Racist Fans-- kind of sad if true

If this is true, I do find it awfully hard to believe that no one else heard it and am surprised it hasn’t been confirmed. Gomez walked off the mat, behind the bench and behind the score table to the tunnel. With how loud it was in there, somebody would have had to be yelling pretty fricking loud for Gomez to hear it. There would have been all kinds of U of I employees/ushers/fans that should have heard it too. Unless an usher whispered it in his ear on the way out.

Also, can we quit calling Gomez a kid? The dude will be 24 in a month.

Well, some are calling him a liar, so apparently we should feel free to call him what we want…

1 Drunk dumba** in a crowd full of 15k fans, who woulda thunk.
I have trouble hearing what Mrs. Kwood says to me when she is 6 feet away. (slective hearing?)

Then add 15,000 screaming fans who are watching an Athlete do hand puppet motions to mock them and I really, really have a hard time understanding how anyone could hear something said from the stands very clearly.

Exactly. I know with society as it is Tom can’t question the validity of Austins claims and what he said is 100% right. Wether it happened in this instance or not racism can not be tolerated.

I kind of forgot that the Gomez family was viewed as a bunch of drama queens in high school. This isn’t the first time they have grabbed the spotlight in a negative way.
Makes me much more suspicious of their claims.

I don't remember the year, but someone yelled something racist at the black official (an Iowan)didn't like his decision about about a match, I guess, and right away Iowa announced that this is not the Iowa way to act. I wasn't there, but it was easily heard on TV-the Iowa announcement, that is.)
Let’s just say I remember this and his son later wrestled for a different school.

Watch the Tommy vid again. He just knocked it outside of the park.

Locally I've seen incidents similar to this and they were often exploited by those claiming to be victims . Minor things were really blown out of proportion for financial gain.
One went to the SCOTUS. It was totally driven by the victim industry. The person was let off a school team/activity due to some social media antics that involved cursing and complaining about the team and school.
School tried to handle it but they kept pushing it. All for personal gain. And what point do you decide to have a thicker skin and ignore stupid people spouting off?

Really?

Who are we to decide how thick someone’s skin needs to be or their right to share their personal experiences?

At least the coaches get it. I now see why coach can be so confident with his boy’s decision on schools.

Honest to god, that’s one of the most profound things I’ve heard come out of his mouth. I’m really proud of Tommy right now.
I knew he was great after the first 6 months of his job, and leadership like this is just one of the reasons that I like our coach so much. TB may be my favorite coach ever.

I try to refrain from posting in threads like this, but sometimes I'm either bored or just want to reply. First...

Who the heck is Gasser?? My guess is that he's someone on the PSU board, which very few of us have ever viewed, so why would you mention him? We have zero context regarding him.

Seoncd...

This actually made me shake my head, and laugh! "bring down democracy" / "victim blaming" / "prosecuted" / "even setting foot on campus" / "learns and grows and apologizes and changes" / "allow reconciliation" --- wow, just wow!!

Finally, my own two cents...I'm guessing that it's 50/50 what was said, either "your'e a spic" was yelled, or "you're a dick" was yelled, and with 14,000 screaming fans, Gomez mis-heard. Many of us would swear that the lyrics to a song that we've heard 1000 times is such and such, but in fact is totally different.
You are so very wrong. At least there are people in the Hawkeye community, actually who are affiliated with university, alumni, responsible people, who come out and have the spine to admit the truth and apologize.

I respect Tom brands. Apologist for racist behavior from a fan are themselves complicit.

That you, Tom Ryan? Or Joe Pa?

some people should listen to Tom because he’s a great leader.

So I wonder why this hasn't been posted on "certain" social media sites? This right here puts a smile on my face, and a bigger one on my heart. There are idiots everywhere, at every school, at every event. I hate the it's there, but it is. Deal with it, and move on.

Iowa and Iowa wrestling is the most hated program in the country...by a mile.

Years of domination and a rabid fan base are the reason.

Personally, I like it. It means people notice.

You apparently failed in your reading comprehension of my post. I very clearly stated that my two cents (i.e. casual opinion or thought) is that there is a 50% likliehood that the word "spic" was yelled, and a 50% likelihood that "dick" was yelled (two words that would be very easy to confuse in the din of 14,000 screaming fans, and Gomez simply mis-heard, ). I'm sure you've mis-heard a word. AGAIN, my personal thought is that there is a decent chance that an racial insult was yelled...as well as something more inane. Absent any definitive video/audio, we can only speculate. Do you now understand?

In the socially soft environment in the world today, the university and Brands had essentially no choice but to make those statements. If something racial was yelled by the fan, then the statements SHOULD be issued. If something racial was not yelled, then the statements HAD to be issued, because not doing so would have created major backlash and looked bad on Iowa. Even without proof that a racial word was yelled, the statement/apology still had to be made (guilty until proven innocent!).

I believe you're recollection may be off.

If it's the incident I am aware of, the person was a white female who's social media rant occurred after not being selected for the varsity cheerleading squad. The rant was recorded outside of school property. The SCOTUS issue related to whether school control of her freedom of speech outside of school property and resultant disciplinary actions infringed on her rights.

I have no idea how this incident is relevant.

Watch the Tommy vid again. He just knocked it outside of the park.

He spoke the way a coach at a liberal university needs to speak.

It was smart. It doesn't have to be totally accurate. It just needs to appease people.

And if your response is any indication, it has apparently succeeded.

Tommy was forced to say the right things?

Not a good look, but feel free to keep digging. It’s your shovel,

Yeah, my guess is that it's like how so many clearly heard George Zimmerman utter a racial epithet on that phone recording a few years back with the Treyvon Martin killing.

Wasn't close, but people hear what they want to hear sometimes.

Maybe the Tweeter should've @'ed those social media sites to better spread the word.

Nothing is stopping others from reTweeting it and adding @s.

The Hawkeye crowd is innocent until proven guilty. Gomez could have misheard.

Yes, Tommy is basically "forced" to say the right things, just like Kirk Ferentz does.

Huh? He didn’t say Gomez was lying. Nothing even close to that. He clearly stated that either he was called a racial slur or he was called a dick and just misheard it.

This statement is ridiculous on so many levels.

Nothing is likely to force Brands to do anything.

If he's saying "the right things" then there'd be no reason to be forced.

You seem to be saying Tom Brands is insincere. I wholly disagree.
