Systemically bad defense.

I guess Izzo's defense was worse and team was less athletic?
The narrative that Iowa is at an athletic disadvantage can't be carried over to this team.

This team is not at an athletic disadvantage. Its on par with the majority of the league at worst.

A depth disadvantage yes.

The whole point of saying "systematic" was that it has nothing to do with players and everything to do with system.

The system of not taking defense seriously enough to even drill your team on the basic principles.

Iowa plays defense like a pick up game rather than an organized team sport.

There's a reason Iowa is last in defense every year.

We're not deep enough to lose, guys to foul problems. If fr, km, or tp goes down we don't have a deep enough bench. Sandfort and p mac are our bench with small appearances from dix who is fine in small quantities. It's the getting lost on rotation and overhedging that seems to be where we struggle the most.
Depth is part of the issue but as you said, that doesn't explain the lack of attention to detail and communication that is always a constant with Fran.

They're always out of position off the ball. Thats because they aren't going over this stuff enough.

When are you people going to understand, that the system Fran runs will never produce great defensive . It just won't. Fran wants as many touches or offensive positions as can be produced in a game. That also translates to allowing the opposition lots of offensive positions. When the opponents are missing shots, Iowa wins handedly, when they shoot like Michigan St did on Sunday, games depend on whether Iowa's offense is clicking or not. I know that makes sense to me, evidently not so much with the rest of you.
Conversely, if a team like Wisconsin milks the 35 second clock down to say under 5 seconds and then initiates the offense, then less touches for the other team, hence, a Wisconsin like team will always be known for their defense. Those type of teams also play good man to man defense to also slow the opposition down. So you can wine all you want about Iowa not playing defense but it's just not what Fran's system is about. If you want Iowa to play better defensively, maybe Barta needs to bring back Todd Lickliter......JUST KIDDING!!!!!!
Can Iowa play better defense, absolutely, and has produced better defensive teams in the past, but this years roster makeup and Fran's player rotations just falls short of what it takes to get the job done this year.
Except who they are and hopefully they will get a break in the NCAA tournament, otherwise hope next years team will be better on defense.
Who's asking for great defense?

How about something approaching even average?

How about not bad?

How about just not the worst every year?

Is it a given that you have to be last in the conference on defensive efficiency/ per possessions every year just because you play fast?

Beilines Michigan teams used to be like Iowa, then he admitted he needed help on defense and his results changed dramatically without changing his offense.

Fran could do the same thing but we all know he won't.

Again, not asking for great or even good. Let atleast aspire to be average and not the worst every year.

Its not.

But it shows you have to value defense as much as offense. He doesn't.

Fran's game has always been offense first, and that won't change,.. but simply valuing defense doesn't make it happen...

The players change but the attention to detail never does. Communication and cohesion is always lacking.

Always poor fundamentals, confused on what what to do on a screen.

Always more worried about not fouling than getting stops.

The sample size is more than big enough to know its not going to change.

Its become pretty clear that this is what spinning your wheels and going nowhere looks like.
I wish our defense was better but after that tremendous win I'm not going to get upset this week

Hawks turned them over alot and got 29 points on second chance rebounding. That really was impressive.

Blah blah blah/ what about all those teams we pile up points against? You are just anti- iowa coaches because you could do better . Ha ha

If you want to argue with the man come up with something better. He's just stating facts. Iowa's defense is bad. It's 170th in the country bad according to Kenpom. Iowa's offense is great, at least at home. That has nothing to do with the lack of defense. Really good teams are effective at both ends of the court. Until Iowa can do that, their upside is going to be limited.
