Scott Dochterman (of the Athletic) wonders why IOWA fans want the Coaches fired after every loss

Gee....what could possibly be the reason he picked 2105 as the starting point? It's a real head-scratcher. And then to admit he didn't even bother factoring in strength of schedule proves he's not a serious person when it comes to this sort of analysis.
If he even bothered to look at the last column of his data and compare with teams having similar "success" against below .500 teams I think he would have his answer. From that image alone Iowa is in the elite company of Fresno State and Liberty. Be more competitive against the "good" teams and don't shit the bed against teams that don't even make it to bowl games.

Indiana is an anomoly. You know it I know it everybody knows it.
Indiana wanted to be a winner and got the players they needed to do so. Next your will be another story everyone will be gone.
The coach knew what he had to do and just did it.
If some how they end up winning the national title it will pay it's self over 1000%.
It will also remove the stigma of why a smaller school with cold winters can't win

Ferentz should be fired because of the UCLA result. Scott is just being disingenuous and he has seemed to move to more of a contrarian over the past few years. His point is valid about Iowa's record over the past few years, many teams are having bad seasons and cannot find the right coach. Iowa has had some good wins this year and 2 bad losses.
The injury part doesn't really resonate, didn't UCLA have a lot of players out as well?

UCLA is just a better team and it was a road game.
The problem with his argument is that the loss to UCLA was a program loss and that Kirk Ferentz is not going to be our coach as long as guys like Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno and Amos Alonzo Stagg, nor should he.

We're not gonna be wheeling Kirk out for his 38th season just to hold on to hope that we can rekindle the magic of the 2000s and help him chase 300 career wins.

Iowa needs to move on and the sooner the better.

It’s pretty hard to argue that the posters on this site don’t overreact after a loss.

Before the UCLA game everyone was talking about how difficult of a game this would be for multiple reasons.

Then, we end up with our 4th string QB in the game and still fight back to tie it at 17 all.

We lost by 3 in a game many were not feeling great about going into the game.

Yes, the line play was disappointing. But, I remember when posters were claiming they would be happy if the Offense improved to around 90th in the country.

They overachieve that and we move the bar of expectations higher. Is that totally fair? Let’s remember this is just year 1 of Lester as OC.

I still think better days are ahead. Anyone who thought we were going to be Top 20 in the country, when installing a new Offense with BF recruits were not being very realistic.

or an example of what a good hire can do. All in your perspective.

Clinging to Kirk because there's no possible way to get a good hire is weak sauce. He's leaving sometime soon anyway.
There are exceptions like Indiana but when Kirk does leave and we have a new head coach expect a different style of football but don't bet all your money on a BIG title or a natty anytime soon.

Just constantly devaluing everything your program has accomplished. "Yeah but whataboutit ..."

Iowa's 6 Top-5 wins since 2000 (4th among Big Ten programs):

2008 vs. No. 3 Penn State (finished 11-2)
2009 vs. No. 4 Penn State (finished 11-2)
2010 vs. No. 6 Michigan State (finished 11-2)
2016 vs. No. 2 Michigan (finished 10-3)
2017 vs. No. 3 Ohio State (finished 12-2)
2021 vs. No. 4 Penn State (finished 7-6)

Media everywhere has almost no credibility anymore. They are all just shills for their side.

I never once thought that would be a good bet.

It's disingenuous to claim that fans are calling for KF's head because of any particular loss. It's an accumulation of frustration because of KF's constant mismanagement of the offense, especially at the quarterback position. How in the hell did we get in the position of having to play a 5th string walk-on in the most important position on the team? How is it ok that Iowa's QB play has been literally dead-f*cking-last in the nation since 2019? Tim Lester has breathed a bit of life into this year's offense, but KF's utter incompetence in recruiting and developing QBs has made Iowa football nearly unwatchable. With the exception of three 40-point games this season, even Iowa's WINS are excruciating. It ain't fun to watch Hawkeye football, even when we win. That's why people are calling for KF to retire.

I never once thought that would be a good bet.
The venom that is now being directed at KF by some fanaticals will not subside it will only be redirected. Who's next Phil? Levar? the next head coach? The next 3 QB's? There's no natty coming our way anytime soon if ever and with 18 teams in the BIG that title is a far reach.

Everyone wanting to burn everything down after every loss seem to forget that sometimes you just don't play well. It's not a video game.

Anyone that has played sports knows the feeling when it just isn't your day. I used to know before games when my team wasn't going to play well, even against opponents we should beat.

Agree 100% with Scott.

In general it seemed like there was just something else off and we were the less physical team on the field.

Yep. Let's talk about them in a couple of years. He brought his own groceries into Indiana. Now he has to recruit outside to bring them in against everyone else. I don't know how big Indiana's NIL is, but I bet it ain't better than somewhere in the middle.

Shaft is as asleep at the wheel as Doucherman. Vegas had Iowa as a 5.5 favorite knowing full well we were on QB 3. Most expected a win at the Rose Bowl. This schedule is one of the weakest schedules in the conference and KF still found a way to at least four - likely five or six - losses. Installing a “new offense” which is remarkably similar to previous offenses, has nothing to do with the result.

"Fans are just tired of watching the same old shit from one week to the next."

This may very well be true. Wanting Kirk gone for this reason may have merit but with a coach change don't expect a natty/conference trophy anytime soon. Which then will mean another coach change and then another and then another etc. (Nebraskaish).
It's not really that, it is fans who want them to be absolutely perfect game after game and it has to be entertaining as we know from last season, because any old win doesn't entertain. And I repeat again, Aranda and Gundy have told us out in the open, it is all about the highest bidder in today's college football.

You could go get Saban and he will lose at Iowa too. Whoever is the coach will need a lot of money to compete for the best players.

The pedestal our fanatics have put Indiana on and guess what their not going to win a natty or the BIG. It's all down hill for them.

So if UCLA is a better team and it was a road game why would we fire him?

He's a dope. At this point it's Ferentz fatigue and most are ready for a change. I can't explain the two losses this year but they were bad.

Can anyone explain our QB depth chart to me? So far in this thread I've seen Sullivan referred to as our 3rd stringer and Stratton as our 5th string. What am I missing here?

QB1: McNamara
QB2: Sullivan
QB3: Lainez
QB4: Stratton
QB5: Some DB that apparently played QB in high school from what the announcers said during the game.

As for the content of this thread...it's the fatigue. I noticed he didn't report our record against top 25 teams over the last 4 years or so....not good at all. Not even competitive.

Ingratiating yourself to the coaches you cover. Makes life easier
In fairness, Doc questions the coaches all the time. That’s part of why this is frustrating to see. He’s allowed to criticize the coaches, but fans aren’t.

Granted, he’s more specifically going after fans who want Kirk fired (not just those who are critical), but still, it’s just not a good look. You’re always going to have fans like that.

This idea that Iowa automatically goes into a massive tailspin when KF leaves is ridiculous.
Could it happen,,,sure.
But this program is old and stale right now and recruiting is already struggling.
NIL is likely not even in top half of conference as well.

These are very fair points and I count myself and one who wants Kirk to step down.

I do not care why/how he is gone, just end it before it gets worse.

He's going to leave soon. Whether it's at the end of 2025 or 2029, he's gone. Better to control the timeline and move when the ideal candidate is available rather than be held hostage.
