I just looked up his bio --- he's 27, won gold at World's last year, and silver at 2016 Olympics. If someone from a foreign country were to enroll at Iowa, would they be eligible to compete, even at his age? I imagine that the NCAA has rules regarding this.

I would love to see SL win multiple Sr-Level World and Olympic titles. Freestyle will be a much more difficult test for his knees than college folk. In college, if SL could get a good grip on you from neutral, that match was just about over. One takedown, and a quick pin, or 1-2 period's worth of riding and turns=done. Free forces you to use mobility, power and quickness on your feet for almost the whole match...

In freestyle you can hit a TD and leg lace them over and over for a tech seconds into the match.

Folk style is much more brutal on your body.

My oldest son was just at the Hawkeye Wrestling Camp in June. He said Spencer was there, but that Spencer really only worked with little youngins. He was disappointed about that, but I told him they are probably handling Spencer with kid gloves for the near future.

Restored respect for Spencer after watching his Clash of Combat interview (worth the hour). Though owed to no one, it’s admirable he gave explanations for the NCAA/Open withdrawals, owned and delivered like a man. Glad to admit my personal take was wrong, and back to rooting for him as strongly as I did when tracking his HS career from the town next door. The CoC guys do a nice job drawing out a wrestler’s “human” side that fans don’t always get to see. It’s now up to the wrestling gods to favor Lee with as much health as possible in a body hellbent on betraying him. Even at 90%, I’d still bet he can win Olympic or world gold. And though likely not around to see it, I’d also bet he makes a refreshingly different but equally successful head coach at his beloved Iowa.

NCAA certification requirements (ECAG Operating Procedures) do not have any age restrictions. Generally, until an athlete is fully enrolled at an NCAA institution, they are still considered a prospect.

Great interview, thanks for sharing it. One interesting tidbit was that the contract Rudis has with Spencer (and other wrestlers it seems) only lets you get a shoe line if you win Olympic gold. Oly silver/bronze and world medals are not good enough.
