Should Nathan Burak be redshirted?

We all know the Coaches Brands would never do it, but, if Nathan was willing, should the coaches redshirt him this year? I don't think we have quite enough for a legit title run this year with potential gaping holes at 141, 157, 165 and HW. Next year we have no real replacement for Nathan. So if we take the lumps this year with a team that's ceiling is probably 3rd, we can run out this lineup next year:

125: Gilman
133: Clark
141: Turk
149: Sorenson/Kemerer
157: Sorenson/Kemerer
165: Paddock/Marinelli
174: Meyer
184: Brooks
197: Burak
HW: Stoll/Bradley

I think that's a much better, more consistent lineup with a good shot at winning the team title. This way we have more time to grab a Burak replacement by taking our lumps this year, in a year where we are peripheral contenders at best, and then have Burak come in as a title contender to go along with virtually the same lineup as this year, but with Kemerer instead of Cooper, and possibly Marinelli.

Steven Holloway from Mediapolis was a top 100 recruit (79 on D1CW), which is probably right about where Burak was out of high school.

Tomorrow is a dream that rarely comes to fruition. Today is real. Holding guys out in hopes next year will be a better go is a bad strategy. Something always comes up. The playing field never truly levels or clears out.
Put the very best team out that you can now and let tomorrow take care of itself.

Not knocking your thought. I get it and it has some thought behind it. In my experience, for every one time this sort of things work out, 20 other times it hits you in the ass.

I appreciate the logic, too, Vak. That said, and maybe this is the eternal optimist in me speaking, I'd say we're better than just "peripheral contenders at best". Yes, we'll need some guys to step up, but if our young guys exceed expectations a little, we shore up 141, and our studs wrestle to their potential, we can win this thing this year.

Sure, we don't necessarily have the margin for error that PSU, for example, has this year, but I like our lineup and think they have what it takes to win a team title. Not the favorite, but I'd sure consider us solid contenders.

sorry vak i think Holloway would be at uni if he didn't think he had a shot next year, but i am often wrong. p.s. i really like when you do open mat live events.

I agree with you somewhat Vak...I think our best chance to win will be in the next two years but this line-up....

125: Gilman
133: Clark
141: Turk
149: Sorenson/Kemerer
157: Sorenson/Kemerer
165: Paddock/Marinelli
174: Meyer
184: Brooks
197: Burak
HW: Stoll/Bradley

is a winner. Also, Burak's achilles Macintosh will be gone and he would have a better shot. However, we would have no shot without him this year. None, zilch, nada. It's a lot to gamble on one guy/one season.

Getting a little close to one of my "crazy lineup guy' posts...
But I agree a lot with Vak on this one. B/c of the development of BS, I think less and less about it. I was also thinking that Klapp could fill in. I"m not sure, but maybe Klapp is a Rd12 guy vs Nathan as a finalist.

I would say no as well. As long as there is a decent shot at winning it all, and I think there is this season, why "toss in the towel?"

Some kid may exceed everyone's expectations, teams suffer unexpected surprises (injuries, grades, etc).... you never know. I understand the logic Vak, and might agree if Iowa was rebuilding and with no chance of winning it, but I don't think that's the case.

I'm with Vallholl on Klapp, but I'm probably thinking with my heart more than my wrestling eyes and mind. He's a tough guy and has stepped up when called up no matter what weight he was needed at, but I'm not sure he can consistently beat D1 guys. He's capable of coming out for a dual and winning a hard fought emotional win under the lights, but I'm not sure he can go on a run at B10s or at the National Tournament. In his recent interview, Brands didn't mention anything about it when he talked about Burak. He did have some high praise for him though, calling him "The" example of what you want in a student athlete. I don't think there's a chance Burak redshirts and I don't think it's the best idea for the success of the team. My 2 cents.

Or just trot that lineup out there this year.

The discussion used to be about Iowa redshirting NCAA champs to allow them Olympic years and/or maximize the eligibility of other studs (B Davis, E Banach, P Bush). Now we want to talk about redshirting a low AA and forfeit any title aspirations in the hope that next season's lineup might be slightly better?

How about we talk about how we're going to land and develop more NCAA champs like B Davis, E Banach and P Bush so that we can go back to having those kinds of redshirt conversations instead?

That would be splendid. Make it so........................

you know, Long got 12 years of eligibility. I wonder if Linc Mac has a couple left?

The concept of redshirting Burak would work if there was less of a drop off. If Burak wasn't looking at a top 4 ranking and if Klapp were looking like an AA then I could in good faith make up a crazy lineup suggestion...:)

It's not a slightly better line up. It's much better. We literally have no idea what we're getting at 4 weights this year. Kemerer instead of Cooper? A cemented 141 lber? Right now everyone is just acting as if Brody, a guy wrestling at a weight he has never made in college and in fact was hospitalized when he attempted it, and is also, btw, coming off an injury and may not be ready until mid season, is some sort of lock for anything based off a few good wins from 2 years ago at a different weight.

You've been hanging around Flying Tiger for far too long. I would expect you to know better. That is all.

Noticed he lost in the finals of the freshman 197 to a Grand View kid. Dominated up until then.
Grand View kid Hanson was nationally ranked last year. 2 or 3 time IA champ. I don't see that happening after this year.

Lost to a kid that was the 1A state champ in Iowa last year.

They let 1A guys wrestle in college? Anyways, just means he needs to be coached up.

I really wish they would have let Kemdawg wrestle in the open part of it. Moody and Gunther are real close. You know you are a wrestling junkie when the Grand View Open sounded like a great place to be today...but then spending it in a stand ain't so bad either.

Guys...it's just one tourney but I am worried about the depth. Would be nice to have a guy like Pixley but I don't know if he would be a 197 guy.

I agree. I still believe Holloway will be good. As stated on another thread Hanson was/is a D1 talent who decided to go to Grand View for whatever reason.

Wasn't Colbray intrested in Iowa or have a visit? Maybe he committed somewhere and I forgot. Does anyone know his status?
