Perkins - "B" kept Hawks in the game but disappeared at times
Sandfort - "C-" he couldn't hit shit, turned the ball over and his defense is deplorable. Would have been a "D" had he not gotten 7 rebounds.
Freeman - "B" played hard and was a difgerence maker but he needs to quit reaching in and slapping at the ball.
Krikke - "C-" Missed several layups and got blocked multiple times at critica points in the game. Needs to pound tge boards.
Dix - "B" played good defense on young for most of the game, shooting was off and dribbled too much
Pmac - "C" Played the right amount of minutes (10), 4 points and a couple TO.
Bowen - "C" should play more, they need his athletc ability. Couple nice assists but seldome shoots
Harding - "C" played with great energy on both ends of the court. If he could only make an outside shot.

I kerp reading what a great shooting team this is. I don't see it. Missed a lot of wide open threes.

FWIW, this team has very little fire and Freeman looked totally disinterested last night at the press conference.

Wasted two hours watching that. Totally disappointed, because we should have won that game.

My rating for the season compared to what I thought preseason -

Amazed - Freeman

Pleasantly surprised - Dix, Krikke

About as I expected - Perkins, Harding, Dembele

Very Disappointed - Sandfort, PMac, Bowen

The team is pretty soft on defense and the boards - we knew that was going to be the case. Last night the Hawks actually outrebounded MD and the defense was good enough to win - except at the end of the game of course.

But, we knew this team was going to have to shoot well to win - and it's happening. 3/14 from 3 is not going to get it done when it's supposed to be a strength.

Maryland had a few guys, even their true freshman, that looked like they could play football just as easily as basketball. It sure would be nice to have a couple on the Hawks.

These are season long grade for me:
A. --Freeman and not at his ceiling: better and more advanced that I expected. above average athlete that plays both ends of the court
B. --Perkins is at his ceiling: not a big fan of his but I think he plays both ends of the court as well as anyone but Freeman. His offensive game is very limited. He can do one thing well: drive to the lane, power hop off two feet and shoot.
C+. --Josh Dix not at his ceiling: Trending up though. Has A potential and is just starting to realize it.
C --Sandfort at his ceiling: shooting is streaky, partially because he has every teams attention and often has to shoot in a hurry. Defensively, he at least hustles and attempts to rebound.,
C. --Harding not at his ceiling: is not being used well. Yes his shooting is inconsistent but his 3 pt % is still 33%, for this team that's ok. It's hard to shoot when you don't know what will or will not affect your playing time. Fran should give him the keys right now and live with a few mistakes. He gets stuck shooting some wild shots, some of that is him, some of that is getting stuck with the ball in your hands at the end of a shot clock. He makes plays for others, something that has been missing in Fran's tenure. His defense is ok, he's a bit undersized but for what's considered acceptable defensively by this coaching staff, he's above average.
C. ---Bowen not at his ceiling: has played ok this season but he's in the same boat as harding. Don't know what will/won't get you pulled. Shooting from deep is rough but again, couple that with playing time and it's easy to understand why you would lack confidence. PMAC would be allowed to keep shooting.

C --Krikke past his ceiling: he has a midrange game and can make open shots. He is an offensive player only and struggles with anyone tall. You can't earn a grade higher than a C in my book if you only play on one end of the court and he's just bad a defense for a D1 guy.

C. --Dembele nowhere near his ceiling: physical/athletic, a rarity for fran. Plays very good defense for a freshman and frankly I was surprised by his jump shot. Again, his shooting will come around with PT.
D. -- Pryce Sandfort, not at his ceiling: nor should we really know. He gets about the right playing time. If, like the rest of frans players, they don't develop in the weight room they will not reach their potential.

D- --PMAC: not sure I've ever seen a more one way player at Iowa. He is a defensive F--. The speed at which he plays the game is that of a truck with a broken third gear, never gets out of second. Offensively he is limited, not a shooter in any sense of the word, and his driving consists of penetrating from the wing to the opposite wing through the lane often jumping out of control with nowhere to go. He is good at the top of the press. If Fran told him you get to play 2 minutes at a time but you must go balls out, you would have something. That's about the length of time he can sustain effort before needing a break.

