After the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, 10 of the 12 remaining Loyola women's basketball players asked to be released from their scholarships. Some of the players reached out to media outlets, like the Chicago Tribune, and alleged player mistreatment from coach and Hall of Fame player Sheryl Swoopes. It caused concern within the school, and in mid-April an investigation was launched.
The conclusion apparently came Sunday evening in the form of a brief statement, as Loyola broke through the holiday weekend news cycle with an announcement that Swoopes had been terminated.
"Sheryl Swoopes is no longer serving as the women's basketball coach at Loyola University Chicago," the statement read. "A search for her replacement will begin immediately. Loyola thanks Sheryl for her service to the women's basketball program."
Swoopes had a 31-62 record in her three seasons leading the program, but the record seems less concerning than the number of complaints from players requests to transfer after each of the last two seasons. Five players told the Chicago Tribune in April that Swoopes threatened to take away scholarships as a motivational tool and that emotional, intimidating coaching style led to the decision to leave.
A statement released by a public relations firm representing Swoopes highlighted disappointment in the timing of the decision.
"In response to the inquiries made about the investigation, Sheryl is comfortable with its outcomes," the statement read. "She is disappointed, however, with the actions that have followed. In respect of the holiday, we plan to have Sheryl's voice heard at an appropriate time."
Swoopes was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in April and is scheduled to be inducted in September. She was a three-time Olympic Gold Medalist as a player and named MVP of the WNBA three times during her professional career.

This makes me laugh too. She talks about getting bullied online after making those comments, but she literally got fired for bullying/mistreating her players.
Agreed. It's amazing how someone can speak so confidently when so ignorant, but I don't think it was racist, just terribly uninformed. I'd like to see her correct it, but whatever, not worth getting offended and up in arms over.

Let’s be honest here, she only said the 40 shots per game thing because she heard Mulkey say it. Misinformation roll downhill and gains speed.
It sounds to me like she doesn't watch iowa, and all of her information about Caitlin is from people who are in sec fans. I would expect there to be a lot of conversations about records set by people with covid years. Almost every every wnba player I've heard talking about the transition talks about how they thought they were awesome going in and the first year was a reality check. So her point about being dominant to start is fair. The stuff about records and being wrong about Caitlins stats, not so much. It could be a little but hurt over having her tourney record broken by a player that had an extra game, it could be ignorance, or it could be racism. We don't know for sure.... so we should probably allow for the same amount of consideration we would hope to get when we make a mistake when talking about someone of a different race.

100%. I think for WBB legends like Staley and Swoopes it's the fact that CC has turned into such a media phenom, darling, GOAT, that drives them crazy. I don't think they dislike her, I think they dislike the national adoration she gets and the fact that she is THE story in WBB week in and week out.

Bingo….just because one is a “celebrity” doesdn’t mean they can’t and don’t spout bullshit and lies….and when the media allows these folks unfettered access, the media needs to be responsible for calling out bullshit and lies when it is patently false.
Ther media does this frequently with pols ands celebrities by claiming they are just “reporting the story”……,their responsibility includes pointing out lies and inaccuracies spoken, too.

Swoopes was obviously misinformed, ill prepared and a bit lazy. The rest of the thoughts ITT as to the reason she made the erroneous statements is pure conjecture and opinion. I'll give SS the benefit of the doubt that she isn't racist in regards to her feelings about CC. Time to move on...
