Question about IA hoops Schollies.................

I have a theory on that. They both (Nunge, Garza) pretty much committed on the same weekend or he might not have. But since the odds are somebody transfers anyway, Fran played the odds.

In other words, I think Conner's going to get a scholarship.

Yes, the odds are someone probably will transfer.

Jeesh, talk about overkill, this thread is one of those. The only interesting question, imo, is there a walk on limit for players in basketball and/or football? Go at it guys.

Good question. I doubt it for basketball. Tom Davis used to have the grey team, so that was allot of walkons.

For the preferred walkons, Im fairly sure they get all the same benefits as scholorship players as far as tutoring, meals, rooms ect. Not positive but I think thats the case.

The cost of in-state is nothing to Fran. The only reason I see Fran giving a scholarship to his son is if there's one available and no other person to fill it. The more Fran produces, the more he makes. Why would you give your son a scholarship of you can potentially get a player to help create wins, which could increase your salary. I don't know his contract but I would think he might get a bonus for getting to the tourney or reaching a certain level.

Another reason for Fran to pay is because it's been posted that his son might want to play baseball. If he's on scholarship for basketball and he's distracted (or people think he's distracted) by baseball, that could be a problem. If Fran pays, then there's no expectations on his son and he can choose to do what's best for him.

From what I've heard, if you are on scholarship for one sport, that always has required priority over the second sport. If Connor was on basketball scholarship, offseason hoops weight training would take priority over a baseball game. If he wants to play both, being a walkon gives him the greatest flexibility.

Frans a smart guy with a business degree. Basketball is the business he is in.

Hes smart enough to realize a competitive advantage when one presents itself.

You make some good points. As has RocknRollface. Seems odd to me though that they went through an actual offer if the intent all along was to walk-on. And why the cloak and dagger when just announcing early that Conner would be a walk-on would have been a great way to counter all the other recruiters from other schools who were using Conner coming in as a reason to scare off other point guards?

The baseball thing does have me doubting my guesswork. Especially since as a walk-on it takes all the pressure off. You guys have me wondering, but it wouldn't be fun all agreeing so I'm sticking to Conner gets a scholarship if we have a transfer.

I would be more than surprised if Connor is redshirted next season. He has been a player-in-waiting for his father his entire life. One way or the other, he will see the floor next year.

Its probably a fluid situation. It just allows Fran to add another guy if he wants to. Its an added flexibility that normally inst there.

I can guarantee you, if Cmac plays, and struggles there will still be plenty of expectations and upset fans, and it won't matter one bit if he's on scholly or not.

I believe the schollie thing will "work itself out".

How, without anybody xfr'ing, no clue at this moment. But I could see two to three guys currently on the roster that I assume can read the minutes played chart, and look at who is coming in, and decide to bail.

Don't want it to happen, but it also wouldn't surprise me either.

So..."it'll work itself out".

This^^^^

Connor does not redshirt...come on Man

Same with any player everywhere.
I respectfully disagree. For one the poster said if Fran paid for his schooling there would be no expectations. I said this was totally false. Second, your not saying that the coaches sons will not be under a different microscope then other players? The number of posts on Connor and Patrick, (who won't even be at Iowa for almost three years), says this is the case.

Sombody will always complain about any player that has a bad game.

People aren't questioning whether the McCaffreys should be on the team or not, its understood tbey are good players, and no one is expecting them to be all americans either.

The only way I see them getting a disproportionate amount of criticism is if they really struggle yet get big minutes inspite of it.

Which I dont see happening because its going to be a very deep team with allot of talent.

I think your approach is very reasoned and correct RRface. Hopefully they and Weiskamp live up to their advance billing, and we have a lot to look forward too.

Fran, like any other sane P5 coach making 1.5 million a year, will pay Connor and/or Patrick's tuition if it helps him manage his roster and win games. Winning is far more valuable to him than tuition costs him.

My best guess is that they will be moved on and off scholarship based on the need for scholarships. Connor will probably walk on for a couple years and then go on scholarship because of the current imbalance in our scholarship distribution. Williams, Wagner, Baer, and Ellingson will be graduating as Patrick comes in so, with those 4 scholarships available, he is likely to be on scholarship from the start.

Good call, he needs to get his dad to pay his tuition because his asshole basketball coach won't let him play baseball instead of lifting weights. Maybe he should just have his dad yell at the basketball coach instead. Logic.

This might be the most nonsensical/contrived take I have seen yet. I don't understand why people feel the need to come up with a crazy theory when the simple explanation is obviously true and staring them in the face.

How do the rankings work for Rivals? I noticed Iowa has 2 top 150 kids (112 & 117) for next year and we are no where near the top 35 teams.

Meanwhile ISU has 2 players (31 & 116) and they are rated 25th?

Also noticed there must be some "shady" recruiting going on. How in the Hell does washington land that good of class? Also Western Kentucky top 10 class???

Thank you for completely misrepresenting what I posted.

I believe it was discussed on the Hawkeye Report podcast a month or two ago. Please go listen to that, then bash on the publisher of this web site for what he said on the matter.

I would imagine the ranking works just like in football. They basically add the scores of all the recruits. Iowa only has two scholarships to add for their score, and our 4 star "walk on" score may not be added in at all, since he's not getting a scholly. Other schools composite score is higher because their bringing four or five players. At least this is my assumption. Would this be correct? "Bueller"..............

I'm guessing (and I think other have said it too) that in the beginning Conner was the only commit so it made sense to give him a scholarship if ones available. Any time Iowa can claim it got a commitment from a 4* recruit (I believe he was 4*, to lazy to look up), that's a positive for the program. Whether Conner is on scholarship or not, the other PG recruits are going to wonder about playing time with the coaches son on the team.

I do agree with you that Conner will get a scholarship if there's a transfer and I have a feeling someone will. I just don't know who. With Jok gone there's more playing time available for the guards so I'm not sure why any of them would leave. It's the big's where we have excess. They've all showed to be decent players so I would hate to lose any of them. The one guy who didn't get playing time was Dailey. And actually I'm really hoping he stays. Next year Iowa needs a player that can drive to the basket. It doesn't have to be a PG, just anyone. I don't see that out of any of the guys who have played. I'm dreaming that Dailey can maybe be that guy.
