Quick question about Open Carry laws

Lot of speculation in that article. Doesn't look like the police are making the claim that the law slowed them down.

If someone is simply walking down that street with a holstered weapon, he's probably not a bad guy.

When you see a bad guy with a gun, how do you know when to call the police? Do you just have to wait until they start killing people?

With no open-carry, it's easy. You see someone with a gun, you get the police. But with open carry, there doesn't seem to be anyway to know who is a bad guy until they start shooting.

Call as soon as you feel threatened, give a description of yourself to the dispatcher so they know who you are when the cars roll up. The cops know who you are by your description. The other guy would be the bad guy.

Isn't this rather like nailing a girl to find out if she has AIDS?
No, I would assume you would ask the girl before you nailed her and then decide how truthful you think she is before making your decision.

The other question that should be asked here is how do you think the bad guy feels when he sees 4 other people standing around with guns. Does he go ahead with the crime or does he walk away?

I think it's obvious that one with a holstered weapon is probably much less dangerous than the one with it tucked in their waste or actually pointing at someone

If someone is walking down the street with a baseball bat, how would you know if he's a bad guy or just some guy headed to the park to play some ball?

We could go with liberals who see someone with a gun should call the police to investigate and conservatives could just assume they are law abiding people who have a gun.

This seems a little like profiling but no system is perfect. :)

Hmmm

What if there is no open carry and you see a guy with a gun.... What if he's not a "bad guy" as you put it? What if he's an undercover cop? An FBI agent? Are you really going to waste tax dollars having cops chase other cops and federal agents? Seems like a waste of time and money to me.

Because, just as you did, we can easily think of an acceptable reason for having a baseball bat.

Note that either might have nefarious intentions, but it is reasonable to be less concerned about the baseball bat. Someone openly carrying a cup of coffee might have nefarious intentions, too, but it's reasonable to assess him as an even lower threat.

Many animal species have evolved ways to deal with situations like this. Perhaps we should adopt their tactics. If you see someone with a gun and it bothers you, start yelling "gun, Gun, GUN!" and pointing.

Of course if he's a bad guy, you may be singled out as his first target. So you might want to be taking cover as you yell and point. If you die, at least you may have saved others.

Whereas if he's a good guy who somehow thinks carrying a gun into Starbucks in the 21st century makes sense, maybe he'll be sufficiently embarrassed into smarter thinking in the future, and leave the gun at home.

Yeah, we should act like dogs when they see a squirrel. That's brilliant.

So, how do I "leave the gun at home" if I'm taking it to the range for some target practice, or headed out to the wildlife management area for some legal hunting, or taking it to the gunsmith to get it repaired?

You can't think of an acceptable reason for having a gun?
Maybe, but I can't think of an acceptable reason for asking an assaholic question like you did after what I said. Or were you just so stupid that you didn't realize I was talking about relative risk assessment when I said things like "it is reasonable to be less concerned about the baseball bat."

I don't understand why the sight of someone carrying a gun in a non-threatening manner is a cause for any concern whatsoever.
