Soldier Salute updates - Day 2

A very possible explanation is that one guy wanted to wrestle and refused to forfeit. I am sure insiders will call me a conspiracy theorist.

Parco win was impressive. Kennedy beat 2 legit wrestlers without the outcome being in doubt and Sparks has looked very good this year so nice W for Cali.

3) Entertain the fans who make the sport possible, and who paid good money to attend. If there wasn't an intent to wrestle each guy thru the finals then they both shouldn't have been entered. Period.
I wouldn’t be paying to watch these two knowing it’s even a possibility. My bigger concern is making the best decision for them to finish as high on the NCAA podium times four.

I’m good now…🤣 just talked to him. He even said he needs to work on finishing when people run. Felt good about getting riding time, something that he has been working on. I don’t mind fair criticism. It’s the other BS that shows a lack of knowledge and character 😡.
He's looking really strong on top. Riding isn't the issue. Guy is a stud, don't get me wrong. Total badass.
He acknowledged my point.

a lot of our back ups leave a lot to be desired. 125 is a weak weight for us and we have even less in backups. Same for 133-149. 157 isn’t great but have a couple young guys that could have promise. Nothing at 165. Log jam 174, 184, nothing currently at 197 or HWT for back up. Everyone say your prayers for no more injuries. The transfer portal better be good to us after the season. Hoping like many others since Cardenas didn’t wrestle unattached at midlands this was a recruiting trip.

wrestling isnt a huge fan backed sport, with the exception of recently. Outside of Iowa wrestling happens a lot with very little fan support.

If its better for team culture/health or whatever TnT think than it makes more sense not to wrestle.

As has been said before on here. no one bats an eye when PSU does it or any other school for that matter. In fact people were confused as to why tOSU lets Bouzakis wrestle Davino

I think it’s good to remember that he’s basically a true freshman in a big boy weight and only 2 of the 12 guys ranked ahead of him are coming back next year…
Yes, I'm not bashing Ben in any way. He's a great kid, World age freestyle gold and silver medalist. Crazy accomplishments!
Just saying he needs work finishing.
I'm a big Ben fan!
Kid is incredible and thanks for the reminder he's a true freshman. Easy to forget.

Overall a good showing. We did what we were expected to do. As Ironside noted, we have some things to fine tune, and that's why we have this tourney.

But...

Gable talked about "putting on a show." The reason his guys won OW awards was because they put on a show. Lewis. Davis. Kistler. Alger.

We have some real hammers in our lineup now, but we failed to put on a show. That's why the kid from Navy won OW at our hometown tourney.

The Arnold/Ferrari non-match is on my mind, for sure--that's Brands's failure to put on a show, but that's just part of it. Ironside noted that we coasted in too many matches, and I agree 100%.
Tarp:
Fully agree. There is no sense of urgency in many matches. Our guys seem to get in on shots but take a long time to finish and sometimes waste a lot of time. Guys that finish quick are Parco, Teemer when he shoots, Mikey, Buchanan. PK is getting better at it, Drake is getting quicker about it as well. Arnold showed some more offense this weekend with some good quick finishes. When they can finish quick and often then we get our show. Slow and getting tied up in scrambles becomes boring.

I think some might think it’s bashing when you say he needs major coaching on takedowns or he’ll never be an ncaa champ. Thanks for clarifying.

Life wrestlers don't show up on rankings but taking it to the hawks.. like making us look silly
Different rankings. They are NAIA. Multi-time NAIA champs in fact.
Foeller vs. Life wrestler on the women's side for all the marbles, team score differential is 1.5. And Life wrestler wins 2-1. Life wins the tourney 199-196.5.
They were bad all day on updating scores. It was actually 215.5 -195 going into that match.

For Ben it’s all about size and horsepower. Every time I see him I can’t believe he’s a heavyweight.

Hmmm…what do those guys have in common vs. our other weights?

Spencer being in the room is so obvious. He's taught some of these guys the tilt.
This always cracks me up when I read something like this.

Don’t get me wrong I love Spencer and his freakish strength and timing made him really good at the “Spencer tilt”, but in all seriousness it’s a very common tilt series. I guarantee everyone in the Iowa room knew how to do this, or had the principles of this series in like 8th grade.

It’s funny to me honestly. Spencer is an extremely basic and in some ways old school wrestler, yet his feel and strength made his wrestling looked unique. That’s just how damn good he was at this. He must have had the strength of a middleweight.

Not sure what's up with Ben. Energy looked sapped very early and just looks really sluggish to me. Not remotely what I expected out of a wrestler as accomplished as he was at a young age. Still time to take the next step but he's got a ways to go.
I think you’re being a little harsh on BK. The guy he wrestled in the finals didn’t want to wrestle. He wanted to keep it close and counter and maybe steal it late.

I will say that BK can get better at creating angles to score from. Against less talented wrestlers his athletic ability can win out in a scramble. He’s been the best wrestler on the mat damn near everytime he’s stepped on the mat pre college. Maybe he’s developed a bad habit of shooting straight on and not being able to muscle through for the takedown.

I honestly look at this year as BK’s first year on the mat in college. Last year coming from football. Mat time is extremely valuable for young wrestlers. Weight gain and getting into wrestling shape seemed to be the number one focus last year. This year he’s getting better at the little things. He’s not there yet, but you can see progress. I still think he’s a stud in the making.

Yeah, I really don't have an issue with them not wrestling. All smart coaches do it. The prize is in March and not December. The only times Cael lets two guys wrestle in the finals is if it's a wrestleoff of sorts. So with that being said, I imagine Gabe is wrestling and Ferrari is RS'ing. Otherwise as a coach, you'd want to see Ferrari under the big lights of a final to see his reaction.

You can muscle through takedowns when you are the same weight - when you give up 20-30 pounds it’s pretty tough to do.

Agreed to disagree. BK did nothing but ride to ride the entire 2nd and stalled the entire 3rd period. He should have been warned far earlier than he was.

Shouldn’t all D1 wrestlers know how to do a tilt🤷🏻‍♂️
There's no secret to his tilt. Middle schoolers know how to do it. He's just an alien and nobody can stop him from doing it because he's so strong.

I’m willing to place a small gentlemen’s bet - $ going to HWC - that Angelo goes this year representing the Hawks at NCAAs at 84. I think he’s got the goods to place at least 3rd and will want to give it a go.
I just don’t see the benefit in doing that. If he takes third and Arnold hypothetically would’ve taken 5th, you lose a year of eligibility for Angelo and risk alienating Arnold for like 3 team points. If we had a legitimate shot at the team title, the decision would be tougher for sure.
