Spencer Lee...

Can we just get back to Lee's wrestling...the board looks foolish. Bottom line I think/believe the Brands bros are the best situation. Am I biased...YES. But Brands bros have created some studs at the lower weights. Not just one or two but numerous studs including themselves. Settle down HawkLand.

Ihawk9times, do me a favor and take your keyboard and slap yourself in the face. That is unless you are Spencer Lee's girlfriend's sister and have inside info. Your claims of being certain that Lee and his GF will not break up, and them not being a normal couple shows how idiotic your post are. Lee is 16 years old.
Please also realize that at age 16 and 110 pounds he's got plenty of time to grow but labeling him the best prospect on the planet ever is silly. He crushed 110 pound juniors but also didn't make the 126 pound Cadet team a couple months ago.

Don't disagree with the part on gf/sister not going to comment on that, but he missed the 119 pound cadet squad, not 126.

I gave up on recruiting back when Destin McCauley verbaled to Wisconsin.

I like Lee as much as the next Iowa fan but some of you all (ahem, IHAWK) are posting some far out ish. The off season and recruiting season does some funny things to you bruh.

Two observations: 1) Seems premature to me to project Lee as a 125 pounder or any other weight class in college. He's a 16 year old who has not yet started his junior year of high school. David Taylor at the same age was wrestling 112 IIRC. Same for Mejia and Renteria; who knows where those kids will end up weight/size-wise? There are many examples of kids who put on 30/40 pounds between their high school junior year and their first year of college. For an extreme example, look at Zahid Valencia last summer. 2) Why would Lee commit anywhere this year? No scholarship offers are going to dry up, and why wouldn't he take a year to figure out the landscape and the best fit for his weight, team, coaches, etc? TnT, Cael, Ryan, Manning, and others will not lose interest. Not that I haven't enjoyed the posts on this topic, but I think all fans -- not just Iowa -- are getting amped up for a decision that is more than 365 days away. Sit back and enjoy the kid's wrestling.

My take on that: as you mentioned those are extreme examples. For instance Zahid's brother was fairly big as well so it wasn't that crazy he grew in the end, what was crazy was the weight jumps. Also, some of the projections can be off his family size. If his parents aren't big people, it would be strange if their kid ends up with a vastly different body type.

Second, Lee deserves a full ride no matter where he goes. In a sense it doesn't matter if he waits, everyone should be throwing a full ride so if he already knows where he is going to end up there is no use dragging coaches from other programs who are holding out on others who are their back up plan.

Rationale for committing early is because you know with 100% certainty where you want to go and you want to give a clear signal to the program to help them re-prioritize their needs and to "mark your territory." We don't know with certainty where anyone will end up weight-wise, but it's helpful to the program to know that we'll have Mejia and Renteria among the lighter weights, and Marinelli probably at 165. If you've got Marinelli you don't need Racer; if you've got Kemerer you don't need Stroker; if you've got Tom Brands you don't need Alan Fried, etc. It helps put the bricks in place.

This tells me that Lee doesn't yet know with 100% certainty where he wants to go.

Wait!...what? His GF has a sister? Is she also just randomly going to attend Iowa too? That family must just love paying out of state tuition for no reason at all. Just doesn't make any sense why they would do that. Must have just thrown a dart at a map and picked a school.

Spencer will commit when he is ready. Sure he could commit now but is better just to live your life in that state letting folks hear what they want to hear and think PSU is in the cards then to be hounded about going to Iowa. Could you imagine how old" why Iowa" would get? Plus Brands is a bit coy. He didn't want Gilman to announce until real late because of OK ST and Clark took his sweet time as well even though it was going to happen (cough, cough Happel). Sometimes its better to keep the other programs a bit handcuffed.

Now lets talk about landing that Keegan Moore can we?

everything you say makes sense, but I can't tell if you know it or are making some assumptions that seem right. I hope what you say are correct or some of the wolves on here are going to go bonkers.i would love to have lee on board. he hasn't even started his jr. year I encourage him to enjoy this time of his life,it goes by fast and is gone forever. iowa wrestling will thrive with or without him it is that strong,if spencer wants to be part of it great.

Wow, with all of the talk about Lee, I would have bet a $1mm dollars that he is a senior to be. I did not realize that he is just going to be a HS Jr. He sounds like a phenomenal prospect...but there are seriously some adults that need to get a life if we are hyperventilating about where a HS wrestler is going to matriculate...2 years from now.

I may be alone here, but can we stop with the "Wow, some adults here need to relax.... etc" ... I find nothing wrong with most of this recruiting talk. Its called being a passionate wrestling fan, and it makes for interesting discussion with all the random tidbits of Lee's girlfriend and so on.

