Shots fired in Donald Trump's vicinity at golf course.

Never heard that early M-16 wasn’t accurate. Problems with jamming, but not accuracy.

Problems appeared immediately. Soldiers were often not adequately trained to maintain the new rifle (in fact some were told the new rifle was “self-cleaning”), nor were they always given cleaning supplies or instructions. The harsh jungle climate corroded the rifle’s chamber, exacerbated by the manufacturer’s decision against chrome-plating the chamber. The ammunition that accompanied the rifles sent to Vietnam was incompatible with the M16 and was the principal cause of the failure to extract malfunctions. The result was the M16 often jammed, making the rifle “about as effective as a muzzleloader,” in the words of one officer. Men were killed in combat because they couldn’t return fire until the malfunction was cleared. Congress investigated and the rifle and its ammunition were incrementally modified, greatly improving its reliability over the next few years. Troop training was also improved. But the damage to the M16’s reputation could not be undone, and many soldiers remained deeply skeptical of their rifle through the war’s end.
The M16 wasn’t particularly accurate. That’s more just what Colt was building at the time than a flaw with the AR-15 design. A tight upper with a good free floating barrel, and you can make it a sub MOA gun.

The jamming thing is more a manual-of-arms issue. You have to clean and maintain an AR-15, even the piston variants. The AK47 is clearly more robust, but the AR is no slouch. The GWOT proved that.

So far assassination attempts 2 school shootings 1. Perhaps if we have more assassination attempts gun control will gain more traction.
No guns for Dems? Guns isn't an issue I vote on but that seems like a policy that might make things better I guess.

Oh, so here it comes, the howls from the MAGAs to cut all aid to Ukraine because Zelensky ordered a hit on Trump.
Pretty good bet. Great cause that he could end up hurting.

KYIV, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Ryan Routh, the reported suspect in an apparent assassination attempt on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Sunday, stayed in Kyiv in the summer of 2022 to encourage people to fight for Ukraine, he told a news outlet that year.
CNN, Fox News and The New York Times identified Routh, 58, of Hawaii, as the suspect citing unidentified law enforcement officials. The FBI declined to comment and Reuters could not independently verify his identity.
"A lot of the other conflicts are grey but this conflict is definitely black and white. This is about good versus evil," Routh said in an interview posted by Newsweek Romania in June 2022. His comments suggested he was in Kyiv at the time.
Some four months into Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Routh perceived the war to be at a critical juncture and called for more international support.
When asked about what he was doing in Ukraine, Routh said his initial goal was to come to fight but after the plan did not work out, because his age and lack of military experience meant he was not accepted, he turned to promoting the cause to others.

The Semafor article identified Routh as the head of the International Volunteer Center, which it said helped foreigners wanting to support Ukraine through military and humanitarian means.

Dude certainly had a media footprint:

NYTimes, Financial Times, Semafor, and others, paraded the shooter around with a number of quotes about Ukraine and Taiwan:

FT News:

"It's a pretty big yard, but the front bank is completely full," Ryan Routh, an American volunteer who started the memorial last year, said. "There may be 10,000 at this point. 'Flags of the fallen' is what I've been calling it."
Routh, a former construction worker who lives in Hawaii, is one of the thousands of foreigners who, after seeing news reports about the invasion, travelled into Ukraine in early 2022 to volunteer as fighters or medics.

Semafor:
"Most of the Ukrainian authorities do not want these soldiers," said Ryan Routh, head of the International Volunteer Center in Ukraine, a private organization which helps foreigners seeking to assist the war effort connect with military units and aid groups. "I have had partners meeting with [Ukraine's Ministry of Defense] every week and still have not been able to get them to agree to issue one single visa."

The New York Times article backs up the Russian Defense Ministry's information regarding the countries which are actively trying to recruit mercenaries to join the fight in Ukraine. It wrote about Ryan Routh, a former construction worker from North Carolina who spent several months in Ukraine last year and is now seeking recruits among Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban. He plans to move them to Ukraine from Pakistan and Iran – in some cases, illegally. Nevertheless, dozens of people have apparently expressed an interest.

NYTimes
With Legion growth stalling, Ryan Routh, a former construction worker from Greensboro, N.C., is seeking recruits from among Afghan soldiers who fled the Taliban. Mr. Routh, who spent several months in Ukraine last year, said he planned to move them, in some cases illegally, from Pakistan and Iran to Ukraine. He said dozens had expressed interest. "We can probably purchase some passports through Pakistan, since it's such a corrupt country," he said in an interview from Washington.

Taiwan News
The man behind the wall of banners, Ryan Routh, told CNA that he posted the flags to pay tribute to the nations that have citizens fighting in Ukraine's foreign legion, the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine. Routh said there have been no protests about the presence of the Taiwan flag so far, but even if China is dissatisfied, "I can order another 1,000, they can't touch my flags."

Routh, 56, originally hails from Hawaii, but most recently worked in the construction industry in North Carolina and has no military background. He came to Kyiv more than two months ago to show his support for Ukraine and wanted to join the foreign legion.
However, due to his age, he was unable to do so, and he is instead currently assisting the legion in recruiting volunteers for the Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie units in Kharkiv. Thus far, Routh has assisted in recruiting 70 volunteers to join the fight against Russia.
Routh began posting flags on the wall of a sandbagged monument in Kyiv's Independence Square. He told the news agency that he included Taiwan's flag because he had met at least five Taiwanese volunteers serving in the legion over the past two months and learned about Taiwan's contribution to Ukraine's war effort.
According to Routh, he has yet to receive any protests from China about the presence of the Taiwan flag. He said that any pressure that would come from China would be "nothing" compared to the daily assault by Russian forces on every soldier who supports Ukraine.
He said that he will continue to stay in Kyiv and encourage more people to fight against Russia. European countries deliver truckloads of food, medical supplies, and military equipment, but Ukraine may need three to four times more support, estimated Routh.
The volunteer pointed out that there are only 50 national flags on the stone wall, meaning that there are over 100 countries that do not have a single soldier that has volunteered to fight for Ukraine, "This is unacceptable." He emphasized the war between Russia and Ukraine is a battle of good versus evil.
Routh asserted that at this critical moment, all countries should give their soldiers unpaid leave and provide air tickets to fly to Ukraine to participate in the war to prevent Russia from starting another war. "We should be united and share success and failure, which is what these flags stand for," said Routh.

And Newsweek...

An AK Clone is not a 500 yard rifle! An AR-15 like what the first shooter used is much more accurate and maybe good for 250-300 yards. An AR-10 however with a .308, not that would get you 500 yards.

A .556, within their range, will be more accurate but at 400 yards a 7.62x39 is going to be more accurate.

Weight of the bullet provides significantly more stability.

You can say ARs have higher build qualities but dollar for dollar physics doesn't care about a name, if you want to throw something a long ways, accurately, and "force" is not a concern, you want more weight.

I've never seen it suggested anywhere that an AK47 style rifle would have a tighter MOA than an AR15 at 400 yds.

I hear what you're saying about weight, but the tolerances in the AK are sloppy by design (that's why you can rinse the mud off a rusty one and start firing rounds through it).

A .762x39 has pretty much the same ballistics as a 30-30. Nice 100-150 yard gun. An AK-47 shoots and shoots and shoots because it is built so loose it doesn't jam. Not a 400 yard rifle.

The AK and it's ilk were primarily designed for urban warfare,.. Relatively short barrel, high firing rate, & light load...

What was the intended distance to shoot. It sounds like this guy was waiting at the next hole. Yeah he was 500 yards away when they caught him but it sounds like he was waiting for him to get much closer before taking a shot.
