Spencer

Covid is still wreaking havoc even 3 years later. Without that, Spencer wins his 4 titles in 4 seasons. Instead he has to endure a season recovering from surgery and another attempt in year 6. All we needed to do was make it a couple more weeks before the shutdown, and it's not even a discussion. 4 years in and out, instead just heartbreak tonight. Just a sick feeling!

Yep. I truly believe if not for COVID he would already be a 4x champ and Olympic gold medalist. At this point he would be rehabbing and training for 2024.

It was pretty obvious that he was not going to compete again after the disaster last night. Someone said it somewhere, but he looked really bad in the interview after the quarters. There has also been a lot of speculation that he has hardly practiced live over the last two weeks. He gassed hard in the quarters and was basically toast in the third period against Ramos.

Thank you for a great career Spencer. It was a pleasure watching you represent Iowa.

So he missed his chance to be the undisputed greatest Hawkeye wrestler of all time. He'll remain one of the few that are in the debate. So who's the greatest? Spencer? Tom Brands? Mark Ironside? Lincoln McIlravy? Joe Williams?

Oh booo freaking hooo. So he lost and doesn’t become a 4 timer. Guess his move to Iowa really changed him. The PA kid would fight back for third place, help his team get second place.and not just give up. Now all you Iowa quitters can start making excuses for him. Just remember, excuses are for wusses.
And English is for educated people, zero.

Beyond stupid... thank goodness SLee and all other Hawks don't share your weak state of mind.
Hey dumbass, please don't take a momentary lapse as a weak state of mind. It can happen to anyone even someone as unbreakable as you. I'm going to take your post as a weak - and stupid - moment on your part, otherwise I'd start thinking of ways to introduce you to how weak "your" mind can actually become...

@Nashville_Hawkeye , props to you for admitting an emotional mistake in your post last night. My 2 cents: just ignore anybody that can't move on from it after you owned it.

Actually, Cornell could (but won't, of course), get 19 more points (two 1sts with pins, a 3rd with a pin, and a 7th with a pin)...
Yeah, he was more or less saying it was a foregone conclusion simply because Spencer wasn’t wrestling.

Did anyone else accomplish what he did with devastating knee injuries from day one?? Probably not, so that alone puts him at the top. I believe it is supposed to take about 18 months to recover from a double ACL surgery, just doing rehab that entire time, and he was back competing before mid season. No one else coming back from that and minimal mat time since 2021 would have had such high expectations on him to be a national champion again this year. We need to get realistic, he is human.

I am thankful I got to watch Spencer wrestle in an Iowa singlet for 4 years, and for his incredibly entertaining style, and for his 3 individual titles, and for the team's title (also favorites to win another one), and for his relationship with DeSanto, which supposedly brought Austin to Iowa City.
Spencer owes me nothing. TnT owe me nothing.

Strong group of 2 time champs — agree with Randy Lewis, then would add Brent Metcalf, Chris Campbell, Chuck Yagka, and Mark Ironside.

I’m partial to the 1970s guys. Attended my first Iowa meet in 1974, a 19-19 tie with Iowa State.

Edit — agree that I left off Barry Davis. Lucky Dan Gable found him at HyVee.
Barry had donuts and gallon of whole milk in hand!

Very well said

If you paid close attention to his wrestling this season, it was evident that Spencer was unable to condition and train like he needed to in order to cut weight and build up endurance. His mission was to end every match in the 1st period because he knew he didn't have the lungs and would fade in the 3rd. There wasn't a pop or spring in his legs like he needed. Hell, just look at his attempt at a mat return against Ramos Friday night. He did not get the lift or explosion he needed and Ramos rolled through on him. A healthy Spencer plants Ramos back on the mat and would keep him down with forward pressure and wrist control.

What Lee accomplished with a failing lower half of his body is incredible. It breaks my heart and really crushed me watching it live. I couldn't believe what had just happened. I cannot imagine the anguish he is experiencing and I refuse to judge him and the decision to medically forfeit.

I will be sad in November watching someone else toe the line at 125 for the Hawks... He is an all timer. Thank you Spencer, now go get that Gold Medal.

After reading some of the negative replies about spencer on this tweet and other places it boggles my mind the lack of understanding so many people have.

Reminds me of the George Carlin quote about thinking how dumb the average person is and then realize that half the population is even more stupid.

Those boys didn't use an illegal arm-bar ( yes, that's right) which p*s*y refs let go. the pressure up the shoulder blade is real. If that penalty or potential dangerous is called, Spencer loses several more matches over time.

Hard to imagine how Spencer used that illegal and dangerous bar hundreds of times over his career, yet nobody was ever injured. Some luck, huh?

Guys, Now that I'm in a calmer place I take that back. He needs to finish what he started and God I hope he stays in Iowa City. Just not sure how a blow like this to a kid of his caliber is going to affect him. Clearly for Dan Gable it fired him up and took him to a gold and to coach to places nobody had seen. Damn I hate it for SL!!
Well I am pretty sure Terry Brands has a little story about losing his team spot at the World team trials right before the Olympics. He has a good support base he will get through this!

Didn’t coaches (and maybe Tom) have to chase after him because he ran out of the arena?

Bunch of homers here reacting. You know that there was immense pressure from the corner NOT to call it.

Mason Parris showed how to use it legally, didn't he?

By the way, hire Spencer as a staff coach. He would be inspirational if not an excellent technician. I will say he's a tough little animal.

You got this bit from askren. Who hasn’t wrestled collegiately in 15 years, and clearly doesn’t know what’s legal or illegal better than the refs paid to know. But I bet you’re a fan of how rby was defending against McGee (and desanto). Reminded me of glory in a couple matches throughout his career. Some guys will try to injure you if you get to their legs. Next time come back with something original, cupcake.

According to that Flo documentary at least, yes, Tom and gable reportedly had to grab him and pull him down from a chain link fence he was trying to climb. I believe Tom said something the the effect that if Terry had gotten over it he's not sure he'd have ever seen his brother again and he likely would have just run off and disappeared