This page is pretty useful for comparing different players for this season. Krikke has been in the lead most of the year for their "PRPG!" rating system, but Perkins is closing the gap quickly, Sandfort is still near the top, but Freeman is right there with him. PMac is way down there at #7 for the most efficient players on the team.

Other notable items:

The only good defensive players in the team (in terms of DBPM) are Freeman (+3.2) and Perkins (+2.2), Dix isn't far behind at +1.7. PMac is pretty far down at -0.1, while Krikke is barely ahead at +0.1.

Payton has a much higher D Reb rate than Krikke, despite being 2 inches shorter.

Perkins has double the block rate of Krikke, Dix and Pryce Sandfort are also ahead of him.

Harding leads the team in Assist rate, as well as Steal rate, while Freeman leads the team in O Reb rate, Block rate, and overall BPM. Those two freshman should be the core of the team going forward. Hopefully we can build something around them. Dix and Bowen have potential, but Krikke, PMac and Payton aren't leading this team.

I don't think grading on a game is important. It is the season body of work.

Freeman's mistakes are errors of trying to do too much and picking up cheap fouls. He's Freshman of year in B1G. I'd give him an A on season....and I wonder why there isn't some intensive film study/coaching to teach him not to try to reach so much and pick up cheap fouls. Also he needs some double team help in post more often to keep him out of foul trouble.

Dix is an Iowa kid that is one of the few guys on the team that tries to defend---given his coach doesn't value defense much, it takes a guy with pride like Dix to keep playing defense. He's not a 4 star, but he'd start or play big minutes on most of the B1G teams. I'd give him A for effort, B for output because he doesn't score a lot. He should shoot more.

Perkins is only athetic guard on team that can get too hoop and is scorer. I would give him B+ because his handles are weak and mediocre 3pt shooter.

Krikke is awful at defense and doesn't rebound. He's a net postive when he's making shots. THe last two games vs Purdue and Maryland he's been huge negative and yet played the most minutes. Krikke is a "C" because Fran plays him too often with other poor defenders and the end result is a disaster---like giving an uncontested game winning layup to Maryland.

Sandfort is only volume 3pt shooter with good shooting form we have. He rebounds well. His defense is really bad and he's been trying to be a point forward and throwing away a lot of balls with bad passes. I'd have to give him a C.

PMAC is nice young man, but can't play defense or rebound as well as he should for his height. He can't switch and on defense and help Freeman guard in the post or guard a PF. He's a 10 minute per game type talent. He's a C if he played 10 minutes per game. Since FRan can't help himself but play him 25 min/game, that makes PMAC a D in impact.

Harding/Bowen---two guys that can't shoot the ball very well. They wouldn't play more than a few minutes per game on good teams. Harding is only Freshman, so maybe he develops...but woof on his shooting form. Both these guys are C minus pgs in B1G.

It looks like this Iowa team will have difficult time getting to 0.500.....0.500 is average, so seems like a C-grade for the team sum of parts.

Harding can run an offense well and is great passer, but the fact that he doesn't shoot the ball well limits him. The lineup with Dix and Perkins as starters is better than with one of them sitting to bring in Harding as starter. This team doesn't have much guard talent. You can't go 3 guards because we only have two guards Dix and Perkins that are above avearage B1G players. If you think Harding has a lot of upside to improve this season, then maybe you can start him....but who do you have left on the 2nd team when Fran pretty much goes to all bench guys when he subs.

McCaffery's platoon system is a major problem IMO. He is too lazy or obstinate to actually alter his substitution plans to fit the game. He is a terrible game coach, also IMO.

Not much mention about Braun because he is slow and fouls a lot. Not sure why Fran wasted a schollie on him. You can't tell me Fran could not find help for this team in the portal. Krikke was a decent pick up offensively but a so-so rebounder and poor defender. I have heard Fran say he does not like pay for play but prefers players onthe team get NIL. His stubborness about NIL is a big issue. It only takes one or two players to make a huge difference. Look at the difference AJ Storr meant to Wisconsin's fortunes.
