Mass Exodus

There are a couple of guys I wouldn't mind keeping but overall I am fine with a total house cleaning in MBB. After watching their defense and toughness the last several years, I think I would take my chances with a new coach and culture.
That’s where I am at, having a MAX of two players come back for the rebuilding process. It’s not like this roster is loaded with untapped athletic talent that just needs to be unleashed/coached up by the right HC. I don’t want the new coach to pull a Prime Time move, but he will really need to have a few difficult discussions with some of our players who really probably should be on mid major rosters…😎

There will be plenty of good players available in the portal that would come to Iowa.

Freeman was an anomaly to me. So much of this years success relied on his development and gaining strength. Instead he looked really slow and completely lost at times, especially on defense. Then comes the finger fiasco. I really thought this would be a breakout year for him with all the talk about offseason training we were all hearing. Granted he didn't have much help or coaching when it came to rebounding and defense.
He needed to be trained by Garzas father. Does he even have the desire to train like that?

They’re not going to get any more money out of Iowa.

Brad already (irresponsibly) said that he basically ran out of nil basketball funds this year and had to pay players out of his own pocket
I agree with you on Brad's misstatement.

But I think there is more money to get for basketball with a coach who can deliver results and engage better with fans and boosters.

I agree Dix has been one of the bright spots. Creighton is what I’m hearing… Sounds like his mom’s health isn’t the best so it would make sense to be back home if that was the case! He’s a high character kid who didn’t have much of a supporting cast to help him on this team!
Would they still go to Creighton if McDermott calls it quits at the end of the season? I have heard there is a possibility he will step down.

Had not heard that. He has a great program, and they lost their 2 (who was very good) early this season and have recovered. I have watched most of their games and they get up and down the court. They do lose Kalkbrenner (5) and Ashworth (1) this year and they are very good. So, maybe GM does not want to go thru a rebuild.

Why? Because of the abundance of positivity from students and the fan base in general? Iowa is not by any means a prime location other than the fact it is in the Big Ten. Give Iowa State all the crap you want, I promise you the players enjoy playing in front of those fans.

But look at the Iowa women and the fans that come to those games. They had four years to take advantage of one of the most dynamic women's players to come along in a generation. Why can't the men do that too? Because anyone who is near that level of talent is gone in a year. The Iowa men's program is middle of the road at best in the Big Ten and that is not going to change.

Holler at me when the men's team makes two NCAA championship games in a row. Guessing CHA might be full if/when that happens, I just hope I'm not dead. The men's program has reached depths I never imagined possible growing up with great hoops in the 80s and early 90s. I will respectfully disagree with you about being middle of the road and unable to change. Just look at programs this year. Iowa State is having a great season. Missouri didn't win a conference game last year and they're ranked 14th. Maryland, Memphis, Louisville have all been up and down recently, they're up this year. If we cannot compete with teams like this from a recruiting and results standpoint on a regular basis, well then you may as well crater Carver tomorrow.

The right coach with the right system will recruit the right players to fit that system. No more square pegs into round hole stuff or settling for middling players. That will get people in the stands and produce results. Results MUST come first before people will come back. I won't even watch games on TV anymore. If you would have told me that three years ago, I would have said you were high.

When you tell me about how great the hoops were in the 80's and 90's, I think there is a lot of revisionist history just how far those teams advanced. Here it is since 1980 through current. Final Four - (1) 1980; Elite 8 (2) 1980, 1987; Sweet 16 (5) 1980, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1899. So please don't try to tell me how golden of a history Iowa basketball has.

And I was using the women as an example of how they can and did take advantage of something the men can't. No talent at the level of CC is ever going to stay four years in the men's game.

Did the 1899 team play with peach baskets?

Something tells me Fran's departure is imminent, and the news has been leaked to the team. Man, I hope so at least.

A couple of guys portaling out, ok sure, but 5+ at one time?

And Dembele leaving makes little sense, if not, because he has a pretty long leash in FM's system.
Dembele is awful, bye. Harding, below average. They can all leave.

I was young, so a bit of revision I'm sure...but, making it to the round of 32 13 times between 1980-99 sounds like a dream come true. And the fact that the possibility of doing something truly special felt legit. On that note, I hate UNLV and especially Freddie Banks(?). They destroyed the teenage dreams of a young Iowa fan not once, but twice!!

I don't doubt for a second OP's news,

Seriously, there is no other option other than burning it down and rebuilding.
Thanks Jimmy! I just want what’s best for the state of the program and if they have to start over than so be it! Getting the right hire could expedite the process!

Go watch the replay of Iowa vs the Fab 4 after the death of Chris Street. Or the game when Dr Tom scored 100 on the General in Iowa City. Student section and the crowds were raucous. Totally unlike the mausoleum that it is now.
That game against Michigan, the first home game after the death of Street, was the loudest game I have ever attended. I was in the student section and although I could feel myself screaming, I could not hear my own voice.
