*****Summer Olympics Thread🏅*****

USA/Australia finish kinda reminded me of Iowa beating LSU as time expired 🤩

Beating Australia is a huge deal for the US. Australia is a powerhouse and won Gold over New Zealand in 2016.

Edit to say I fly to Australia TOMORROW for 15 days on a rugby trip and I hope those guys will be down for some good banter after our medal.

Best part of working from home most days - I have it on in background from 8-4!

I'm a teacher who has two young girls. How great is it to show them (and them actually care!) to see the power and grace of the gymnasts, the absolute beasts for the rugby team, worldwide soccer stars for our most popular women's team, the grit and power of swimmers, the hustle of volleyball players (beach and indoor) knowing that Caitlin Clark is the best American point guard even if not in the tournament 😝...

I must be teaching my oldest one some pretty bad nationalism as she's cheering for every non American to fall in gymnastics today.

oops, it's best of 5 sets

I hope I didn't jinx them :(

So a couple of contrarian cranky old man thoughts, a few days in...

I've watched a bit of coverage here and there - maybe a total of an hour or so a day. Obviously it's nice to see american athletes do well, particularly in great niche sports like rugby, which more kids should play.

But the whole thing is just so surprisingly...dull. First of course is the heavily edited/packaged format, some of which comes from the challenge of time zones, which produces a product that is essentially a curated highlight show. That has the effect of eliminating the drama that can only be produced by real time viewing, or at the very least, tape-delayed viewing. Second, speaking of drama, the lack of it is compounded and only underscored by the completely over the top emoting of the commentators trying way too hard to create a faux version of it. For all we know are probably not even at the event site in some cases. I long for the days of broadcasters who understood the power of silence. Third, is it my imagination or the only people attending this family and celebrities? I kid of course, but who wants to bet whether the celebs are paying their own way or coming over on NBC/IOC's dime so they can be cut to on the broadcast?

And then there's the river Seine. Does it strike anyone as strange that, for a "problem" that was so significant that it entailed a 1.5 billion dollar "solution", the French government didn't actually think it important enough to address until someone wanted to take some pics of athletes swimming in the river?

Australian goalie "loves to get on the end of those balls". Or maybe it was Rodman. Somebody likes the balls.

Agree with many of your points, but the only thing dull is the NBC network coverage. The best moments and coverage are down the cable dial on USA, E!, and CNBC. The network sports and coverage in general has been crap. I turned it off and haven’t gone back since I saw Colin Jost In Tahiti “covering” surfing.

Yikes the USA women 3x3 just lost to Azerbaijan (even though a few of them were Americans)

That 3x3 team has had some pretty significant injuries, Cameron Brink probably being the biggest injury of them all. I watched their first game and they just looked disjointed. HVL was working her hard...but they did not look great.

Cloe Lacasse started for Canada but is subbed off in the second half. 0-0 with Colombia. 6 point deduction yet they will still qualify or even TOP the group, with a win.

EDIT: There it is. 1-0 Canada.

I'm not sure one of them was from Azerbaijan. Regardless. Another player was about 2 bills and 37 years old and she dominated us when in. This team is embarassing so far.

Yeah, and her Wikipedia page says that she was born in Philly and went to college at Pitt

Don’t bring a knife to a sword fight with a South Korean. Just won their third straight Olympic gold in men’s team saber.

The two-time individual gold medal winner is extremely handsome and like 6’4”. He could put up Wilt Chamberlain numbers in Korea if he wanted to.

Lots of skepticism about the new world record in the 100m freestyle. Chinese guy broke the record by almost half a second.

Night and day difference. Coach Emma Hayes is saving the day. Thank goodness we got her from Chelsea. I have a former player playing for Vlatko right now and I'm so tempted to ask what she really thinks of him... but I won't.
Moving on from the old guard seems to have brought the team together.

I think Rapinoe and probably a couple others were not good for chemistry. Nothing to base that on except observation from afar and how close the team seems now.

Swanson and Smith are local girls from our club so cool to see them doing so well.

I think players were TOO comfortable with him. Much like Berhalter with the men.
