Duluth is a hidden gem. Love the area.My goal is to have a summer home in Duluth, MN or Door County, WI and then a summer home somewhere in the SW (most likely AZ). Duluth is so great in the Summer.

I feel like Dany in GOT when seeing the undead horde for the first time: you have to see it to know. and now I know.So here's what everyone fails to understand. There's midwest hot, and then there's Florida hot. One is nothing like the other, and the worst part of it is that you're going down there for outside activities. I lived in Tampa for 3 years and liked to golf. I didn't swing a golf club from June-August the entire time I lived down there. Time of day doesn't matter. Too ****ing hot.
Would you like to go out sometime?
LOLBack off she's mine.
LOL
Still waiting on the financials and references…
Let it be known…I am not willing to be “a nurse and a purse”…😎
So do IAll I need is someone in the kitchen/bedroom.
First time I ever saw the ocean was at Rehoboth Beach. We’re an hour to Rehoboth. I think it would be another 20 minutes to Bethany.
We are in an opposite situation. My parents are in their 80s and despite my urging to relocate near me or my brother on the east coast, they have elected to buy into a Pinehurst retirement community with graduated care. My dad's physical health is failing faster than my mom's, and it is frustrating when they have incidents where he falls and then neither my brother nor I are around to do anything about it. Not sure what can be done about that. We're probably close to 10 years to retiring but we will move as soon as my parents do. Kids are in college and the house is over 3000sqft. Ready to downsize to someplace cooler.
My mom keeps threatening to move to an assisted living place near my brother. We can't move until they decide to.
This summer we're looking at renting an AirBnB somewhere cooler for the month of August. Work during the days and fish in the evenings.
Yeah, my dad is ruining my mom's health. He refuses to use a walker and leans on her a lot. Doesn't do his PT, eats poorly. We are in an opposite situation. I’m confident she would choose me over you though. Not saying you’re bad though.😉🙏Back off she's mine.
Wife is retiring in a year, I'm probably more like 6-10 years out. I Love what I do.
So do I
This. plan to travel for a few months to a different place each winter but keep him base in Iowa.Okay boomer, LOL.
Retirement is still a few years away with plans to spend each winter taking a trip to anywhere in the world we want to see but spending most of the year at our home base in IC where most of our family is now. That could change but we’re flexible in that regard.
I think it will be an adjustment, for sure. That said, it's been our plan all along. She's had a 30-plus year career as a public servant and her retirement date has been a bullseye on the calendar for awhile now.You don't think it will be hard to go to work while your wife stays home enjoying retirement?
For me it would be difficult.
I think my wife would hate me if I stayed home and watched her leave for work. LOL
Rented a house there two years ago at Sandestine Golf and Resort. Definitely busy.We have been to Sandestin before and I did not particularly care for it. The beaches were pristine and beautiful, but they were jam packed with Texans and Louisianans. Not our cup of tea.
Yes, that is where we stayed, but in a condo. The area in/by the resort with all of the restaurants had a bit of a fake feel to it, but it was fun. Overall it was fine - just not where I would allocate future resources.Rented a house there two years ago at Sandestine Golf and Resort. Definitely busy.
Kind of its own community. About time to leave when I figured everything out. Liked being able to use golf cart to go everywhere.Yes, that is where we stayed, but in a condo. My oldest son who lives in Austin TX and who is known for wearing hoodies and jeans in the dead of summer echoed the same opinions after attending a wedding in Florida a couple of summers ago. Completely different type of heat and misery than he was accustomed to.So here's what everyone fails to understand. There's midwest hot, and then there's Florida hot. Yep...our place is at Carrabelle beach. Half block off the water. Look forward to evening walks on the beach. Plus it's a big fishing location and I'm big into fishing.I live 14 minutes from the ocean but it’s just not a draw for me. It’s not uncommon among us locals although about 2-3 times a year I enjoy a walk along the beach at sunset.
I actually do like the Panhandle beaches more than the Atlantic (except for New Smyrna Beach) and even though Destin is overcrowded I really like it there. If only I could afford it. 🫤
I don't know if it was just the year, but I was in Wichita Falls for a couple of months TDY in the USAF circa 1998 or so. It was hotter than Florida. Like every day it was at least 102, with many days getting up to 107 or so. At night it would get down to the upper 80s, and then crank back up again at dawn. Every night the local news would run stories on brown recluses and such fleeing the heat and trying to get into houses, and to beware of them. And that was the best part of being in Wichita Falls. Just a miserable place with no redeeming qualities. My oldest son who lives in Austin TX and who is known for wearing hoodies and jeans in the dead of summer echoed the same opinions after attending a wedding in Florida a couple of summers ago. Maybe it was a timing thing? The beach we were at was huge with relatively few people. We have been to Sandestin before and I did not particularly care for it. The beaches were pristine and beautiful, but they were jam packed with Texans and Louisianans. Not our cup of tea.
Sounds like St Louis. Hotter than FL in the summer, no breeze at all, no trees contribute to the misery.I don't know if it was just the year, but I was in Wichita Falls for a couple of months TDY in the USAF circa 1998 or so. One of my best friends, his grandparents retired at Pinehurst and I often heard the same. They loved it.My parents lived in charlotte and had a condo in pinehurst. Retired and sold their place in charlotte. Pinehurst is a great community for retirees if you are at least a social member of the clubs. Great food at 1/2 price for residents via some deal they have. They almost never have to cook. It is a benefit they have with all of the golfers constantly there paying full boat on vacation. If NC is in your sights I would check out pinehurst, even if you don’t golf.
No idea. This was in July I think maybe 10 years ago. My wife's aunt and uncle had a condo there they let us stay in.Maybe it was a timing thing? The beach we were at was huge with relatively few people.
We have family in STL and I have been there a lot. It gets hot in the summer but it's a whole different category of misery south of Misery and south of Oklahoma.Sounds like St Louis. Hotter than FL in the summer, no breeze at all, no trees contribute to the misery.
Oh yeah. Wouldn't catch me dead in FL in July. Even the beach is too hot.No idea. This was in July I think maybe 10 years ago. My wife's aunt and uncle had a condo there they let us stay in.
We are retired for a few years but not moving. My wife wants or needs to be close to her sister and brother who she helps (without getting in to it). We moved back here 40 years ago because she wanted to be by her family and they talked and still talk a lot together.Did you move, or do plan to move when you retire? And why or why not?
Wichita Falls used to have the Hotter Than Hell Bike Race too IIRC.I don't know if it was just the year, but I was in Wichita Falls for a couple of months TDY in the USAF circa 1998 or so. I’m “paid for” where I am at. I’m too old to change. I can afford to go places when I need to escape.Did you move, or do plan to move when you retire? And why or why not?
I had a friend in Texas get bit by a brown recluse. Ended up with a hole the size of a golf ball in his gluteus maximus.Wichita Falls used to have the Hotter Than Hell Bike Race too IIRC.
Not a single redeeming factor in that town.
And brown recluse spiders are a thing in Texas. I was bitten by one.
