Football players often look for motivation in perceived slights during the week leading up to bowl games. For Stanford Outland Trophy winner and future number one NFL pick Josh Garnett, it was a declaration by Iowa cornerback Desmond King, who said he was going to "pancake" Garnett and Stanford is' no big deal'.

There were also comments from other Hawkeyes who said they hadn't heard of McCaffrey until the Heisman Trophy show and that Stanford's offensive line wasn't in the same league as theirs.

"Think they know who McCaffrey is now," Garnett said as he laughed. "They said their Oline and Dline was so good. But yet our D sacked them what ten times and we ( Stanford offensive line ) just ran over them. When you challenge guys like us, you better back it up and they didn't even come close . . . we're the wrong guys to do that to as they found out.

"We showed them what Stanford football is all about. Once the whistle blows, there's nowhere to hide on the field and they found that out too. Our coaches said they had some major weaknesses and if we just executed we would score a lot, they were right. It was easy, way easy "

So, if Stanford is so "all world" why/how did they lose to N'Western and Oregon?

I never heard of him until heismen talk...

Sounds like our guys were over confident, and the lack of preperstion showed.

Well this explains a lot, clearly Iowa did not watch any game film because if they have they sure and heck would have known who McCaffery was

Anybody have the link to what King supposedly said? I listened to the Jaleel Johnson interview that he supposedly took offense to. He may have gotten cherry-picked portions of that interview from an assistant, because it was hardly an arrogant interview, or derogatory towards Stanford.

This is precious coming from a conference that is all about glitz, and "look at me, attitude". What a f'in putz, yeah the Hawkeyes have always been known to be a cocky, arrogant bunch.

About what I would suspect from the P10, can't even win with class.

Ya Stanford is real glitzy. Their attitude seems real business like , like you guys will be working for us someday so shut the hell up. Kid just said 'back it up ' and well you saw what happend. Touchdown Stanford !

If thus is true, it says a lot. They obviously found motivation and came out firing. We stayed on the bus.

This is kind of funny because I have a Stanford alum working for me. Granted I owe him dinner now after yesterday's game.

I don't see anything wrong with what Iowa players said. Stanford executed and Iowa didn't. If they need bulletin material to get up for the Rose Bowl then they have an issue.

Man, not sure I'd want a Stanford grad working for me if they are like those weirdos in their band. Hey, revkev73, why don't you go back to Nebraskee and crow about that win over "power house" UCLA.

McCaffery prob got tips from his daddy to lather up his linemen with crisco so the defense can't grab anyone. Worked for the Bronco's in the 90's and even Mark Schereif admitted to it.

Pretty sure that everything they're talking about either was taken out of context, exaggerated, or was made up.....deal with it.

That explains a lot. Some of it must have ended up on the Iowa cleats? :(

Every Stanford fan I've come across so far on this board has had class. . . until now. But you get that with every fan base. Congrats on being that guy.

This was textbook male motivation 101 by Shaw. Pretty much classic Fry. It does not even have to be true it's just about getting your players to believe in the disrespect. There was even that song and dance bit from Shaw pumping up Kirk as this coaching icon. They needed the chip and edge. They masterfully engineered it and you could see it in their focus and play.

Our head coach was completely oblivious to what was going on. He played right into their hands. More concerned with our team enjoying and soaking up the experience. Working the freshman, few of which would have any role in this game. Yada yada yada. No extra work put in.

KF should have been out in front pumping the media that we were a heavy underdog, Vegas had us as a 7 pt dog, Stanford got screwed and should have been in the playoffs, we have little chance to win, McCaffery the best player they have seen in 10 years on tape, etc. Anything he could say to build them up and put his team in a weak light publically. Then behind the scenes you give the players the Stanford and national pundits disrespecting us message.

We do not have the talent so we must play with the chip/edge but KF as the head coach let Stanford establish it for themselves. Not prepared for the physcology of the game.

This was the first I've heard of any statements from Iowa players being bulletin board material. Haven't seen the quotes. If they did say what is claimed, I'd say that wasn't wise. Sounds like Jaleel Johnson's comments were taken out of context. Whatever the case, Stanford's coaching staff at least convinced their guys that Iowa was talking smack about them, and it obviously got them fired up. They obviously did a great job of motivating them.

And it was clear that Iowa wasn't ready to play. That's on them. Wish our coaches had had the Hawks as ready to go as Stanford's staff had their guys.

Don't pretty much all teams and coaches try to use "bulletin board" material on a regular basis? Iowa included?

You would think but I would bet it never crossed KF's mind. Who had the chip/edge/focus? It sure was not us.

We looked like we out there for an kids day open scrimmage. I think that spoke volumes about our prep both physically and mentally.

Who knows if true or not. Two things I believe, however. Shaw played "Capt. Icon" like the proverbial fiddle and while he had good numbers King is a dirty player and better suited for MSU imo.

I call BS that King ever made those comments in that context, but whatever.

Maybe Garnett will tell that story when he comes to Omaha to accept the Outland. We'll see how that goes for him.

King jaws with opponents on the field more than I'd like, but I wouldn't call him a dirty player by any means.

Face it we got punked by Shaw. Does not matter if any of the comments were true. That's not the point. KF was asleep at the wheel. The minute Shaw pumped up Kirk as a hall-of-famer Kirk should have responded in kind with Shaw being the 'best coach in America' type talk or something similar. Shaw never believed for a second anything he said publically about Iowa or KF. Textbook 101.

King said he was going to "pancake" Garnett, which doesn't even make sense seeing as how he is on defense. I don't have a problem with your kids not knowing who McCaffrey is, but your coaching staff sure as hell should have and they game planned like they didn't.

King took two dirty shots at our players, one which resulted in the referee giving him a talking. Garnett pretty much summed it up, pretty weak schedule that masked weakness. Even our lone conference loss was against a team that would probably put up 50 against every big 10 team sans msu. Dont get me started on northwestern. Not even the same team.

Why were any of our players supposed to know about some sophomore that's been playing in another conference all year?

It would be stupid if our players actually watched tape of a team they were playing in the rose bowl or read up on opposing players. That's just for message board nerds, not actual Hawkeye players.
