Thanks again Tony

Moving JBo back to the 1 and giving extended minutes to Tony has been the difference maker.

Tony is so physical, a trait we have lacked at guard for awhile. That rebound dunk was a highlight tonight.

Tony is one of those physical , athletic street ball guys that just knows how to Score....I always wondered why Iowa never got any of those type guys. I was all on board with Fran going more athletic with JoeT, Perkins, Ulis.
The description I'd heard of Perkins out of High School was he was more of a shooter, but he's really more dribble drive/sneaky game in the post. That really complements JBO's 3pt shooting.

I love JoeT's game...but smallish JoeT with another small guard in JBO, doesn't work very well defensivley, rebounding, and JoeT doesn't have the paint game that Perkins has.

Perkins, CMAC, and JBO, Kris are all trending up...

He fits in with the rest of the starters really well. Brings something the others don't. And when he is making just an occasional jumper, he becomes really impactful. Trend line is up.

Perkins has really developed this year and provides defense, toughness, another scorer and dependability at the free throw line. He is best when he is able to be the 4th or 5th scoring option within the flow of the Iowa offense clicking. In the 2nd half yesterday it appeared that Michigan concentrated on shutting down Keegan and JBO which meant that other players needed to work for shots. Perkins is one of the better players doing this. Ulis was a bit unsure of whether or not to go inside or shoot beyond the arc and he did neither too effectively. Getting the most out of our secondary scoring weapons will be critical for us to move along in the post-season.

Love the way your confidence is growing these last few games. A different team when you are on the floor.
Great post! I thought about starting a Perkins appreciation thread too! He brings a junkyard dog mentality to the game that I absolutely love. He's playing his role very well. Picks his spots to make a play and never backs down. He's trying to impose his will on the opposition and he's talented enough to do it. I love it.

Spot on. Plus Tony is afraid of no one. He and Joe where what we really needed for a long time. Yes athletic, but more so just plan tough hard nosed guys who play to win without looking for their own fanfare. Kirk Ferentz type of guys. Tough with character. Winners. Glad we have then and Ulis too!

I can't remember the last time Iowa had a guard getting tip dunks.

He didn't even take a running start.

Yes a Perkins type player is a new look for a Fran team.
My recollection of 2G under Fran:

Gatens: could dunk, but smostly 3pt shooter
Josh Ogelsby: no
Clemmons: could dunk, but smallish, definitely not a scorer
Ellingsen: no
CJ: no
CMAC: No

El Smootho
For those of you who are not bilingual, that translates to "The Smootho".

The 3 he hit was so pure I thought he had airballed it.

Nothing moved in the net.

He is now someone teams have to game plan for.
He’s at his best shooting when he doesn’t have time to think, just guns it. His form looks fine, but most of the shots he makes are with someone in his face.

I'm not convinced Tony Perkins has turned a corner, but he's certainly played a big part recently, no doubt about it. For awhile after he began starting, I thought he was mediocre at best. He brings a lot to the table IF he can keep getting shots to fall, regardless of where they come from, and he's definitely not afraid to attack the rim (we know JBo isn't up for that).

I'm just hoping this recent run gives him some confidence that he can make a positive contribution more often than not. Sure hope that's the case, he's been real good lately.

Ulis only played 9 minutes & put up just 2 shots; both shots were ugly. He's better than that. Ulis had 2 steals.

One thing I do like is Fran only played 9 players.

Minutes for the 4 players off the bench:
27 Kris
24 Connor
09 Ulis
08 JoeT
Never been quite sure how the +/minus stat works but it had to be extreme Ulis VS Perkins
I like Ulis plenty , but Perkins has been the man lately
All the talk is how much we have improved with JBO at the point ,but Perkins starting and his additional minutes have also made a huge difference

Tony Perkins is the first Iowa PG in years that I can watch without playing the “I wish he was (faster, bigger, more athletic, better shooter, smarter with the ball, better defender, etc.)” game.

Every Iowa PG under Fran has seemingly had at least one Achilles heal. With Tony Perkins I’m just good with his entire game. May not be a superstar but is a very well rounded player.

Wonder if there’s a correlation having successive games with increased playing time and better results because of……..NAH, couldn’t be.

Testing the memory here, as I was really young when he was a Hawkeye…but am I wrong to get a Ray Thompson vibe from Perkins’ game?

JT and AU spen too much time dribbling. Tony has elevated himself by keeping busy in the motion offense. The movement is opening driving lanes for him. The other two are stuck in trying to force the drive
