Solution(s)?!

I live out of state and I am not a Iowa alumni but I am a die hard Hawkeye wrestling and football fan the story is a long one . The construction idea is great it sounds like great source and would be fun . I will be for now on donating directly to the HWC and will be proud to do so. Im on board for $50 a month or whatever gets me the an updated news letter if it happens . I also suggest tshirt sales maybe every 4months you could have the wrestlers design them or something like that a tshirt club so to speak. Im not sure how legal it would be but I would love to have a collection of wrestler designed tshirts.. I would where them every day. Easy to do online. Just a suggestion I will help any way I can but im not in the area so volunteer is out.

LaxHawk has to have some college friends that would dominate a website and knock out some marketing. If I was a college kid, I'd love to put that I did an internship with HWC and created their website, marketing, etc.

Who was the wrestler a few years ago that was making those awesome posters? He was pretty damn artistic and impressive. Get him involved!

Also loving the theme of this thread and loving some of the ideas. I would absolutely be willing to donate time, labor, tools, equipment, and resources for projects that would benefit the HWC in my area... I will email you soon acuhawk.

Yep. Also, isn't Ben Shirk a photographer and doesn't he possibly do some art work/graphic design stuff? Pretty sure he is still in Iowa as I believe I have seen him at some youth wrestling tournaments this past season.

Yes and yes.

Gobblin, you're the man!

I have a slogan. . . "Roofing for Wrestlers". The project now has an official title. Carry on, gents!

Best thread in the history of the board, IMO. I love seeing Iowa fans stepping up and being counted. Reminds me of the kind of people who inhabit the state (or used to live here, or just love Iowa wrestling). Generally speaking, Iowans are people of action. When a challenge arises, we pull together and find a way to tackle it. Much like the Iowa wrestling program, itself, dating back to the 70's.

Love seeing so many folks volunteering their talents. We may not be stocked with multimillionaires, but we have resources of varying kinds, and when pooled together, we're a force. Keep it up, Hawk fans. Let's get behind the HWC and the Iowa program like never before and give the staff, the wrestlers, and recruits more support than they ever imagined.

I think there will be some exciting news coming down the pike where new developments for the program are concerned. Lots of momentum right now. . . let's keep it going!

I love this thread and hope it (and its purpose) remains here for quite awhile!

My two cents on some things that weren't terribly talked about, unless I missed it:

1.)The HWC website needs MAJOR revamping or overhaul
2.) The merchandise for purchase needs to modernize and offer more a selection
3.) AND, better marketing/advertising.

A solution for these? Maybe hire a student/grad student or two in those specific fields??? Offer them incentives or minimal pay, or nothing at all, idk. But really they would get experience out of it for a future resume??? Quid pro quo
I can't help but think there's an Iowa wrestling fan with web design skills who would love to tackle this project. Why hire it done when we have a massive pool of Iowa fans to step up? It could be one fan's way of donating. Donations come in all shapes and sizes -- not just financial -- as we've seen from the emergence of Roofing for Wrestlers (a.k.a., Headgears and Hardhats).

There are countless other types of projects that could be done to generate funds for the HWC. All we need is some imagination and some determination.

And maybe we'll also come upon some avid Iowa wrestling fans with some serious financial resources who want to pitch in a few million, as well. I wouldn't discount that possibility at all. But let's keep this up! The Iowa wresting fan base could be an ongoing force in its ability to keep churning out funds for the HWC. Imagine that -- a steady and sizable income stream for the HWC provided directly by the efforts of a fan base that's determined to see the Hawks back on top of the wrestling world. It would be virtually unprecedented in its scope. Fires me up just thinking about it!

Go Hawks!

Some good ideas here. Some just throwing stuff up against the wall....etc. Brainstorming is good. Something good can come of it. Not all ideas will work or are practical.

And when I visualize 10-12 ex-wrestlers waltzing around someone's roof, with or without refreshments, ahem, you might want to make sure you get a good Lawyer, Insurance Agent and maybe off duty Medical person to volunteer services and advice. Legal exposure here could be a drawback.

I see way too many possible pitfalls in this type of activity for fundraising for the payoff involved. Could be wrong of course. But you are essentially talking about starting a New business. City, County, State Licenses? Workers Compensation Insurance is expensive.

Is someone here in the advertising field that give some good ideas for fundraising? How about a Calendar with the Wrestlers pictures on it? Maybe a couple pics of the Cheerleaders.....

Ok maybe 12 pics of the Cheerleaders......:)

There should be an easier way to raise funds than something that might involve Government, Insurance and Lawyers.

Good point, Kwood. At this stage, I'd say the more ideas, the better. Specifics and practicality of individual projects can be sorted out as they become considered more seriously.

I like the idea of a t-shirt design contest. winner gets 2 free shirts and season tickets for 2. can be more than 1 winner.

I would love to pay for a tour of the facilities given by a wrestler or coach before or after a meet.

Maybe have a raffle to sit mat side during a meet.

Also the website needs tons of work.

If you don't want to be in the apparel business, that's fine, but get Ironside to create a hwc site as well as his own. everything on the hwc site will give a percentage to the hwc and the rest to Ironside. but I do think the hwc should have its own site for apparel. Even though Ironside could have the same clothes on his own site with the same contribution. Make it clear what part of each purchase goes to the hwc

I also think it would be cool to offer kid wrestling stuff as well as some retro iowa gear.

I know there are several but how about camps being put on by the club members. Gable getting involved with his big money contacts is a must. He did have the Carver family onboard with a trust many years ago.

I'm done, I'm just jumping on the ISU train. Looks like f** from what I've read. The same coaching staff besides Metcalf just shook up the wrestling world. Look out PSU!

Speaking of Jeret, I suspect he'd be willing to get involved in some way that would help the cause. Would also be great for his visibility. The more Iowa wrestling fans are aware of him and his talent, the more will support his business ventures.

How about adding 2 or 3 more coaching clinics for youth during folk? Clinics could be divide by neutral, top, bottom and pinning combination

Follow that up some clinics for freco March/April/May before summer camps kick off

I don't know about the current situation, but an HR poster voluntarily did much of the work on the HWC website a few years ago.

My 2 young boys went to the free clinic before the Wisconsin meet and thought it was awesome. Events like that would be a great opportunity to sell merchandise and collect donations for the HWC. I know I would have gladly contributed in response to a really well-run, free clinic. They reached the 100 kid max capacity within the first hour, so that gives you an idea on the demand and probably willingness to pay for the service.

WWDM, while your Des Moines group is out and about keep in mind the polar plunge. You may come across the right business owner who can raise good funds for plunging.

Novak, now would be a good time to hit up some of the Iowa Senate. They must have several wrestling fans among them. Politicians love positive publicity. A group of Senators may be willing to do the polar plunge. It's worth the price of the phone call. The publicity would be outstanding.

Chief, hit me up with an email so we can begin to get our Eastern Iowa group numbers up. I don't like Des Moines having more volunteers than the Iowa City/CR/Quad Cities.

But we already have a local presence here in the IC/CR area. The HWC board. Which is "probably" who the people who want to get involved should be aligning with. Have asked the board which they would prefer; a seperate satellite club or volunteers helping and promoting new fund raising events through the existing entity.

Talked with Randy who said sure set one up. We can help support and volunteer at the current fund raising events, increase awareness through out the area, as well as provide new fresh ideas and help get them accomplished.
