LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The 2017 Hardwood Classic came to a close on Sunday (July 23) as Team Penny won the 17U Division and the Iowa Barnstormers took home titles in the 16 and 15U divisions. Four-star Patrick McCaffery had himself a day in the process and headlines my takeaways.

SOMEBODY SHOULD AT LEAST TAKE A SHOT AT PATRICK MCCAFFERY

Because Patrick McCaffery's father Fran McCaffery is the head coach at Iowa, most assume that the skilled 6-foot-8 forward will play for his father. Honestly, it's probably a pretty good assumption but I can't help but wonder why somebody isn't at least taking a swing at recruiting him?

If it weren't for McCaffery's ties to Iowa -- who had an assistant coach watching him and the Iowa Barnstormers programs on Sunday -- his recruitment would be off-the-charts. He has great size, is a fluid athlete and can make plays off the dribble and at the rim or as a jump shooter. He is on the skinny side, but he doesn't lack at all for toughness.

McCaffery told me that Miami (Ohio) is the only other school to reach out to him. He specifically mentioned Notre Dame -- where is father was an assistant -- as a program he'd like to have recruit him. It's too bad somebody like Bo Ryan isn't around anymore. Maybe a guy like Ryan would have thrown an offer McCaffery's way, even if it was simply to try and troll the eldest McCaffery.

At the end of the day, I think we all have a pretty good idea of how this will unfold. But, if I was a high major program, I'd at least give McCaffery a few phone calls. Why not?

If I had to guess, it would be that other coaches are staying clear out of respect for Fran. There may be an unwritten rule that you don't recruit other coaches's son unless the kid has made it clear he wants to be recruited. By not committing Patrick has suggested he is open to being recruited, but he hasn't run around asking to be recruited either. I'd also imagine this case is about 100x more sensitive than usual given that Patrick's battle with cancer is well known around the country. I'm sure that Fran wants Patrick to play for him and other coaches's respect that and don't even want to tread on that ground.

Given that even offering him a scholarship might be something you don't want to do to Fran and the fact that you probably realize that the kid is probably going to commit to Iowa even if you spend time recruiting Patrick, what is the point of offering a scholarship? I'm guessing that is the calculus running through most of the coaches's heads -- or they just assume he's playing for Fran and haven't given it a moments thought.

Bossi knows...just like every other D1 school knows...why and the world would they waste their time?

Hearing this just makes me more giddy about the future of iowa bb :)
I don't know. Reading his quote that he'd like to have Notre Dame recruit him, is a little troubling. Dad coached there, mom played there. I still think playing for dad, and with his brother will win the day but..........

Maybe other coaches have seen the wrath of Fran on the sidelines and assume Patrick wouldn't want to upset his father? Lol

...I'm just amazed this gets time. Brossi must have had a slow day.

we also need to understand that Patrick (just like Connor) didnt get the chance to go thru the recruiting process because schools 'know' where they are going...they don't or didn't get to take official visits...to get the ' treatment'...why? because no one is going to waste their time or waste an allowed official visit.

I'm sure Patrick would love to get to go to Notre Dame on an official visit..what 16 year old wouldn't. I don't think Mike Brey is that stupid unless he did it as a favor to his friends (McCafferys)...and if he did...Brey better not show Patrick anything too vital...Patrick would run back and tell Dad...;)
