Seriously, what is Trump’s goal?

Yes I have many I've been there stories. You can also deduce from my number of posts and the time I've been a member I don't waste my time often talking sense into someone. They simply are recommend fired or demoted in real life. You're badly misinformed as to how economics and the real world in boardrooms or political circles work. Government and business both have the capability to drive society forward or make their existing untenable. You're waxing for a time that will never exist, and you're remembering selectively. Grow up and wake up to making something outside of a cynical isolated existence of your life.
Have a good day.

"Why would I want to spend 9k on a tractor when the darkies will do it for chicken scratch"

1850s democrat (probably)
I've had you in the HBOT idiot jail for a very, very long time, but I had to take a look at why @RileyHawk was blasting you here.

What's funny is some posters on here have mentioned you as someone who at least has some intellectual ability, smarts, savvy, etc.

They're dead wrong or maybe they're just being nice to the guy with a traumatic brain injury.

Anyway, back to HBOT jail for ya, don't bother replying and hoping that I'll read your classless zinger. I won't read anymore of your drivel again, I can assure you of that.

Controlled, predictable recession that was almost certainly to come over the next 4 years anyway,

Recession was expected by most after Covid.

But Biden passed the Infrastructure Bill and IRA that eased us into a period of economic growth most did not think was possible. And heading into 2025, our economy was the envy of the world

That is all trashed now because of ignorant MAGAs, like yourself.

You’re not missing anything.

There’s a plan but it’s incomprehensible and contradictory.

We put 10% tariffs on countries that don’t tariff us or we have free trade agreements with.

We used trade deficits in our tariff calculations so a country like Madagascar that is poor as shit got a 47% tariff slapped on it

I could go on but it’s a convoluted mess.

Looks like someone regrets not being a "Never Trumper" last year....

He may not give a damn about the Chinese but he sure as shit wants "ford" and "craftsman" to be built by Americans again.
Then he is an idiot. American line workers suck. They are fat and uneducated. See American Factory

Plus, those dumb workers cost a lot, which would cause cars to become more expensive. Not to mention the shoddy work they'd do would cost more in recalls.

It's unfortunate you look at America that way.

I'm old enough to remember when calling something the "Cadillac" meant it was thr top of its class.

Well that is about to be very tested.
You are just throwing shit at the wall.

You never acknowledged that China holds a significant amount of our debt. That is problematic for us at best. You also never acknowledged that China is not living “paycheck to paycheck” but does indeed have the largest foreign reserves in the world.

I’ll believe the starvation outcome when I see it.

The China elites are not, the China labor force is. And to my point, people will starve before the elites of a communist country feel pain.

SIAP but I think this is a good and reasonable explanation.

This week you will read many confused economists and political pundits who won't understand how the tariffs make economic sense. That's because they don't. They aren't designed as economic policy. The tariffs are simply a new, super dangerous political tool. You see, our founders created a President with limited and checked powers. They specifically put the power of spending and taxation in the hands of the legislature. Why? Because they watched how kings and despots used spending and taxes to control their subjects.

British kings used taxation to reward loyalty and punish dissent. Our own revolution was spurred by the King's use of heavy taxation of the colonies to punish our push for self governance. The King's message was simple: stop protesting and I'll stop taxing. Trump knows that he can weaken (and maybe destroy) democracy by using spending and taxation in the same way. He is using access to government funds to bully universities, law firms and state and local governments into loyalty pledges. Healthy democracies rely on an independent legal profession to maintain the rule of law, independent universities to guard objective truth and provide forums for dissent to authority, and independent state/local government to counterbalance a powerful federal government.

But the private sector also plays a rule to protect democracy. Independent industry has power. The tariffs are Trump's tool to erode that independence. Now, one by one, every industry or company will need to pledge loyalty to Trump in order to get sanctions relief. What could Trump demand as part of a quiet loyalty pledge? Public shows of support from executives for all his economic policy. Contributions to his political efforts. Promises to police employees' support for his political opposition. The tariffs are DESIGNED to create economic hardship. Why? So that Trump has a straight face rationale for releasing them, business by business or industry by industry. As he adjusts or grants relief, it's a win-win: the economy improves and dissent disappears. And once Trump has the lawyers, colleges and industry under his thumb, it becomes very hard for the opposition to have any viable space to maneuver. Trump didn't invent this strategy. It's the playbook for democratically elected leaders who want to stay in power forever.

he tariffs aren't economic policy. They are political weapons. But as long as we see this clearly, we can stop him. Public mobilization is working. Today, a few Republicans joined Democrats to vote against one set of tariffs. The people still have the power.

Apparently I needed to emphasize the acknowledgment i was going over the top more.

Sometimes you need to say something so far outlandish that it creates a stop gap on how stupid your opponent is willing to get.

Example: I want trans rights, I want everyone to be comfortable in their own skin and feel appreciated, what I won't do, is watch a man beat a woman and be celebrated for it.

