from what i read denmark got greenland only in the 1950s and it was based on a explorer reaching there in the 18th century. also the population is entirely inuit (total population is about 56k) and they got self-governance via a referendum in 1979.

Now we have our NATO allies actively discussing invoking article 5 against the US because we might invade Greenland and Canada. Yes, this is much better.

Who said it had to be hostile? They have never really had their own unified state as they were under parts of Denmark and then just recently went on their own. I'm not sure if you know this, but this wouldn't be the first time the US has tried to buy Greenland.
They have said they are not interested and Trump has stated he will not rule out force. And I'm not sure you know this, but the last time the US looked into buying Greenland was 1946.
The only way I will agree to acquire Greenland is if we trade/sell Texas. That would be a massive win for the United States.
