Mass Exodus

He looked fat. Compared to last year. Of course Payton looks as if he’s never touched a weight.
Freeman was an anomaly to me. So much of this years success relied on his development and gaining strength. Instead he looked really slow and completely lost at times, especially on defense. Then comes the finger fiasco. I really thought this would be a breakout year for him with all the talk about offseason training we were all hearing. Granted he didn't have much help or coaching when it came to rebounding and defense.

Too bad Thelwell is out of eligibility.
He's petitioned for another season...so hold that thought...
Let me see if I have this right, the basis for Thelwell's petition is that he effectively graduated in 3 years as the 2020-21 covid year doesn't count towards basketball eligibility and since he "graduated in 3 years", he's eligible to have 2 years as a grad transfer.

Is that correct?

They hired Sprinkle.
He brought in guys.
They are last in BIG this year.
Magical overnite transformation is the exception, not the rule.
Hope for better but prepared for worse.
In one year I think we can be patient. But Fran’s time has come and gone. I don’t see him hitting a sweet 16 ever anywhere. He had his chances and he missed.

Iowa is basically tied with what you posted. Difference is, Iowa's coach has been here 15 years.
Like you posted, magical overnight transformation is the exception, not the rule, but, somehow some think Fran will do that at Iowa

Any mass exodus needs to start with Fran. A few players would be great to have, but the vibe hasn't been right on the team for a while. Not sure if the recruits or transfer would still come, but a new coach really will be starting from scratch. Not a recipe for success.

True.
If all these guys are leaving then fran should also.
Bad timing for Frans best recruiting class with 3 4 stars that will bail ,most likely.
Best case: new coach can talk some into sticking.

Maybe Iowa shouldn’t even try. Too risky. Remember what happened when they ran Tom Davis out of town.

If Fran returns, I’m sure the reasons given would be the recruits coming in, not firing a coach after one sub-par year, you don’t fire the winningest men’s BB coach in school history, he’s earned the right to leave when he wants, etc.

The trade off is even greater fan apathy and lower attendance.

Fran is who he is. I have no doubt next season will be better, but would it be better than any other of Fran’s seasons?

It can't get much worse.
roll the dice and see what happens. I'm willing to endure a couple tough years just to get some new blood into the program.
Guessing most see it the same way

These are only rumors right now. For another perspective I believe it's the players agents putting these "rumors" out there. It's exactly what coaches do to get more money and extended contracts. Threaten to leave for another job and negotiate a better pay day. Now days players are doing the exact same thing. Sometimes it works out and they gain more pay & sometimes it backfires and the school will say, "don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out". IMO.

honest question. How does Fran suddenly land three 4* recruits when it's looking like the end of his tenure?

I have got some pretty good intel that Harding, Freeman, Dix, Dembele, and Trajore are all entering the portal ASAP! Again this is coming from someone that has good intel. I’ll take heat if it doesn’t happen but it’s looking like a completely different team regardless if Fran stays or not!
I heard the same for the Illinois pair

Owen will easily find a better place than Iowa...it isn't that hard to do
Certainly if he has a path like Tony Perkins.

TP moved from an underperforming Fran team to a mizzu squad that is in 5th place in by far the best conference in the country. And reportedly for a nice payday. His off-season move is looking like a very wise choice.

And to add further, mizzu was terrible last season and completely revamped their team. Hmm, seems like that might also be relevant to Iowa's current mess.

If Fran returns, we are bottom feeder again next year assuming Dix is gone (mother's illness) and Freeman leaves for better NIL, better chance to make NcAA tourney elsewhere.

It is a total rebuild either way. Fran is already Lame Duck, contract won't be renewed, and no history of NCAA success, I like the odds the new coach can at least match what Fran will provide next year. Fran has a really bad NcAA tourney record---that won't be hard to beat. I don't think there are a lot of coaches out there at P5 schools with 29 years of head coaching without a Sweet16. Usually if you are that bad, you get fired and end up selling insurance before you put in 29 years.

I think Kansas St Made the Sweet16 after they went with Tang. ISU made Sweet16 with TJ. St. Johns is doing pretty well with Pittino.
No doubt all changes don't work out, nor does staying the course on a declining coach.

^ Exactly.

It will a complete and total lame duck year next season, even with the recruiting, if Fran comes back.

Hopefully Beth & the Iowa administration won't let that happen. Whether that means buying Fran's contract out (IE, the full $4.2M) or Fran walks away on his own (but still likely with a renegotiated chunk of the buyout).

It will definitely be interesting to see what happens in about 2 weeks.

I think there were almost 2,000 players in the portal last season. That'd be what, 4-6 players per team for an average...
A good percentage of these either don’t find another school, or end up at a lower level school. There are good players to be had.

Not likely to find one where he gets as many minutes as he does at Iowa, or one where he is the main man like he is at Iowa.
Patrick got 32 minutes a game. As a sophmore Owen had way better numbers, and only played 26 minutes a game. As a junior he would make more money, and have his pick of some pretty good teams, and his play is what is going to have to make him the man.

I don’t care if the cheerleaders leave, too… blow the whole shit show up …

Well yeah, Patrick’s Dad was the coach.