I started saying that years ago, and at thr time it was outlandish, no look at 2025.

I don't think you guys want slaves, I think you are so pretzled with orange man bad you are taking whatever shots you get. You yourself has said the bad plan today great plan next week line. You and I have discussed the ideology in business of fail fast recover faster, you acknowledge something needed to happen, yet, orange man bad.

Yeah, dude, the markets are getting their asskicked, we will be a better stronger country for this.
While I disagree with a lot of what you wrote (not unusual for you and I 😜), I appreciate the spirit in which you wrote it. I hope you have a great weekend Whiskey and hopefully this tariff nonsense gets settled soon,

It's unfortunate you look at America that way.

It still means that to some. That doesn't mean Cadillac is still the top of it's class.

Metaphors have sustaining power.

Those jobs he’d want to bring back would mostly be done by robotics. Sorry 1980 isn’t coming back. The cotton gin, put a lot of people out of work as well.
The cotton gin actually increased the demand of enslaved people.

Thanks! Is it a recent creation or were you anticipating this throughout the campaign season? Trump's out there promising lower prices, stock market growth, jobs, the usual blather, but all that time you were thinking that secretly he was going for the deliberate recession early on, so he could do all the good stuff after?
No, it's a recent creation. I didn't see this coming. This opinion formed post election. I still fully believe we'll see all the things he promised. I think there's going to be some growing pains though.

I understand democrats are going to find a other justifications for "doing nothing".

We did nothing, and we lost ground every day for 40 years.

Even if you want to say this is the worst plan in history, a plan, and then corrections, are far better than writing blank checks as the world bypasses us further and further.

I'm going to go over the top here but just so it's out there.... the democrats are showing they were never actually against slave ownership, they would just prefer to not have to see the slaves today.
I think you have your parties reversed.

Yes, the slave owners became Dixiecrats that transitioned to Republicans. The carpetbaggers and scaliwags were all Republicans. It was the main reason the south were democrats for a long time.

My family was until the 20th century.

Now your statement that Democrats don’t want to see the slaves today.

I have to ask, what are you saying? Democrats don’t want to see descendants of slaves? They don’t like black people?

What point are you trying to make?

Did the communist party member walk you around the ghettos? Im sure they reqlly gave you that behind the scenes look while touring the great wall. Cuz I've been walked through the favelas of Brazil that pay for the houses on the hill.

You having someone who has started a company in China doesn't excuse the fact you are willing to live a higher quality of life here knowing they exist here, while white knighting for human rights here. Pick a lane.
I’m curious. What did you learn from the favelas? What city in particular?

The Brazilian government has a unique way of treating the poor.

I hope you have some good info and not just what was in the movies.

By promoting the return of domestic manufacturing in key areas of the economy,.. Steel, auto, semi-conductors, pharma etc,.. Manufacturing jobs were the foundation of the US middle class and they can be again...
Yeah. Musky and his boys are just raring to invest in steel. Jeez, dude. You smoking crack?
All of your list is maybe, hopefully, not…

No I mean you seem to be ok with a 10 year old making your shit for peanuts as long as it happens some place you don't have to see.

Twist all you want chica, you guys are in a bad spot. You either have to support Trump or fold to "cheap" labor.

That would have been Sao Paulo and it was a very unique experience. We were lead around by the elder or we clearly would have been robbed.

I would say roughly 20 years later the moment that stuck with me was as we were walking through, all the "houses" are just cardboard and plywood nailed together, dogs everywhere, someone started playing crossroads by bone thugs. That always stuck with me.

Let's ignore the huge logistical hurdles and say that Trump's goal of bringing large scale manufacturing back to the US will be met. Won't the difference in wages passed on to consumers essentially have the same effect (or greater) as a tariff on foreign-made goods?
This isn’t what he is doing. This process would take decades.

Bring manufacturing back to the U.S.? Whiskey says “Nike is coming home”

I get targeting certain industries or categories of products, but otherwise this is ridiculous. We don’t need to be making 90% of the widgets and trinkets and all the other cheap goods lining the shelves at Walmart and every other retailer.
Nor do I sense anyone wants to pay more for these goods.

Is it to raise revenue? Isn’t that just a massive wealth transfer from consumers to corporations? And then to the ultra rich to help pay for tax cuts?
Again, how do we not pay much more for goods if the tariffs stay in place?

What’s the plan? What am I missing.
Play more golf, crash the market, and then give billionaires more money. Thats a start.

MAGAnomics

To the extent that it's coherent, they seem to believe:

If people get money (wages, whatever) they just eat it directly. They don't pass it on to someone else, who then passes it on to someone else, etc...

Related: there are no gains from trade, individually or between countries.

If the government spends money, it's just fake somehow. All economic activity related to the government is an illusion, except SpaceX and Tesla subsidies.

It takes a few weeks, couple months tops, to set up a "factory."
