The elephant in the room:

Connor and Keegan are completely different players and both had large contributions to the win last night. Both of them play solid defense and rebound well. Keegan is a better scorer while Connor is a better facilitator.

Connor is one of the best passers in the B1G and was in at the end of the game to get the ball in bounds and into Jordan’s hands. We saw how critical that was when Wisconsin was called for a five second violation in the final minute.

You’re exactly right. The comparison of the two players is not valid. Murray would be far less effective if asked to do what Connor does, and vice versa. They both have significant, but different, roles on this team.

Joe T did something last night that Connor should think about. Got the ball wide open at the three point line, knew he shouldn’t shoot it, took a dribble or two in, and canned a mid range jumper. Beautiful play by a player that knows his weaknesses. You don’t have to shoot it where you catch it, you can move closer if you make the decision fast enough,

Connor is a decent player and helps the team. However, Keegan is a legitimate star with his productivity. Keegan is a better defender, rebounder, perimeter shooter, and scorer. Connor is a better passer.

It'd be different if we didn't otherwise have a PG and so we needed Connor at point. But when the choice is between playing Connor/Wieskamp at the 3/4 positions or Wieskamp/Murray at the 3/4 positions, the obvious choice is Wieskamp/Murray. I'm not trying to diminish Connor's contributions as a player, but Murray needs to be getting at least 25+ minutes per game. His combination of efficient scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocks is better than Aaron White's career averages, for example. Would anyone here really argue that Connor should be getting more playing time than Aaron White if he were on this team?

If people really think Connor needs 25+ minutes too, those minutes should be coming from someone other than Murray - most likely Bohannon.

This sums up my thoughts as well, and I thought Fran did an outstanding job spreading the minutes last nite. With Nunge out, Murray is REALLY taking his game to another level. Not having another large body really concerns me for the IL game/getting deep in the tourney...if Murray (or God forbid Garza) get in foul trouble we will be screwed....

No he hasn't. He's 2 for 19 in the last 5 games. That's under 11%. He's been absolutely brutal shooting the ball. The only good thing about Connor's shooting is that he doesn't do it very much
What?!?! Shooting better? You have got to be kidding? Don’t you have to be shooting bad to shoot better ! He’s below even bad shooting ! I saw it in person and he wasn’t even close tonight.

Hmmm. Those stats prove I'm wrong but I remember him having a couple games where he was much better when he caught and shot without hesitation. He did not do that last night.

That is an odd stat because I think that is what the team shot today from three.

I think the elephant in the room would be the Hawkeye shooting. Did they have an off night? Or was it more shooting in a large football stadium? Hopefully just an off night.

The team shot the 3 bad tonight without question. It's not the first time. They had similar 3 point shooting performances against Gonzaga and Indiana (20%). The difference between those losses and tonight's win was defense. Hopefully that's the last 3 point shooting night like that for the season.

Im not convinced hes actually left handed

To clarify, Connor does understand how to feed the post. But that isn't a skill that every other player shouldn't have down pat when LG is posting up. Connor does it well and consistently. There's just no reason Keegan shouldn't be playing 30+ a game. Shit is foolish. He is one of the best players in the league. It's Ferentz-level deference and nepotism that Connor is getting those minutes.

i don’t want this to sound like a knock on Keegan because I LOVE the guy’s play but you say feeding the post is a skill every other player should have down pat. This is the one area I see Keegan doesn’t do well right now. It’s not so much he’s poor at it as much as he just doesn’t try to do it. There are numerous times he looks in there and SHOULD feed him but doesn‘t. It’s hard to believe he has just 12 assists on the SEASON While Connor has over 100. Keegan is not adept at feeding LG, a skill you say every player should have down pat.

The minutes should be even at worse or completely flipped to 15 Conner 28 Keegan. I’ll die on this hill.

Our offense in 2nd half was completely stagnant until Keegan came in. Conner played well in last 5 but I’ll give him that.

Keegan brings better offense, shot blocking threat, tenacious rebounder, and true knack for tipping, deflecting balls that don’t show up on stat sheet.

