I would never claim Hitler represents Christianity. I only state that he was a Christian. The Catholic Church does represent Christianity to most of the world, but I have been to hard core Christian sects that are so different, I can understand how they don't see it that way. Nonetheless Christians have a habit of saying other Christians aren't part of their religion. Take Mormons for instance. Many Christians try to say they aren't Christian, but they are. It's a big religion, just like Islam, or Hindu. There are lots of flavors.
BTW, I was an alter boy. I'm pretty sure I was never molested though. I remember as a small child hearing the bells ring as the pastor blessed communion. At first I thought it was magic, then I noticed the boy ringing them. When I got to ring them, I thought it was awesome. My people (Cajuns) migrated to a swamp to be able to worship our God our way.
I get the power of religion and how men can use it to manipulate people. Eventually the faith instilled in me from birth gave way to skepticism and logic. The pressure didn't stop though. I didn't tell my mother straight out that I am an atheist until I was about 33. She still holds out hope that I will return to God.
I have spent time with many Muslims, Hindi, and of course Christians. I've seen the good and bad from all of them. In the end, people are people. Some are good and some, not as much. Those who aren't good, in my opinion, have lost their faith in people more so than a god. Most are natural followers. This has been scientifically proven many times, from simple market research to more extreme studies such as Milgram. Religion was a pretty easy way to control and govern people. I think it will eventually die out as far as the mythical parts. Men (humans) are men though. Political parties and groups are becoming the new religion in many cases.
Free thinkers will always (absent a extinction threatening event) be a small minority and ostracized. People are naturally opposed to those that go against the pack.
