But he wasn't a guy that you would say "go out and make something happen to win the game".
I do think he was the perfect qb for Kirk. A big qb who follows orders. Nate was never an all B1G qb, but he was above the average of the typical game manager qb. Not a favorite of mine, but certainly a solid above average B1G qb.
Personally for me, though, he's in the tier below the best qbs of the Kirk era. Banks, Tate, Stanzi, Beathard. The thing they all had, that I suspect Kirk hates, is that they would go off script and make a play. They are also the guys who were the most fun to watch. I think it's great when you can't predict with virtual certainty what the qb is going to do.

I think you are wrong when you imply Kirk would hate to have a QB improvise. Every coach loves having a QB who can convert 3rd downs by improvising when the play called breaks down. But first you have to have a guy who has the ability to do it. You don’t want guys like Petras and Deacon trying to improvise too much. Hopefully this year Cade and Sullivan will be able to make a few of those plays to keep the chains moving. Go Hawks !

I think Sullivan for sure will be able to improvise. At least from what little I’ve seen of him.

Stanley had solid stats his last two years but would agree that was not in that upper tier. Was elite QB sneaks! Also, he had amazing weapons around him.

I do believe Kirk likes guys that can improvise but he also wants good decision making and from the pocket ability. Not tons of guys that check all those boxes but recruiting guys like Hill and Petras means the most you are EVER going to have is 2 out of 3.
