Spencer

I’ve never seen him look nervous like he did before the match. Glad he was able to gut out a full match in a big rivalry.
I thought the same then recalled seeing it before his finals matches a time or two. I think it's just how he looks before matches when he's extra amped.

It was shocking to see him go today IMO. The more lung blowouts he can get in the next 4 months the better.
In a controlled environment, I would agree. But there is a line of thinking that there is a greater chance of injury when operating fatigued. Lung blowouts outside the room could be riskier than within.

I didn’t see him call him back, but I wasn’t looking for it, either. I just remember thinking at the time “Geez, Tom, give the kid some space — you’re going to wig him out.”

I know, some guys may like that. I always wanted space and time for myself, though . . . thus my reaction.
I liked space too, but these guys are also creatures of habit. I don't recall ever seeing them prep without the pep talk and rub downs. Massages?
Idk what you call it. Then again I sucked and wasn't good enough for that treatment.

You could tell Lee was tense though and probably needed it.

i'm not concerned about his lungs. if i was concerned about anything it was that he didn't look like he had any pop in his legs, even from the opening whistle. might take him some time to rebuild that strength and it was a big part of his game.

but overall, it wasn't shocking. i'm sure he was really nervous. just needs some more time.

He stated in a video doesn’t cut much and walks around year around only a few pounds over 125. Pretty strict diet just cuz.
historically yes, but people have said he looks bigger in the upper body this year. he's been posting a lot of weight room videos. i wouldn't be surprised if he's a little bigger than he was.

You nailed it. No pop in his legs he hasn't been able to use in close to a year.
When normal guys are running, he's doing pull-ups instead.

Monday morning when he gets out bed will answer some questions regarding how his knees feel. Recovery time is going to be important all year.

regulating nerves is almost as important as your actual shape.
Right, but the point I was trying to make is that when you’re fatigued, you’re fatigued . . . and there is a line of thinking that injury risk increases when you get to that point . . . and your room partner is less likely to be cutthroat or play dirty knowing the circumstances.

I hope the best for the kid being from PA, but that didn't look normal at all against a kid who would struggle to compete at the D3 level. Having cut weight a ton in my life, I can tell you his face looked different from his normal appearance and there was a real lack of intensity and forward motion from him. I think he believed he could take the kid down immediately being a back up and tilt him a few times until it was over. That didn't materialize and it was rough the rest of the way. Hopefully he heals and gets his legs under him because that won't cut it against the best 125 lb kids even though the weight isn't deep and short of a ton of top end talent. It's really sad his body won't cooperate at this point.

He wasn’t wrestling a back up. That’s their starter and he’s a ranked wrestler…

Good news is Spencer didnt have any large knee brace. Bad news is he didn't have any explosiveness on his shots and he gassed after 2 minutes. All against a 3rd string 125lber. He has a long way to go till he can compete with Glory and co
Glory hasn't wrestled since he beat the Rutgers back-up by one earlier this year... His team has forfeited the last three duals..due to his forfeits. Also, the guy that wrestled for ISU tonight has lost four wrestle-off matches against the starter by scores of 2-1, 2-1, 3-1 and 3-1 and the starter did beat a guy ranked 6th in the nation.... ISU actually has some depth at 125.

What confirmed (in my mind) that he was nervous was Tom being all over him before taking the mat. Tried to walk away, then came right back to rub him down. One or both of those guys were anxious.

It might also partially explain Lee’s running out of gas so early. Anxiety can really be a drain.
Running out of gas is easy to explain... Lee is 11 months post double knee surgery. 11 months post one knee surgery is a pretty good timeline to get back on the mat and Lee had both knees done. I don't know if anyone has come back and wrestled after double knee surgery and in 11 months. The bottom line is he needs practice time. I was encouraged by his performance this evening and it appears to me that by Big 10 we will see Lee wrestling the best he's wrestled since his Freshman NCAA run. He went this evening because we needed him and he stepped up.

This match was great for Spencer. There is no way to simulate big time matches. ISU is a big time match for the Hawks. Spencer won convincingly, sealed the dual for us, came out of the match healthy and showed that his top game is still deadly. When he has his lungs back there is no chance guys like that make it out of the first period. For all the mental health and body language experts on this forum; no crap Spencer looked overly excited/nervous. He was toeing the line in a live match for the first time after undergoing double ACL surgery. It has been a long road to recovery and he wouldn't be human if he was not over excited.

I don’t think anyone was criticizing him, but ok.

Spencer is one of the best to ever do it. Period. But it appears that he does have something (anxiety, pressure, etc) holding him back. And yesterday wasn't the first time we have seen it. It has happened every year he has competed. Hats off to him for still being great!!

I sure hope he is OK. He didn't blink for a long time near the end of that match . . . pretty wide eyed. We all know how Spencer is . . . he can blow a knee, and you don't know it until after the match.

I'm looking forward to a good report! And one way or another, he'll have his energy for the big party.

This board has a very impressive number of body language experts contributing. I had no idea we were privy to such expertise. (Hint: Ya’ll don’t know crap.)
You're trying far too hard recently, you really should just let it come out naturally.

Love watching Spencer wrestle, on of my all time favorites! Can't wait for his confidence and gas tank to return

Guessing at least 3, potentially 4 acl tears would create was anxiety in anyone. Natural brain and body response is what I saw.
I've torn my knee up twice and if I even tweak it a little getting up too fast I get the hot sweats! ;)

I’d be worried after 11 months of 2 acl surgeries to just walk around, and here’s this kid going out and dominating in the most physical sport at the highest level. Of course I’m sure it was in the back of his mind. The Lee has been freed again!

Lee appeared completely 'dry' at match end. Virtually no perspiration/moisture on torso.

Some common indicators of dehydration: fatigue; concentration/intense focus impaired; reaction time diminished/reduced.

At match-end, Lee's facial expression seemed a blank, distant stare. A complete absence of emotion. Not typical.

Replies like this make me wonder how much wrestling some posting on this forum actually understand... A few points. You refer to the back up as struggling to compete at DIII. Idiotic post and that comment shows that you don't know wrestling: Corey Cabanban beat Teske last year -- the current Iowa starter at DI Iowa. OMG, he must be a damn good DIII guy. He lost to the starter at Iowa State who upset the 6th ranked guy in the country earlier this year 3-1...OMG, he must be a REALLY good DIII guy let alone someone that would struggle to complete. SeamusGQuaker, you write this as if we should be surprised and your comment about "it's really sad his body won't cooperate at this point" My neighbor is a physical therapist and I showed him your post and he commented " that is a stupid and illiterate comment, and I would say it might be the most idiotic statement I have read on this board EVER and that is saying a lot! Let me get this right, you think a wrestler 11 months removed from a double knee surgery should be 100% and it's "sad" that he's not. Are you kidding me. What an idiotic post. It's a 11-to-12-month process for total recovery from one ACL surgery let alone two knees done at the same time. Do you think it's easier to rehab one knee or two at the same time? He came back early to help the team. First time in Carver since 2020, first time making scratch weight in a year.... My guess will be that Lee will focus on training now for a few weeks to get his legs and lungs back. Of course, it's a building process and I bet by January you will see dramatic improvement and by February he will be all the way back. I was impressed that he scored the last takedown and ensured a major in a dual that bonus points were going to matter. It's really sad that developed minds won't cooperate to allow for intelligent posts.
