Schools Matt Campbell has Turned Down So Far: Washington, $7M/yr

I like what Campbell's doing in Ames. The Clones play a fun brand of football. Sooner or later some big name school will make him a great offer...until then, both he and ISU are benefitting from the relationship

Not getting vaccinated is stupid in the first place but throwing away 3 million and a chance to live in the Northwest over Ames rather than get vaccinated? Holy fck that would be the mother of all stupidity.
I think you're confused. It was the WSU coach who wasn't vaccinated. I'd be very surprised if Campbell isn't, considering the way he handled the covid thing with the team last year.

So any time an Iowa State coach has consecutive 7+ wins their coach will be in high demand?

Kinda tough to build a program under those circumstances.

stupid aspiration wise but smart financially. like KF he can make way more winning 8 games a year for 20 years at ISU.

He also does PSAs telling people to get vaccinated which would be very strange for someone who won’t get the vaccine.

With all due respect, some of you guys need to travel a bit more.

Seattle has its f***ed up progressive douchebags (did I say that right?), but it's still a world class city in a beautful area. (Most of the idiocy you read about happens in a 4x4 block area downtown. It's a much larger metro) The University of Washington ranks much higher than ISMoo in most every measure. (other than animal husbandry) The area in general is incredibly beautiful.

Yes, it's known for the rainy season but it doesn't ice up for weeks at a time or have a snow pack other than on the mountains. It's a much more temperate winter than Iowa.

Seattle vs Ames, IA. Please. It ain't even close. The only person who might think so would be...well...one from Ames.

You were referring to the likelihood that TV money in the new conference will be less? Makes sense. I misunderstood because "Tier Two" has a specific meaning when discussing the subject. No big deal.
No worries ... thanks for the details about the specifics concerning tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 deals. That's not something I usually pay much attention to.

Given the quality of programs like Oklahoma State and Iowa State ... what do you forecast will be the future of the conference?

UW is a harder turn around than ISU in a tougher conference. They are lucky to get a good coach from a G5. DeBoer could have stayed a few more years in Fresno and likely found much greener pastures. It's a very tough place to win. I think Campbell will stay at ISU as I don't think he is a serious candidate for any major jobs just rebuilds. UW is a rebuilding job and it's a lateral move in terms of program prestige but in a tougher conference. I think ND will look to land an NFL guy if they can't get Fickell.
Did you just type that (worst power 5 program of all time) Iowa State and 2 time national champion (and 2016 playoff participant) Washington have similar program prestige?

Is your brain broken?

Seattle blows, been there many times. I would still take the job for that raise though, regardless of cost of living. 3 million is plenty extra, and that cost of living stuff only affects poors.

Would add the Mel Tucker stuff as another poster said, gauranteed contract, no vax requirement. And I would buy a place in east Washington to get the eff out of Seattle often. And another place for off season. What a sissy for turning it down.
I like the food in Seattle. There are definitely things to do there ... which is cool. Since my political leanings are pretty far left of center ... I appreciate that they're not crazy conservative. However, on the flip side ... I have some conservative friends whom I trust who've been critical (in a fair way) of their experiences with how some of the liberalism in the pacific northwest can be stupidly dogmatic. I draw the line at dogmatism ... I abhor nearly any form of dogmatism (I'm quite dogmatic on my stand against dogmatism).

However, on the flip side ... it can be rainy as shit (depending on the season). Furthermore, the traffic there is absolutely horrendous ... not a fan of that either.

Also, like many formerly cool places ... it's sadly gotten too "yuppified."

Like any place ... you take the good with the bad.

Quality of life??? Much of that can be rather subjective, no?

Cost of living certainly can be calculated ... go to any cost of living calculator. Do it ... you'll find that around $4 million in Ames is considered to be roughly equivalent to $6.7 million (ish) in Seattle. I checked a few different ones ... but most landed in that ballpark.

I lived in coastal California before ... loved being so close to the beach and the mountains ... and the temperatures year-round were terrific. However, the cost of food is outlandish. The cost of housing is even more ridiculous. If you want to have kids ... the education system, by and large, sucks shit (you could pay a premium for private schools ... and they would still be far inferior compared to many midwestern public high schools).

Also, I'm originally from somewhat more rural Iowa ... so I am not the biggest fan of larger urban centers.
It would be interesting to see the math and assumptions behind those calculators. I’m very aware of the difference in housing but I feel like a year or two at that $2.7m/yr higher salary should pretty well cover that difference. For reference I saw that Lincoln Riley’s contract included getting a $6m house in the LA area. So rough math assume that same place would cost just $1m in Ames so a $5m difference.

And then your biggest expense (housing) is covered and every year after that you can pocket the higher salary. I get all of the other things that can cost more (private school, taxes, restaurants, etc) but just struggling to see how that adds up to $2.7m more every year of a 10yr coaching contract.

Admirable. I’ll give him that. It makes utterly no sense from a career standpoint, but he sticks to his principles.
What it indicates to me is he might be afraid to coach at a school with higher expectations then he has now.

And maybe, just maybe, he's having doubts about his own coaching abilities given how his team fell on their faces this season.

