Regression of Bohannon's Sweet Shot

The season is now 1/3 over, a large enough sample to see things as they are. Garza is a stud, Weezy can be all-Big 10, and self proclaimed "star" Bohannan is a shell of his former self. He currently ranks:

-DEAD LAST (14th) on the team in field goal percentage, shooting just 30% from the field (lowest of the 70 Big 10 starters)
-11th on the team in free throw percentage (despite being the school's record holder)
-8th on the team in 3 point %, at just 28% (despite being on of the top 3 point shooters in Big 10 history)

The guy walked through the off season like he was God's gift to basketball, focusing on his social media persona and complaining about not getting paid while the rest of the league hit the gym. His effort on the court has been lacking all season, yet his confidence is so high that he continues to repeatedly shoot NBA range 3 pointers 8 feet behind the 3 point line, only to clang it off the rim 3 out of 4 times.

Fran's given the guy the benefit of the doubt based on past accomplishments from back when Peter Jok & Tyler Cook were in the lineup with him. Four years later, it's simply not working. 2020 Bohannan is, at best, a role player off the bench. There is no sense starting him out of loyalty when he can no longer shoot any better than a 7 footer or play defense any better than the ladies team.

I mean he is clearly a leader on the team, but it appears that his lower body will not allow him to shoot like he used to. Unfortunately, shooting was always the strength of his game. He doesn't really have the size or quickness or defensive ability in general to be an effective player when he is not shooting well.

The Free Throw % thing here is a GIGANTIC leap toward what you're trying to prove. He's shot TWO free throws in 9 games. TWO, and made one. We all know he can't get to the line, but he can when teams are intentionally fouling late, and he and Fran both screwed that up too.

He is playing like dogshit, there is no way around it. I'm a big fan of the kid and can't believe he has sucked this bad (has seven 3's against Carolina and has been invisible otherwise - Isiah Moss on steroids).

And when we need him to go to the line against Minny the one time he touches it he gives it up to Toussaint, terrible decision, something I don't recall him ever doing in that situation. His only current strength is to go to the line late in games and he screwed that up, and Fran helped by not having him out there enough late. Big Time Choke job by a supposedly experienced team, the type of game taylor made for experienced Teams to win.

Harsh but probably fair.

This.

He can't stay in front of anyone.

If he's not making shots, he's almost a pure liability out there.

Cmon now. While I’m in agreement he should be out there in certain situations, the personal attacks from guys like Iowa law are ridiculous. Just because the guys on social media doesn’t give you the right to hammer him that way. And you have no idea how hard he worked in the off-season. Just to get back on the court I’m guessing was no easy feat. You want to complain about his play? Fair game.

Jobo currently shooting 27% from 3....

how many of you think that is representative of what he’ll be shooting moving forward?

if not, what do you think he will shoot moving forward?

yea wasn’t calling you out just couldn’t imagine hip replacement at his age and you may be right.... but he shot pretty well this year in other games.... we just didn’t shoot well as a team today
He hasn't shot well in ANY games really. You can point to the UNC game, BUT as I posted earlier 7 for 16 , or about 40% is good for a stretch of games, but when you are supposed to be an elite or very good deep shooter thats not "a good game", at least not in a context of being hot. Joe W and CJ were HOT in that game at I think 5 makes in 7 attempts. Hot is what we just saw from Johnson of Minnesota, I think 8 for 9. In most games if we have ONE player taking 16 attempts from three we have a problem......

It feels like it's worse than 27%, and as good as he's been in his career, you would think it would be steady or up (from career %). I can only assume the injuries have taken their toll on his shot.

This Minnesota game was a gift from Heaven for Iowa with a player like Jordan Bohannon on the roster and he never got to the line once. He should be instructed to never give the ball up, and they for damn sure should do everything in their power to get it to him.

It's not like he's never faced traps in late game situations when teams are fouling, keep dribbling and you'll get the intended result (and he's good with the ball). He's always been slow, and it didn't matter then and it shouldn't matter now.

And for those who would argue his Defense is a liability, it got torched anyway and typically does, so it's far better to have him out there shooting free throws. I'd bet everything I own that says Iowa wins this game if they follow the script that's won them many games in the past, with Jordan Bohannon shooting free throws.

He's as much of a sure thing as we've ever had, and he never shot a free throw. Mr. Fran McCaffery is responsible for making sure he does, and this was a monumental failure on his part that it didn't happen. The end.

I have no idea.

Depends on if he's missing shots because of his physical condition or just in a slump.

Most of the shots hes getting aren't great looks either which is kind of crazy because we have a guy getting triple teamed regularly and really aren't getting any good shots out of it.

JBo has earned a lot of slack. Not shooting well right now, he could bust out at any moment.
Needs to Keep on shooting. If the hips are limiting him, sad to see.

I could t agree more. It’s not JoeT’s fault that JoBo doesn’t have the ball in his hands at end of game, a career 88.4% on 275 FTA, he’s not missing 2 in row... i agree, it is on Fran...

Wow - this thread is something else.

Prediction - Nudge, JBO, PMAC from the 3rd week of January will all average 10 pts or higher.

PMAC JBO - Out 1 year of playing time
Nudge - Out 2 years of playing time
(Another thing about the thread of Jack N. versus Ryan K. - Jack is holding his own)

Jack N. I understand,.. Who the phuck is Nudge?

If you watch his shot, though, he is right on it. His shot looks very good coming off his hand, has great rotation, and is on line. He isn't missing by much at all. I think it will come around. He just need to keep shooting.
I think his shot is short due to lack of strength in his lower body . I am guessing when you have two hip surgerys in a year, it takes a while for the strength to come back. The problem is, there may not be enough time to get the strength back.

lets see how many of those folks come back and say that JoeT should be starting...?
Jordan played his best game of the season tonight and, in addition to his shooting, he displayed better effort both on the boards and defensively than I’ve seen from him in any other game. When this Bohannon shows up, it doesn’t matter who starts, but he needs to bring it with consistency - even if the shots aren’t falling

saw a tweet that JBo almost got hit by a bus. The adrenalin rush must have got him ready for NW.

We need Fredrick to hunt shots and Jbo to be Jbo. Fran has some knobs to make this a really good team.

This has been my problem with him. Tonight was more of a complete effort. I’m happy with 35-40% from three Jordan. But if he’s in the 20’s with his normal defense he is a liability. That’s just a fact.
on that note can someone show our team how to handle a pick and roll. I think we hedged well one time and it went well. The rest of the time was not good.

Looks like JT is dealing with a leg injury. He did a lot of dribbling around but not penetration to the basket tonight

Agree, I think this is an example of JoBo regression to his career mean...

As long as Luka is involved in playing pick and roll defense Bulldogs 74 the answer is no. I have no idea why he’s out 23 feet and then his guy just continually rolls to the bucket for an easy lay up. He got put in a blender on the defensive end last night.

I agree, JoBo should be the 1st option ahead , late and close. Huge mistake by Coaching staff

Jobo is again the late and close option, swishing go ahead jumper with less than a minute .

prolly win the MN game if wekeep the ball in his hands

well, Jobo has hit 9 of 14 3FGA and averaged 37 points in last 2 games over ranked team....
land 3 FG% is now at 35%

Anyone bet he’ll end up closer to 40% than 27%?
