The Refs in the Big Ten suck the big one! Grabbing guys running off of screens, no call! Garza getting absolutely pummeled inside, no ****ing call!! Calling pansy ass touch fouls when a guy drives the lane but absolutely nut grabbing him when he takes the ball down the court to get the offense set, no call. Letting players take full elephant dick step before putting the ball on the floor. When a player goes in for a layup, defense goes to reach, retracts his reach and they still call a shit ass foul!! One call in particular, Murray when he fouled out in the game against Ohio State. Nowhere near anyone and they blow his fifth on that bullshit while they where fouling the shit out of each other on rebounds all night. What in the hell are they looking at!!

Do you know why the Big Ten is so tough from top to bottom every year? Because the refs make it that way. They want the top tear teams vulnerable to be beat on any given night to make the Big Ten more exciting. That is why they allow grabbing and rough play, the bad or even mediocre teams that can't hang playing basketball the right way, have a chance. It's rugby on a basketball floor. It's complete bullshit!

Have a nice day!

I think the refs suck in all major sports. The Big 10 refs, however, take the f***ing cake! Every game I watch has me pulling my hair out wondering what was that ref looking at! I think this next game with MSU is going to be real ugly. Izzo will have his goons all over Garza from start to finish and we won’t be able to breathe on them without a foul being called.

They are bad and call the game much different than other conferences. To the detriment of BIG teams in the NCAA tourney. Boroski really shafted NW last night IMO.
Yup.

It was funny reading Indiana fans' posts throughout the game. In the 1st half a few were crying about the officiating.

Then when the shoe was on the other foot at the end of the game and Purdue fans were letting them have it, not a f***ing word except after the game to gloat about coming back from 14 down and how great a win it was (to beat Northwestern).

Yeah they were horrible in the super bowl but always have been for Brady.

Mathis was literally hugging Weezy most of the 2nd half. However, he was called for much of it, too. Not all of it, though.
I did like the one call later in the game where the official had to go talk to both Weiskamp and Mathis before an inbounds play, and then not 3 seconds into running the play, Mathis gets whistled for grabbing Joe, who had him beat on a curl cut, and Mathis is jumping around like he couldn't believe he got caught. Like LOL what did he think would happen after they JUST got done talking to you.....

I hadn't been able to watch the game on TV until then, but as soon as I saw that I knew Joe was in that guy's head.

Well, whether or not they were fair to both teams is highly debatable, but after watching the AFC championship game, I completely understood where all the flags were coming from. The Chiefs secondary is grabby as f*** and plays physical to try and get WRs off their game.

A couple other penalties that extended drives were just dumb offsides penalties. Even if some calls were questionable, it was evident that Kansas City was not the more disciplined team that night.

As a large (both in girth and fandom) baseball fan, I have to say umpiring is pretty decent. Yeah there are some absolute shitshows but for the most part they’re pretty solid.

But B1G refs do suck walnuts.

It’s pretty hard to be a bad ump. Joe West and Angel Hernandez are just very good at it.

Out of curiosity when the Big 10 refs officiate in other leagues, are they equally terrible?

(caveat that this season refs are far more regionalized than usual and some focusing far more in 1 conference than previously)

But somebody like Boroski last season officiated Big Ten, MAC, MVC, P12, MWC, MAAC, BE, Horizon, etc league games. Was he good in those other conferences and bad in the Big Ten?

Basketball is not football. In football, the refs are employed by the individual conferences and only work in 1 conference. In basketball they are independent contractors and do games all over the place. TV Teddy Valentine in the last 2 weeks has done ACC, SEC, Big South, AAC, and CAA conference games. John Higgins has done Big Ten, MWC, P12, WAC, B12, and Big East in the last 2 weeks.

Baseball has to be the easiest sport to be an official in. So much break time in between active play, so your brain doesn’t turn into mush. Base umps only have a handful of things to look for. And the home plate ump gets some leeway with the strike zone as long as he is consistent for both teams throughout the game. The umps that suck are the ones that make the game about them instead of about the players. Except Enrico Pallazo, he‘s just a bad ref in general.

Football reffing is harder because so much is a judgement call and it is hard to see what is going on cause of all of the players. But there’s a reason they have so many refs on the field to help with that. Football reffing is usually good and instant replay has changed the way that refs call the game. Now they often let the play finish knowing that replay should fix a mistake to avoid an inadvertent whistle. And I thought the Super Bowl was reffed pretty well in the first half that I actually watched. KC was guilty of every penalty that was thrown, and that’s coming from an old defensive player that hates how babies offenses are today.

Hockey reffing has got to be tough because of the workout required to go up and down the ice non-stop while trying to not get killed by a 100mph slap shot. They usually do a pretty dang good job and have replay to help them out with goal calls when they can’t see the puck.