Is there really much difference in $4M/year in Gilbert Iowa vs $7M at another school. You can't spend $4M a year in Iowa.

Bottom line to me... Matty doesn't have confidence in himself to take a high pressure gig.

Maybe I'm the only one that agrees with MC on this one. UW does have a lot of positives, but not enough (even 3 mil/year more) for me to take the job.

The amount he gets paid in Iowa is roughly equivalent to 6.7 million in Seattle. When you also account for the unprecedented control and job security he enjoys at Ames ... the UW offer is low.

There WILL be the issue that Big 12 likely quickly becomes a second tier conference ... and that will dilute his current marketability. However, until then ... it's obvious that he has a sweet deal at Iowa State.

It will be interesting to see how the Iowa State budget contracts as they only obtain 2nd tier TV rights.
Any coach making $4 mill a year really don't have too much to worry about. Most wives can't spend that kind of money 😇

are you saying that it costs 2.7 million more per year to live in seattle than it does in Ames?" hard to beleive
It doesn’t…apparently math is hard. You’d be looking at almost 15 million in a 5 year span according to my ‘old math.’ That is definitely worth the move in my broke ass position.

Don James was 150-60 there and shared a natty. Has anyone achieved anything like that in Ames?

But we are talking about UW and it is a Washington state mandate.

I have family that's UDub alumni and donors and from everything I've been hearing from them and their donor friends (2nd hand info) is that interest was expressed in Campbell but they never formally made an offer. Also, for the people talking about the lowball offers, remember that they still need to find a men's basketball coach and they're still paying on some sort of softball discrimination suit. I believe it was softball. Too lazy to look it up

There are a lot of reasons why someone might turn down that job. Being afraid of the higher expectations is certainly one of them, but not the only reason. I don't like Ames at all (spent too much time there since my daughter - no pics - is a Senior there now). However, I have zero interest in living in a large metropolitan area. I'd take $4 mil in Ames over $7 mil in Seattle all day long. Better job security, lower crime, just a more pleasant, worry free life style in Ames. I don't know if he has kids, but not uprooting them and having them grow up and be educated in a medium sized college town means a lot to a family man. I'm not assuming MC is a family man, but I am, so turning that down would be a no-brainer for me.

People have a tendency to make assumptions about other people's motivation based on their own personal beliefs, desires, and preferences.

If I could forecast the future of ANY conference, I'd sell the information, not give it away on a message board :) . But since you asked, here are some semi-educated guesses:

* It will remain a "power" conference in terms of getting an assured spot in an expanded playoff format;
* The bowl affiliations won't be that much worse, largely because they aren't very good now;
* The payout to each school will be significantly less than it is now, although the effects won't kick in until 2027 or 2028;
* It will be one of the strongest, if not the strongest, basketball conferences in the country;
* There will be further reorganizations.

Some of you have your heads in the sand by just looking at the dollar amounts. Yes money is usually very high up on the reasons why coaches switch jobs but it’s been pointed out by several posters that when you account for cost of living it’s not that much more.

Plus he’s worshiped in Ames, he can go 7-5 every year and Clown fans will build him a statue. It wouldn’t surprise me if he isn’t holding out for better offers, possibly even Notre Dame, but it also wouldn’t surprise me if he stayed put. If he’s as good as everyone says he is there will be other jobs with better offers.

B12 has already been dropped from the Power Conference ranks. Did it get an invite to the Alliance? No. Well, there's your answer. It's already been decided.

Exactly how I feel.

He can turn in “decent” results at a traditional bottom feeder like ISU and be considered a god. But if he needs to consistently win 9+ games……he’s in trouble.

He can only win 7-8 games at ISU for so long before their fans get restless and want more and want someone to take them over the hump and beat Iowa, win a conference championship, high rankings, etc. They've done it before with Dan Mac and to a lesser extent Rhoads. MC should take a long hard look at where their careers are out and what happens to those that stay in Ames too long.

U of Washington (Seattle), not WSU.

This is what I was referring to.

Did you not read what you were responding to?
The school Campbell was linked to is a public university in Washington State. It's a state law. Doesn't matter where the other coach is from. Campbell's reported offer was from UW which is in Seattle.

Washington had success with Peterson and was ok with Starkasian. Before and after UW has been a dumpster fire. In a much better conference but other than the Peterson years, pretty mediocre to abysmal. I would liken them to a better Vanderbilt in terms of program overall. Now it's true that UWs best years are better, but ISU has been more consistent as a winning program though lots of 7-8 win seasons. Steve S brought 7-8 win seasons to UW and Peterson had a strong run with three 10 win seasons . But before Steve S and the last two years UW had a lot of 3-4 win seasons. I just don't see it as a step up given how bad they were before the 2010 season.
Washington was very good under coach Don James in the 1980's. They went to two consecutive Rose Bowls in 1981, where they lost to Michigan, 23-6, and in 1982, where they beat Iowa, 28-0.

To be fair, the quality of programs in the new Big 12 might include two playoff teams this year.
To be fair when you have to project future alignment as current results, you obviously don't have an argument support today's reality. The "New Big 12" is now the NEW talking point for the Clones...was are scraping the bottom.
