This is how I read the interview as well. He starts by saying 'they' pulled the trigger, then quickly changes to say 'I pulled the trigger'. I'm sure the public non-Iowa perception of Brands running him into the ground isn't lost on him. Of course either way it will get spun negatively against Iowa.

You will find a post when Spencer was interviewed live on ESPN after he defeated Tomasello at nationals and he said, I love that man. We go way back; he used to practice with me when I was younger. He's a great person, great champion etc. It was a classy interview. In another interview, I heard, he talked about the close personal friendship they have with each other, and he tells a story about working out with him at the Olympic Training Center. I think everyone is so used to seeing the polished well mannered Spencer that when he’s more candid than usual or honest it takes people by surprise. I also don’t think people fully get how damn competitive he is. Anytime he falls below his expectations he’s frustrated.

Long story short. Lee’s human, he’s competitive. And no one is completely nice all of the time. I think everyone should turn the page from a situation that has already been resolved.