Okay i get it, you're not that excited about recruiting... this recruit.. or whatever it is. Maybe it is 'going too far' but I appreciate any tiny parcel of any information even SOMEWHAT related to wrestling or recruiting during the dreary lull that is the off season. And it just so happens that Lee is a SuperMega recruit the likes we haven't seen since Metcalf, it also just so happens we might have a fairly good shot at landing him. So excuse some folks for getting excited about it, I for one know that I refresh these forums a lot during recruiting season... some people have the most selective 'thin skin' I have ever seen when it comes to the online wrestling community.. Lol. Not just here, all over the PSU board, and the mat as well. I just pray that we don't have to live through too much longer of their 'new money, amalone-esque' cockiness and god willing steal a title from them sometime in the next decade...:rolleyes:

Couple fun tidbits from the interview I posted. Lee is a big time hunter and likes archery. The guy giving the interview said "we need to hook you up with Metcalf." Spencer didn't bite on the offer though. Also Herbert tweeted a question asking if Hall and Lee would commit to the same place and become the next Taylor and Ruth. Interesting discussion but Lee said he doesn't know what Hall is going to do.

Don't think it's the excitement about recruiting LAX...it's the discussion of the upcoming nuptials of young Mr. Lee and his bride to be that pegged my weird meter.

Marriage would be a safer bet down the road. Same for Marinelli. These aren't your average kids mentally and not your average teenage couples.

IDK, I didn't think it was that weird or far out, most posters afterwards acted like he was saying they're getting married soon, but the way I took it was that from his outside perspective they seem to be a mature couple and different than most teen couples. Through high school, which was not that long ago for me.. I saw plenty of quick relationships, but I also saw some that everyone knew were going to stick and they still have stuck years later, and I think that is what he is getting at.. one of my best friends sister is a good example of this, she's dated the same person since 8th grade and are getting married this winter after about 9-10 years together.

I don't claim to be an insider or anything but I'm pretty sure Spencer has been dating his current girlfriend since he was at least an 8th grader and don't appear to be breaking up anytime soon...

Sorry, didn't mean to get off on a tangent like I always do, just showing how I see things from my 'young gun' perspective.

Spencer "The Natural" Lee just has to be Black and Gold with that style. He's TnT part III. Not going to happen though. I stay pessimistic, it's easier on me.

It's sad my four boys and I have been checking this board for the good news every 15 minutes for the last month...pathetic.

I'm losing them to the Panther Train. They're trained by Bonin and Lazor, I need to get them back.

Pa deer look like rabbits compared to Iowa deer. Looks like Iowa has the advantage in coaching, workout partners, fan base, and hunting. Seems like an easy choice to me.

Got done with the interview and here are my takeaways:

1) Humble, polite, and just seems like a great kid. Hat off to the 'Rents.
2) Hardcore love for wrestling. This is important because some kids that are even next level kids may have been pushed along by their parents. A guy like Spencer will be grounded and self-motivated. This will not be one that will fall to the beer in the off season...although there might be an archery citation or something (keeping with tradition)
3)He will not be making his college choice soon. You could tell he has been thinking about it but Jr. Worlds has been his whole summer. Look to #1 on the list...his parents are probably going to make damn sure Spencer looks at all of his options. So sorry Iowa and PSU fans but this is a kid that is still weighing his options and seems pretty final that he won't announce until next year.
4)He could name all of his losses without hesitation (not that there are many).
5)He was very careful not to tip his hand. Very astute when Immel asked him about his mentors and brought up Nico. He basically said its always great when a Nico comes back and hangs out but he has so many mentors etc etc
6)His goal is to make the Olympics; Yea, most next level guys say that but this kid breaths it. There might be more talented guys out there but I don't know if there are more driven ones at his age level.

Great interview.

Lenox, it's hard to argue that Iowa doesn't have the advantage in the deer hunting arena. At least the ones that have learned to look both ways before crossing the street. No question, PA has the advantage in the road kill department. Driving the roads in Western PA during rutting season helps build character in these young PA wrestlers.

Archery season runs same time as wrestling. If he were to come to Iowa a guy like me could put him on some record book whitetail bucks. I would also hook Hall up. Those guys gotta come to Iowa though. Seriously.

And also mentioned McKenna being a close workout partner. McKenna was just in Iowa city bragging about how great it was to work with Terry and the vibe/intensity was something he hadn't seen.

Also thanks LAX, I cant believe how bad you are twisting that marriage comment. It was intended at PSU fans who know about his GF and have commented on HS kids break up all the time. My point was this isn't some "crush" for 3 months and he is with a new girl. She is coming to Iowa city. Safe to say if your were to bet, betting on marriage is a safer bet than Breaking up. If they were going to break up then why even attend Iowa for her?

Who knows if they will get married. Just saying for to come to iowa a year ealry is more serious than just randon JR high dating like PSU fan downplays it. But stop acting like I am all for small children getting married!!!

This kid is too big of a stud to hunt deer, so that's a moot point

He's looking for a school close to someplace you can hunt bears with just a knife. Or free dive to hunt great white sharks with a harpoon gun.

Sounds like Stanford or Cornell to me.

Didn't Jay Borschel do all of these things while at Iowa? ;)
