Fran said his players didn't like the basketball. I know this is a real thing but my question is: why don't you play with the wilson during the regular season? It seems odd to me to not control that variable.

My problem with this excuse is that we had many days to practice shooting with the new orangey beast Evo NXT. We knew it was going to be used in the tourney and that we hadn't seen it all year. In those circumstances, as a coach I am arranging as much shooting practice with the new ball as possible before the tourney game. Did they do that?

The referees should not have mattered. But we definitely got screwed by Adams at the end. Seems like he is one of the worst referees out of the SEC. Numerous Non-Iowa fans complaining about him on social media.

A new different brand of ball is being used for the tourney this year. Don’t know if we have played with it before today. Some reviews I read on the ball - “too bouncy”, “super light throws your shot off”, “very bouncy tougher to control”, “affects my shot too sticky to the fingers”, “tougher to control while dribbling” to name a few.

While the Evo NXT balls were approved for college teams this season, NCAA rules allow home teams to choose the brand and model of basketball they use. Teams use anything from Nike, to Adidas, to Wilson, to Spalding depending on their preference and their shoe-apparel partnerships. Occasionally, coaches have admitted to purposefully choosing an obscure ball to give their teams a minor psychological edge. Indiana guard Xavier Johnson called the Evo NXT “a good ball” but attributed his worst performance of the season to getting used to shooting it. In December, Johnson went 3-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-9 from behind the arc in a 64-56 victory over Notre Dame. “The ball is just — it's just different,” Johnson said Wednesday. “It's more sticky, and it's a different English going off the glass when you make layups.”
The reviews from viewers have been much harsher.

We both played with same ball and referees. We should have overcame adversity regardless. We didn’t play well enough to win.

People in the game thread were also seriously blaming the rims. Now Fran is bringing up the basketball. The shamefulness has no bounds.

I didn’t blame the rim, but the ball seemed more jacked up than Joe T was.

I also said both teams have to use it. Get the ball on the block and less outside shots.

Don't disagree at all, but besides Keegan - who did we have on our roster that could handle the rock on the blocks? Throw in the fact that Keegan was getting double/tripled teamed and we had zero answers besides maybe Rebraca, so here we are...:(

The Wilson ball appears to be really bouncy, and I have watched most of the games (DVR). I do not believe I have seen so many balls bounce high over the backboard, sound like a rock when dribbling, take high bounces when dribbling, and bounce around the rim as much.

But not why Iowa lost but could contribute to what seems like low scoring games IMO.

All schools, D1 through D3, knew this Wilson ball would be the ball in the tourneys, and all had the option to use it throughout the year. I know of a few D3 schools who did just that because they anticipated having a chance to compete in the tournament. The problem is most D1 schools use the ball aligned with their shoe contracts, and may not have been allowed, contractually ($$$) to use the Wilson ball during the season. But, it was no surprise that this would be the ball of choice.

I believe the NBA used the ball this year. Many unhappy about it. Mark Cuban commented that it was a 5.99 Walmart ball. In the tournament 3pt FG percentages are in the 20’s for many games. Better hit nothing but net or it ain’t going in.
