Parents of wrestlers at the level of someone like Drake aren’t very accustomed to seeing their child get taken apart. They’ve been on the other end of it.

Brother, if you think this is a beat down, wait until my mother in law takes a gander her 120 degree slice of rib roast tonight…. As ADS would say, this is light work.
I think Coach Brands did step in and had them wrestle rather than MFF.
Which could happen at any practice which is 10-20 times longer and happens daily. Spencer needed to build his shape and feel competition is the most important thing currently.
This was a 100% screw up by Brands. What possible outcome would have been good for the program:
-Spencer shows Drake isn't close
-Spencer doesn't embarrass a kid who didn't AA
-Spencer loses
-either of them get hurt
I don't see any possibility for any possible positive from wrestling that match.
Spencer's interview was great. He's got the common sense to do what Tom doesn't. Speak on it and put it in your narrative.

A kid who was injured last year. If he’s not injured, he had a shot at AAing, but not guarantee.
I like fiery Lee.

May not have expressed myself correctly. I think Spencer and Gobblin took offense to THE WAY Brands stepped in. I also think Spencer and his coach have differing opinion on how best to get a healthy peaking Spencer Lee in March.

It’s almost New Years, go ahead and like your own post. I think Tom was too busy coaching last night to assuage the internet. We’ve got the “see how we can use this against Iowa” and the “Spencer was mean to a beloved homegrown guy” crowds. This too shall pass.
I have none. I’ll say this though, I find it strange and a bit disrespectful that it seems Spencer makes it a point in interviews this year to let everyone know that he’s calling the shots and will wrestle when he decides to wrestle. None of you find that odd?
Spencer putting the hammer on Drake was completely fine. I just didn’t like the theatrics at the end. I also saw a video on Twitter showing Spencer after his semifinal match. He threw his headgear down and said “I’m done”. Then ran off looking pissed. Tom yelled something at him. I think this thing is less about Drake and more about a disagreement with Tom. I trust Tom will manage it.
I’ve seen him recently say Tomasello was unathletic and a bad wrestler. Others as well but I can’t remember all of them. But several comments similar to that.

If one doesn’t Monday Morning QB the result of the match, ignores the fact that Spencer went 7 minutes in the semis against a guy Ayala would beat, then ignore the positives from there, this is a good point.
Whether right or wrong, multi time champions are going to get special treatment. And Tom and Terry aren’t dumb. You do what you need to do to keep Lee happy. If he decides he wants to leave Iowa, it would be a HUGE blow to the program.
On a different note… curious how Iowa fans are feeling about Frankin’s performance if any don’t mind saying. I’ve been following the kid the past couple of years; I liked how he handled getting beat out his last year of high school. I think an 8-point loss by a true freshman in December to a returning national finalist… in the 197 lb weight class… was somewhat impressive.
I really don't know how I feel about this. While I hate to see all the all to common anymore MFF in these tournaments, I absolutely didn’t expect to see Lee and Drake wrestle. On the other hand, I'm not really disappointed that they did either. Lee proved what anyone with a brain already knew, but Drake is still going to be a hammer in years to come. He just won't be Spencer Lee dominant, which is understandable. Lee could have handled it more gracefully, but I like the 🔥. If there is a rift between the two, it is Tom's job to squash it. On to the next match.

I’m not going to spend 10 minutes so a completely random stranger feels better about an example I gave her.
IMO Drake vs Lee & all the accompanying drama was a big friggin nothing burger. A week from now only a handful of people will remember this miniature speed bump in a season.

I believe Tom or Terry have said the same thing, but this is only in the context of his injury/recovery. Once cleared by doctor's, still Spencer's call on when he wrestles. That's all he was saying.... imo.
