Reynolds wants to reduce unemployment benefits....

But I’ve heard on here plenty of times that there are plenty of jobs out there and if you don’t like the one you’re at, find a new one. Hell this should make it easier as you don’t even need to quit your job and you’ll get paid for 16 weeks to find a new job.
I got laid off from my job during covid and found a new job in less time than that. That’s when companies were downsizing.

Now if you want to complain that companies are getting off with saving money, ok that’s fine but shouldn’t we want people working and not staying home collecting money?

Proposing to have a law reducing what businesses must contribute and what those that are unemployed can receive.

So damn on point to just how damn evil that nasty bitch actually is.

Mississippi North is just cursed.

A safety net for workers is wasteful in the Iowa GOP world while they curry favor with big business for a cash payoff for their " war chest".

Meanwhile they support taxpayers federal funds being directed to landowners and even lifted the cap of 125k per owner and raised it to as much as 350k per owner.

Seems wrong- headed to me.
I get that they want to make Iowa an attractive state for business but create a hostile environment for workers which means Iowa does not have a workforce to attract those auto and battery manufacturing plants that seem to all go to SEC country.

Catch-22.

I’m sure the 300 people of Jeld-Wen, all seeking new jobs in Grinnell, will have some comfort in knowing that you were able to do it.

As I remember a worker that just quits will not qualify for unemployment comp, right?
Company will dispute that claim.

I wonder how many workers actually see unemployment compensation as some kind of long-term career option?

Iowa is losing population and the workforce is shrinking(especially without immigrants).
Is this an effort to squeeze more productivity out of a shrinking workforce that could contract even more with the immigrant purge that is looming?
I would guess the big meat industry are concerned about the purge and are wielding their huge influence on Kim and Iowa GOP to keep their plants staffed.
Cash Kim will play...cuz they pay her well.

You found a job when others couldn’t, so unemployment isn’t necessary.

So damn oblivious and selfish.

Excellent. 16 weeks long enough. And I bet you if look deeper into the data, a large percentage of the max weekers are repeat offenders.

Correct. They will not or at least should not receive unemployment.

I wouldn’t see how it’s possible to keep it long term. But some people figure out how to cheat the system.

If Iowa is losing population and immigrants are being kicked out/leaving, there should be more than enough jobs available for people to find a job in 16 weeks.
I’m guessing they don’t want to work in the meat packing plant though because they are too good for that job in their mind.
Might be good for some people to work there for a bit and allow them to realize that these positions should be paid more.

How do you know others didn’t find a new job or really tried to find a new job.

So damn obvious and my way is always right!

If companies are downsizing, then people are out of work. You can pretend it’s their own fault, you can tell yourself anyone who wants to work will find a job in a timely manner - but you’re just giving yourself an excuse to not be concerned about others. Because you are selfish and lack empathy.

Everything in this post would result in a slower economy. How is a slower economy good for Iowa?

Seasonal construction and factory workers. Libs.
Might be time to budget a little better and get paid more during their working season.
Like people that work at schools that don’t get paid during the summer months and don’t collect unemployment during those months.
Plus how many construction jobs really have more than 3 months off in Iowa anymore?
It’s January and was 50 degrees out the other day.

Well I believe I was told multiple times on this board that Iowa is a right to work state. Why should they even pay 16 weeks if that’s the case.
If lots of companies are known for laying people off (john Deere, kinze, and so many others) maybe people should be smart enough not to take a job there in their mind first place. But they take the job because it pays more right away and then cry when they get laid off knowing it happens frequently.

I’d also love for you to explain how I’m being selfish beings you keep saying it.
I’m not profiting one way or the other. Companies aren’t paying me to promote shorter unemployment. You’re arguing that one group of people should get money and I’m arguing a different group of people should get money. You’re just as selfish as I am I guess.

Sure seems like this policy would cause brand new construction companies to decide to move to a friendlier state. What business owner would want to deal with the headache of not being able to find employees?

And if we don't have new construction, opportunities to entice new people here start to dry up

I don’t think benefits should be reduced, but I do think they should be reformed.

There are studies that show most people on unemployment either find a job in the first month or they wait the entire time they have benefits.

I’d like to see a lot more income replacement in the first month then have it reduced the longer they are on benefits. 16 weeks is plenty and I don’t think seasonal workers should be on unemployment.

You just admitted lots of companies do this. And it's not like most places in Iowa are known for having lots of decent employment options. You really are rooting for a shittier Iowa economy, aren't you?

Yeah and people take those jobs because they get paid handsomely when they are employed and know there is a good chance they will get laid off. What makes them so much better that they should get to work half a year and make the same as someone working a whole year?

You make more rhan $600 a week?

“What about me?” - the new GOP slogan

I don’t claim to know all the details of this but I work for a city and get job applications every year. I’ve tried to hire people only for them to say “I don’t want a job I’m just trying to get my 5 apps in to collect unemployment “. Lazy people!!

Exactly, they didn’t give two shits or even know. But I’m supposed to coddle and care for them because they lost their job?
But then again I’m being selfish because I dealt with it without them knowing and I should be there for them while they go through it.

You keep making my point. Because you lack empathy, you convince yourself it's okay to not care about people who have been laid-off by attributing laziness, stupidity, etc. to them and their work/life decisions.

And how can you possibly still need me to explain to you how you are selfish? I explain it every single time. You don't care about anyone else, so long as you are doing okay. When someone else has problems, you immediately claim - with no knowledge of them or their circumstances - that is their own damn fault and you don't want to help them via government benefits.

You. Only. Care. About. Yourself.

Take a drive around the university of Iowa campus, especially around the hospital and tell me how slow the construction work is right now this time of the year.
Doesn’t look like many workers are being driven away. Doesn’t look like the university is having problems finding construction companies either.

What? Your argument sounds like socialism. If you want more money, go talk to your company. Maybe your skills don't warrant it. Stop being jealous of others.

Do you know all of my circumstances that you continue to call me selfish? Perhaps your being selfish thinking you know what’s right for me.
Where exactly do you see me claiming that they shouldn’t get any money at all via government benefits? The only post I mentioned something remotely close was calling out you morons for telling me iowa is a right to work state in the past.
You don’t care about the people, you only care about your opinion and whether people agree with you or not.
Guess what, I’m being “selfish” again because I don't care for your opinion.

Sorry but why are those who are unemployed entitled to any specific amount? And I mean specific in that not getting THAT amount really pisses you off

We know the motivation of her proposal...she knows the ag economy is falling and companies like JD, Kinzee, etc will have more layoffs this year.

Kinzee owners are big GOP donors, so this action isn't surprising.

Kick people when they're down...a Republican hallmark.

We need more homeless people living on the streets, right? I hear there's a fancy new hotel in Cuba we could ship them all off to.

I'm calling you selfish based on your consistently stated opinions that always - always - lack empathy. And you keep inventing justifications for your lack of empathy. Factory workers were stupid and greedy for taking higher paying jobs that they know have a risk of layoffs. I express empathy for others but you can't believe I am a good person and so you decide, out of thing air, that I don't really care about others; I just claim to for the sake of argument.

You criticize others for things you invent in your head about them. I'm criticizing you for your clearly stated views.