Basketball refs, especially in college, generally suck. NBA refs are usually decent but miss calls with some frequency and have a recent known case of corruption. High school refs can suck, but the players often times don’t move too fast for them. College refs are in the worst position, especially in the big conferences. The players are too big, too fast, and too skilled for them to keep up with everything. And so they often times make anticipation calls that just generally suck. Case in point about not being able to keep up, the Illinois game where Kofi blocked Joe’s shot and they called a goaltend that was wrong and overturned. That call may have cost us the game considering it took away Joe‘s rebound putback That was legal aside from the bad whistle.

I think college B-ball needs a few changes. #1 more refs, the guys they have are overworked and have to be tired from all of the travel which likely leads to missed calls. #2 professional refs for the big conferences, there’s enough money involved to support this and it can’t help when these guys work a full time job before hopping on a plane to do a game that night. #3 a fourth ref on the court and the edict that you don’t blow the whistle unless the violation occurs in your area of the court and you actually saw it with your eyes. No more anticipation calls before a violation actually occurs, no more guessing calls where a violation “must have happened”, and no more calls from the ref 30 feet away from the play when the ref 5 feet away didn’t call it. That won’t solve everything, but it would help improve the situation.

Officials have way too big an impact on who wins and loses in B1G basketball. I can't speak to other conferences. The first game in Iowa's skid, against Illannoy, I thought both teams played at a high level and well enough to deserve to win. Still, had the officiating been "totally fair", like a few fouls calls on Illannoy in the last 10 min, when they were playing very physical defense, would the outcome have been the same? Probably not. Even worse officiating goes on in the B1G in many of the games, and some coaches seem to be better at getting calls to go their way. This is nothing new, but it sure can be frustrating, when your team just got jobbed.

I agree. MLB umpires take their profession seriously and self regulate and do a very good job IMO.

And think about when Jim Joyce blew that call at first base to take away a perfect game. It hurt him deeply that his mistake had that impact. Even the dicks like Joe West and Angel Hernandez take pride in their craft.

So why does this continue year after year? The guys that supervise the officials can see the same thing we, and most of the fans around the country, can see. People have been talking about the bad and "inconsistent" officiating for at least 40 years.

I don't know what happened but the officiating got a lot better for about the first ten years of this century. Now it is quickly returning to the obviously incompetent and corrupt days of old, when vermin like Phil Bova and Jim Bain were perpetrating their result oriented officiating in the 70s-90s.

So is this 40 year pattern a coincidence? Coincidences do not replicate annually over 40 years do they? In what other professional endeavor could people get by with appears to be the officiating in the Big Ten? So unless we're all nuts and just not getting it, and by us "all" I mean all of the people in the media that have talked about bizarre officiating in the Big Ten how do these problems never seem to get fixed.

It does not just affect Iowa. Or you could believe all is well, only paranoids would suspect some kind of profit centered scheme and the officials know how to deliver their end of the deal without anyone really having to discuss it. You can also believe in the Easter Bunny and unicorns.

Very intelligent commentary and some excellent and practical suggestions, especially the part I bold faced above.

Big Ten refs have been horseshit for years. Nothing new here. Move on.

As I posted in another thread: I was watching a 1980's game between Iowa and the Illini that Vitale was doing and he was lamenting about how bad the B1G officials were then and how the conference deserved better. Some things never change. You would think that given the relative lack of success the B1G has achieved in the NCAA Tournament that the commissioner would be pushing for a change in the way the conference games are officiated as it's a whole different animal when playing with officials that make teams play by the rules.

Still the master of profanity ... :) Google Lee Elia rant if you haven't heard it.

totally agree with you but I think the current Big Ten commissioner has proven he is a dictating moron by ruining/hampering all the kids athletic lives/futures by thinking he is somehow smarter than every other conference commissioner in the country, so don't expect anything out of him.

After watching Big Ten basketball for the last 60 plus years I am convinced that the last 20 years at least they have allowed grabbing, bumping and mugging. Just a coincidence that Tom Izzo has coached in all those years. His philosophy is that the refs wont call them all.
If you reflect back in the early preseason Non Conference games and in the NCAA and NIT tournaments when refs from other areas are involved they don't for the most part allow the grabbing, bumping and mugging.

Turned on the 2nd half of the NW at Illinois. NW coming back and making it a game. NO Chance for NW though, refs are screwing them over. Two obvious block fouls on Illinois are called as ENTHUSIASTIC charges against NW.

Illinois playing aggressive D.... Only 1 foul to 6 fouls against NW.

Seems familiar to the IA @ Illinois game.
