Spencer

I think the guy you’re responding to wrestled D1.
Like BIG12 D1 or B1G D1? Asking for a friend.

<<I’ve never seen him look nervous like he did before the match. Glad he was able to gut out a full match in a big rivalry.>>

I dont think he was any more nervous then he has ever been-- he just hasnt been live wrestling--so some emotion, some concern --heck maybe some doubt on his knees. We have seen him tired early in the season before--not a new feeling. He will slowly get into form, get into shape and no doubt he will be the ultimate "Saturday Nighter" of Iowa wrestling.

I hope the best for the kid being from PA, but that didn't look normal at all against a kid who would struggle to compete at the D3 level. Having cut weight a ton in my life, I can tell you his face looked different from his normal appearance and there was a real lack of intensity and forward motion from him. I think he believed he could take the kid down immediately being a back up and tilt him a few times until it was over. That didn't materialize and it was rough the rest of the way. Hopefully he heals and gets his legs under him because that won't cut it against the best 125 lb kids even though the weight isn't deep and short of a ton of top end talent. It's really sad his body won't cooperate at this point.
That kid would be a D3 favorite. He is a good wrestler and only a smidge behind their starter. He beat Teske last year

In a controlled environment, I would agree. But there is a line of thinking that there is a greater chance of injury when operating fatigued. Lung blowouts outside the room could be riskier than within.
More lung blowouts are definitely NOT good: See "Alton, Andrew"

Yeah, I didn’t like the look in his eyes while waiting.
I was thinking the same thing. But then how often is a camera focused on a guy's face for 5 minutes prior to the match?

Also I was surprised he wasn't wearing any knee brace. Against guys that are better at attacking the legs, knee brace(s) might still be recommended, but of course, that's the call of Spencer, and his coach and doctor.

Anyway, it was great to see Lee back, and it lets him know where he's at, with time to work on conditioning and anything else needed. It also allowed Iowa to win the dual.

I’m totally delighted with his match. Did what he needed to do. Very happy for him.
I agree. First match back. Sure he was totally gassed but Spencer will be fine. Obviously not the best version but He’s a champion. Not worried about him at all going forward

Big psychological hurdle coming off two ACL surguries. There is alway that concern early on of a reinjury so it's hard to trust certain movements. Combine that with the inability to train properly and it's easy to see why Spencer looked like he did. I think he needs some matches to regain his confidence in what he can do physically. Sitting out until BigTen Championships would have been a big mistake.

He stated in a video doesn’t cut much and walks around year around only a few pounds over 125. Pretty strict diet just cuz.

In the one video, the interviewer was asking about his diet and his favorite "cheat meal". He said it's a Calzone, he only has it like once a year! 0_O wtf lol. Are calzones supposed to be considered cheat meals? I'm in trouble.

Who would have thought a big glob of dough, meat, cheese and sauce could be high in calories! Lol!

Last time I saw Spencer that uneasy during a match he was up 3-0 heading into the 3rd against Austin Desanto.... And sucking wind as well. Then, he couldn't really train properly for weeks leading into the state tourney which was probably the case now. I'm like some of the others, I'd be most concerned about his knees holding up. If they do, I'm sure he will find a way to get his lungs well enough to remain competive in the 3rd against even the best at the weight.
