We know Carson May, Iowa's backup QB for December's bowl game, entered the portal but was relegated to JUCO ball at Coffeyville Community College. Similarly, Alex Padilla likely had to walk-on at SMU to land on a roster similar to Deuce Hogan. But what about the Hawks who announced they were entering the portal 4 or 5 months ago but still have not found a home? Could they be left without a team and the free tuition/room/board and NIL money that comes with it? It's starting to look like it.
As of today, May 19th, with the semester ending and summer workouts beginning, the following former Hawks appear to be homeless:
Isaiah Bruce - entered the portal on Jan 11, before the spring semester. He was a 3 star guy with offers from Iowa State and Northwestern before picking Iowa in the class of 2020. He only had 1 career tackle in 3 years at Iowa, but since he comes from Illinois, you'd think at the very least an Illinois directional school would pick him up.
Elijah Yelverton - entered the portal on December 9, before Iowa's bowl game. Announced his transfer to Colorado right around the time they hired Dion Sanders. The team then faced an exodos of 46 scholarship players, most of whom were shown the door. Was Yelverton caught up in that? I'm not certain, but Draft Kings "full list of Colorado's incoming transfer portal recruits" doesn't show Yelverton on it as of 4/26/23, though another transfer tight end is listed. Yelverton was one of Iowa's highest rated recruits in the 2020 class. He turned down offers from over 50 schools, including Michigan, Oregon, Auburn, LSU, Florida, etc. If he doesn't stick at Colorado, you'd think he'd have no problem landing at a Top 25 program by now.
Justin Britt - entered the portal in March. Started getting playing time way back in 2019 and started several games in 2021 before getting injured in 2022. Kirk Ferentz flubbed at his Feb press conference and said Britt had decided to medically retire rather than play the 2023 season. This came as a shock to Britt, who then had to take to Twitter to announce that he had not retired and instead would be entering the transfer portal immediately. Highly touted kid from the class of 2019 and he's been in the system for ages, presumably getting bigger and stronger. He had offers from Purdue, Michigan State, and those caliber schools. You'd think there are plenty of schools out there in need of a 6'5, 300lb OL with years of Big 10 playing experience.
