Perry, Iowa
We just beat a really good team....and we played really good defense. According to Brian Butchc the rest fo the B10 should be afraid because Iowa is playing defense.....think about that statement from an objective observer.

So much to be happy about:

We didn't play good defense against Gonzaga.....and we turned it around big time in a few days!

We got beat bad on the boards by the Zags....and we turned it around in a few days against a really good rebounding team in Purdue.

We didn't shoot great....and we still won by 15 points against a really good team.

We just went up a game on MSU and Illinois in the conference race.

Keegan Murray continues to shine.

Joe W continues to play at a high level....this against a physical and tough team....

We didn't let Gonzaga beat us twice.

Luka

I think that we actually did get at least 3 calls go our way that shouldn't have.......that is a record as far as I'm concerned.

As good of a win that this was.....we all know that this team can play even better.

Joe T and Patrick both had some good minutes/plays.

21 assists on 24 baskets.....

CJ and JBO aren't shooting anywhere close to what they can.......and we still won by 15 points over a good conference opponent.

I just heard Bobby Hansen say that we closed the game out on an 8-0 run.......they didn't score in that final stretch.

Garza the first player since Dennis Hopson to score 20 or more points in 17 straight B10 games.

JBO 300 3 pointers all time and now in the top 10 in B10 history for 3s made.

We haven't shot well from 3 in the last two games. Second half was better tonight though. Defense much improved. Purdue had several mistakes on their own but we forced a fair amount of turnovers as well.

The boards were huge tonight. There was a noticeable difference in how we attacked the glass.

I wouldn't say it was our best game but it was a convincing win. Good start to Big Ten play!

I will agree our defense was better tonight. However, Purdue missed a bunch of WIDE open 3s.

Yes, but there's a reason they were being missed. Iowa never allowed them to get comfortable or in rhythm. Defense set the tone early. How many times has Iowa started a game lackadaisical on defense and guys started getting going early? And then when Iowa decides to pick it up hot shooters are making difficult shots? A LOT.

Purdue missing open 3s was a byproduct of the defensive energy Iowa exerted from the beginning.

Q. Fran, you guys yesterday were hammering home the points of rebounding, hustle, and defensive effort. What did you like out of your guys tonight?

FRAN McCAFFERY: It was by far our best effort on the glass and defensively.

I thought we were pretty good -- really good actually -- against Carolina. We were locked in.

But we out-rebounded them. Which is hard to do. Purdue is always a terrific rebounding team. They run a lot of stuff and they execute extremely well. Always have.

So we had to stay connected and we had to keep the effort and intensity. So I think you look at what the game plan was coming in, you know, it was defense and rebounding, and it was probably our best effort of the year.

Then we turn around and have 21 assists on 24 field goals, so that was also impressive.

They got a wake up call Saturday but they need to bring this effort on defense and rebounding every night.

This team has a tendency to drift into complacency when their shots are falling.

What I feel encouraged about is we didn't excel much of anything offensively but dominated a good team defensively. We need to play this way in the BIG. We can score when we have to. We have to focus on stops.

If Conner McCaffery and/or Jack Nunge ever become a legitimate threat from 3PT range Iowa will be set because those two are being left alone out on the perimeter.
I like Nunge but there must be better options than his three point shooting. Go to the basket like Wieskamp for easy lay ups...

I think Fran is starting to figure out that the way you beat Purdue, Wisconsin, MSU is you dish the defense & physical play right back at them. The more you try and bury those teams offensively, the more you'll be left wondering why you got out-rebounded 2-1 & lost by 10.

Stick to the basics & the points/win will follow.

It was the right game for a bounce back from Gonzaga. Liked the defense. If we can just improve on that a little each week, this team will go far .

JBo will find his shot. And when he does the team will be able to take on anyone.

It is going to be a fun year!

I would agree to an extent. Iowa did much better at not letting Purdue just get a bunch of shots at the rim. Purdue was less than 50% on 2's, and Iowa limited their offensive rebounds, at least much better than they have been. Iowa's effort was consistently better on defense than it has been all year. That sort of effort will win many games in the Big 10. You want to be a team that wins by double digits when you aren't shooting lights out.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I truly believe we haven't seen how good this team really is yet. I think Nunge has the ability to shoot it better from 3. I know JoBo does, and CJ has been somewhat quiet the past couple of games, and we know he's a stud. If we get everyone firing on all cylinders, we can beat anyone.
Garza is Garza. Nobody I would rather have. But Joe W. is an unsung hero. The guy is just good at basketball. He would be the primary focus of most teams. He can shoot and he's gotten so much better at getting to the basket and finishing strong. He deserves a lot of praise in my humble opinion.

Take Garza out of the equation, and I'll take Iowa's subs vs the starters in a game anytime. Joe, Nunge, K. Murray continue to shine coming off bench...to the point can't wait to see them sent in to help Garza out...since the other guys (except Joe W)...are not much support past couple of games...especially early in games.

Bohannon (zero consistency) and Conner continue to be the weak spot of this team It's a crime that Conner starts over Joe....and I don't buy that rhetoric about his calming effect and all that b.s......seems that some announcers were spoon fed some bragging points to justify him starting....but the eye test doesn't support that. It's hard to come off the bench and make impacts and constantly feeling pressure to prove yourself....Joe has done that and more. i trust Jess Settles opinions...and he always has nice comments about Joe....not a peep about Conner.

Liked the first half lineup with JT, JW, Keegan, Patrick, and Nunge. Moved the ball and played good D. I suppose adding CJF for either Patrick or Keegan at some point would help them score a bit more with this lineup but they did extend our lead in first half... good things going forward with life after Garza

Joe needs to play starter minutes, even if he doesn't start. Those should come at the expense of JBo, not CMac, unless the opponent lacks size or speed, or JBo regains his shooting touch.

This is not a great pu team, but they are certainly respectable. Agree that they are probably a middle of the pack B1G team this year.

Obviously encouraging that the D stepped it up on a night when the perimeter shooting was again not great. Neither Bohannon or Fredrick were lighting it up. And Jack and Connor were an abysmal 0 for 8 combined from beyond the arc. I love the grit and determination that Jack is showing, but he's got to stop shooting that ball unless wide open late in the shot clock.

More Joe T please. Joe got 11 minutes; Jordan had 29 minutes.

Overall a good conference win.

I'd be fine if neither of them shoot a three again this year.

Sorry they have to shoot them when they are open and in the flow of the offense or don’t even play the game . As someone noted Pmac is 4 for his last 7 - 3 pointers

I think Purdue is pretty good. They have a beast inside and they were shooting 38% from 3 up until this game. They are a Matt Painter team, so the play defense. I think the Freshmen they have are going to be up/down, so there will be more variance, but they can beat all the best in B1G on a good 3pt shooting night.
