I'll bet you thought its Tyler Cook. OK it is. The kid (repeat KID) is an amazing basketball athlete..wow something you all didn't know. ;) Defense will come ... because he wants it to.

Side note...some say I'm a Fran defender (OK I probably am)...but didn't like the minute rotations last night...I know we want to win the game...I say the hell with a game on Nov 17th...Ellingson & Pemsl should have played more than 5-6 minutes. I know the defense was pretty bad...but part of it is getting your guys on the same page during the game (communicating)...they cant learn to play together when 2 of them are on the bench...IMO.

I liked that Moss got in the game...I hope Fran continues to use him in spot minutes.

still not an ellingson fan. his minutes were ok.

One of my concerns (defensively last night) was 0 charges taken, unless i missed one. Seriously how does a team drive to the hoop that much and you're not able to take one charge. You can talk all you want about new faces, talking on defense, and strategy but that is a teaching/coaching issue. I would certainly hope Fran would have discussed that at half time. That is an attitude that starts with the head coach on down. There is no reason, with the athletes we have, that there would be no charges taken and to have given up as many layups as we did.

Several blocks on Iowa could've been called charges for sure and it did seem like the Hawks were going for those calls; the two that come to mind are when Peter was steamrolled just over half-court and when a SH forward (can't remember which one) put his shoulder down into Nick and tossed him aside.

Woodbury was a staple on defense the last few seasons; he was the one in back calling out the matches and switches. When you're starting a bunch of frosh, who have never played at this level, you're going to have some growing pains.

Fran has improved the level of most of his teams and players every year he's been here, and every year they've been in the program. I expect nothing different with this class of kids, and he could really turn them into one helluva ball club if/when they buy into and learn the schemes.

Defense was my the biggest concern and will be for the remainder of the year.

The part I noticed, though, was that Cook would get the ball repeatedly and then all of a sudden the team would settle for jump shots rather than try to get it in to him. I believe that made a big difference near the end of the game when he likely could have gotten one or 2 of their big men fouled out. Having a dominant force in the middle is good but if you stop feeding him, he will stop being as aggressive and not open up the jump shots for Pete.

On the defensive side there is another player, from last year, that I have not seen brought up in the discussions. Mike G. was a really good player at limiting dribble penetration...(Yogi was the exception). That said I think the vast majority of us fans thought that with this new long and athletic roster we would be an even better defensive team in the not to distant future. I think that with Moss and Dailey spending most of the time on the bench we have not yet seen the defensive potential of this team.

ya stopping Yogi was indeed a challenge...

Obviously the answer is Cook. But damn Nic Baer does so much stuff that doesn't show up in the box score. I only get to see one or two games in person per year so I was pretty surprised. Baer does so many little things that go unnoticed. He tipped a lot of passes, closed gaps on the press, hustled for balls going out of bounds. Just love seeing 100% effort at all times.

That is all.

Nicholas has been doing that for a long time...going unnoticed. Just like every other D1 school in the country...except Iowa.
