Remember Scott Mullen?

Best QB to literally never win a start at Iowa.
Isn’t he to the only qb to start for Ferentz not to win a game.. reiners beat northern Illinois.. buetjer beat mich state. McCann, banks, chandler, Tate, Manson beat Syracuse, christian, stanzi, vanderberg, Ruddock, beathard, Stanley.. those are all the qbs to start under Ferentz

I do remember Scott. I think he came to Iowa from somewhere near Chicago? I think he sustained some kind of arm injury? Randy Reiners replaced him and Scott never regained the starting position?

Aged him? Yes

But time flies! Remember that each of those QB’s are probably now in their 40’s.

I may not be remembering things perfectly, but weren't there games where all three of those QBs had series? If not individual games, it sure seems like all three played in the same year as Iowa was never certain who (if any of them) was good.

Unfortunately, I remember SM for a few lousy reasons - being a highly regarded Chicago-area QB who never reached his potential, and for his first start against Wisky in '97, which was our first loss to them in like 20 years and one of the first signs that the program was headed for the doldrums.

I was going to post the same thing about the 1997 Wisconsin game. I went with 2 of my buddies and we were 2 rows behind the Iowa bench. When we saw Mullen was starting it was one of the biggest WTF moments of my Hawkeye fandom . He was a Freshman at the time .

If I could sit down with KF and ask him to explain just one thing it would be how Scott Mullen ever saw the field. I know McCann was fragile and Buetjer was a world class dick but Mullen lacked any quality that a starting QB should possess. What could they possibly have seen in practice that had Mullen ahead of Buetjer (is that the right spelling, too lazy to check).

There definitely weren’t games where all three played. Kyle McCann started KF’s first game in 1999 against Nebraska because Reiners got picked up for public intox. Then Reiners started for a stretch after that. Mullen might’ve started some games in 1999 too. In 2000 though, Mullen started the first 4 games, then Beutjer started 4 games, then McCann started the final 4 games and was the incumbent going into 2001 when Beutjer transferred after Sam Aiello assaulted him. Brad Banks moved up to #2 on the depth chart and Iowa football was back to going to bowl games and our QBs were at least serviceable if not damn good.

Fun fact: McCann started against Michigan in 1998. Of course Michigan’s QB was Tom Brady.

One of the most egregious officials lynching Iowa. Only time I've seen two officials get into it after a call.

How big of an asshole must it take to get a beatdown from a lineman and nothing happens to the lineman? I'm thinking they knew Beutjer was leaving before Big Sam kicked his ass or were completely indifferent.

Did the cable bill incident with Beutjer and Aiello happen before or after the release of the QB depth chart?

I think it's because Kirk saw the O line play on film from the 1998 season and the live action in practice in 1999. O line was so bad at pass protection he needed to go with 1) a mobile player or 2) a warrior who wouldn't flinch and could take hits in the pocket.

Ferentz went the mobile player route for a while with Reiners, but Reiners was sort of a brat with a sour attitude (remember his comments after the Northwestern game). So he went with the warrior instead, Mullen, who unlike McCann, could take the hits in the pocket. Mullen took a lot of hard hits in 1999, but the dude kept getting back up. I give him a lot of credit for getting us through that season.

Unfortunately Mullen's arm never really recovered after a series of injuries and he could only consistently make short throws. Iowa only had one legit receiver in 1999 (Kasper) since Kahlil Hill was suspended that year, so Defenses only really had to guard a quarter of the field.

I still want to know the full story about what happened with Hill back in 1999. Half of people said he talked to an agent, the other half said he was caught taking 'roids.

Hill was on Colin Cole’s podcast and said his dad gave him supplements that contained banned substances. (Linked below)

Curious about Reiners’ comments after the northwestern game. I don’t remember them.

"Home field advantage is good," Reiners said. "You don't have to travel four hours the night before on a bus, cramped in like high school kids. As much as you don't want to say it, it plays a big role."

My sources at the time told me Ferentz was not happy with the comment.

That’s pretty innocuous. I can’t imagine anyone in sports would disagree with that statement. Whatever I guess.

Wasn't in good standing after that? Before we knew good standing existed.
