Spencer Lee will medically forfeit from the wrestle back round

This right here is the best response in this entire thread. It’s a bad look. True character shows when faced with adversity.

I really hope he didn’t just leave, that would be even worse than the MFF, which if anyone looking at it without the black & gold glasses on, would understand how bad of a look this is if he isn’t actually physically injured.
Are you living in a time warp? Spencer is there he went on the podium.

Good thing he’s showed an enormous amount of character the last 6yrs with all the adversity he’s faced. Holy shit. Is there a wrestler that’s faced as much adversity as him and accomplished even half of what he has?

Spencer's loss last night hurt me more than any sporting defeat that I can remember. In any sport. I truly hurt for him. And I hope that amongst the sadness, disappointment and bitter hatred for losing that he surely is feeling, he doesn't feel like he let his fans, his coaches or his teammates down. It was a gift watching him wrestle so brilliantly at Iowa and I hope he spends the rest of his life here. Ideally, as Tom's successor.
Worst I have felt for an individual was last night. The worst I have felt after a sporting event - I am a diehard Viking fan the 98 championship game almost killed me.

I respectfully disagree. Most of us have never wanted anything as badly as Spencer wanted that 4th title and, for that, we should consider ourselves lucky. Even for somebody as mentally strong as he is, this has to be absolutely crushing. Wrestling has been his whole life and nobody should question the choices he makes or the things he does and doesn't do from here on out.
Maybe Tom Petty, of all people said it best: "God, it's so painful when something that is so close. Is still so far out of reach."
Agree on the the rest, but especially the Petty reference. I had the good fortune to see him live in Des Moines just a few months before he passed. Amazing show. That line from American Girl gets me every time.

I don’t think the MFF is a big deal. Would feel differently if 2nd place was in peril. If it were maybe he would have gone anyway. He needs to be on the stand and team photos IMO from a PR perspective.
Iowa beat Cornell by six points. Cardenas took 8th place for 1 point; had he gone on a tear he could have taken fourth and pushed Iowa to third place.

I didn't see the part where Spencer made any excuses. He withdrew from the tournament for medical reasons. That isn't an excuse for anything, it is an explanation. An excuse would have been him claiming he would have won his 4th if he wasn't injured. He didn't say that at all.

Weird thing though.....everyone knows he would have won his 4th if he wasn't injured.

If he took 8th, that means he lost after the blood round Friday night. The best he could have got was 7th at that point. He couldn’t have gone on a tear Saturday morning.

I'm pretty sure it was Warner that beat him too.

You are correct. I'm sure that Spencer and the coaches ran all the math scenarios to know that Iowa could not be caught.

Are you saying you don’t think the coaches would know that information? I could go to Penn State’s wrestling club site and find the same information in 2 seconds. I guarantee the Iowa coaches would have known the same.

Cornell wrestled five matches on Saturday. What's the max bonus they could have had? Unlikely, but still possible. To say they had second "safely" is a bit of a stretch (but maybe not as much of a stretch as getting so much bonus from Cornell).

I was saying this right after our championship in 2021. Spencer should have immediately had both ACL’s repaired right after he won it all with two torn ACL’s. He could have had a medical redshirt the next season and had over a year and a half to recover.

Instead he tried to wrestle the next season and didn’t end up having the surgeries until almost a full year later.

I get wanting to be tough and thinking you can just rehab, but it really would have been wise to fix them right away and have more time to heal up for this final season.

This. I think it’s also clear now he should have waited until January to wrestle, and should have wrestled just enough to be eligible for NCAAs and shake the cobwebs off.

This is just so sad.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Yes but I agree after not going at the Trials he should’ve just had the surgery. Who knows what happened this year, his left leg seems to be the issue as it was when he wasn’t able to train.

Victim of circumstance, life is just unfair sometimes. Absolutely crushed for him, anything short of winning a gold won’t change that. Been watching wrestling for 30 plus years and he’s the best I’ve seen.

This is what a losing argument looks like. I respect the fight but I’d throw in the white towel on this one bud.

Denny Green was hard headed. I will never forget him leaving a defensive back on the field with a hammy hopping around on one leg trying to defend Falcon receivers. He could have put a 310# lineman in to replace and would have done better. Handed that game to the dirty birds on a platter. But yeah, Spencer losing there was worse for me.

I was, but we’re headed for Florida in 2 weeks. Couldn’t swing both. And their not insiders.. Just family of athletes, donors, and ex Hawkeyes. Anymore “gotcha” attempts?
Come on down to the land of the free Gobblin.
Weather has been beautiful except for the last few days. Little chilly, but we will be back to 80 by Wednesday. 😀

His argument doesn’t make any sense
Sonnen has always been a blowhard. I didn't listen to the video but assume it's filled with diarrhea of the mouth. It also puts a little perspective on optional starts angle towards the HWC. Spencer lost so it was time for him to focus on the next best thing. That happens to be a World title. He risked a lot every time he wrestled because that's the type of person he is. He doesn't owe the outside haters or the histrionics on here anything.

Spot on.

My only issue with this is that if Spencer is hurt and plans to wrestle internationally why on earth would he risk further injury to wrestle on the backside for 3rd in order to show he is a team leader. That’s just silly.
I’m not sure we will see him wrestle again. He couldn’t plant his feet, couldn’t put forward pressure on. Looked like his finals match against Virginia, forget his name. Either way, Spencer is a damn stud and he’s been an amazing wrestler for the program.

Yeah, that’s some grade A BS right there. If Spencer is a quitter in that dude’s book, his book must be filled with gibberish. Yikes — just when you think football and basketball fans couldn’t get any dumber, they raise the bar even more.🤦🏻‍♂️
But you do gotta show up. Not wrestling day 3 after losing isn’t right (unless there was a new medical issue that occurred during the semifinal match or overnight between day 2 and day 3). Otherwise, he was healthy enough to wrestle Day 2, so why not Day 3? If the only thing that changed is that he was now in the consis, then he should have been out there Day 3. Plain and simple. To say otherwise is just blowing smoke and excuse-making.

I’m honestly surprised people think otherwise. Like why? You know it’s wrong to forfeit out unless you physically can’t wrestle. Everyone knows that. Sure, it’s nothing new and people do it, but that doesn’t make it right. Quit trying to polish a turd.

If there was a new medical issue that prevented him wrestling day 3, that’s different.