I was a bit worried about your point of “shooting in a large football stadium” and thought it gave an edge to Wisconsin because they had a game under their belt shooting on that court. It certainly is different, I made a point in another thread how my high school team played a basketball game in the unidome. We won the state championship that year but shot the ball just awful in the dome. Air balls from the FT line, it just looked SO much different.

A great assist man increases the shooting percentage of those he feeds. A great offensive rebounder improves the team scoring ability, as does a great defender limit the opponent’s point production. I could go on......

If Basketball was ONLY about shooting, all the games could be decided by just playing a game of H-O-R-S-E.

2 different players, 2 different mind sets....of course if an easy entry is there you want Keegan to feed LG in low post. Keegan didn't grow up in this game learning to feed the post because of his exceptional skills...his role is to attack either by shooting or putting the ball on the floor which as a Freshman he does incredibly well for a forward....CM's is just the opposite in how he grew in his game...so there is zero comparison in what one sees vrs the other with possession and facing the basket

You aren't wrong. This entire conversation gets old, as all anyone wants is for Iowa to win. This site tracks overall team efficiency with different lineups on the floor.

EvanMiya CBB Analytics

Of the 5-man lineups this season Iowa has used with at least 50 possessions, the Garza/Bohannon/Frederick/Murray/Wieskamp lineup is by far the most efficient in adjusted efficiency margin. The second most efficient lineup is Iowa's starting lineup, so it's not as if that group is bad.

What is also interesting is the teammate chemistry, where the adjusted efficiency is measured when different sets of two teammates are on the floor together. I would encourage folks to look at it. If you go to the Team Breakdown tool and then both the 5-man lineups and the Teammate Chemistry you can see for yourself.

Fran has done a wonderful job with this team. Coaches get criticized all the time, but it's time to give credit where it's due here. I don't know how he did it, but he got this year's team to buy in on defense for the past month or so, and the results have been dramatic. It doesn't mean Iowa will make it out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. Stuff happens. But the team found defense, don't know how. But kudos to Fran.

With that said, when looking at all the regular and advanced stats I don't understand how Murray is not playing 25 minutes per game. I don't even really care who plays less so that he plays more (other than Garza) but he needs to play more. For all the blather here about how the "feeding the post" skill suddenly became the most important skill in all of basketball, the most efficient lineup Iowa has run out there all year involves Murray.

And he still shoots it too much, I don't think he's hit a fg since early in Nebraska when he hit a 3 and Jess hilariously said hes a good shooter. I'm generally not seeing people say connor shouldn't play, I'm just in the camp that anywhere close to 30 mins, especially if keegan is only getting 15 is ridiculous. His clanks are pretty much turnovers that don't show up in the stats

They both can do things to help the team, Keegan just does significantly more of those things and scoring and rebounding/loose balls is at the top of list. He's more disruptive on D too. Keegan making all frosh team proves his talents, connor ever making an all anything team is laughable. I agree with other poster who said having a 56 pct free thrower and generally poor shooter in late is going to cost us

spot on...also, the "elephant" in the room is how much better and more versatile are we Keegan vrs Nunge on both ends of the floor not Keegan vrs CM...I'm guessing your stats would likely bare that out as well....do you have stats for both post Nunge?

Passing is probably the only this Connor does better-and even that at times is overrated. He’s not throwing luka open. He gives him those ball and waits. Unfortunately he’s the beneficiary of a lot of wide open looks because he’s the one designed to make the entry pass. That’s poor design.
Keegan makes everyone better extends processions gets extra processions and cleans up others defensive short comings. I question anyone’s judgement that thinks otherwise.

Fran was a 51% free throw shooter in college.

I wonder how Fran got the nickname "white magic."

CMAC had a pretty good floor game vs a Wisconsin team that didn't really have a scoring PF. In a lot of defensive matchups, Keegan is the better choice at the "4." CMAC is solid role player. I think he'd start on Nebraska, PSU, MSU, ,Minnesota type teams that need leadership. He would barely play at Michigan, OSU, Illinois.

Correct. Connor is a good passer and does a lot of the intangibles well that don't show up in the box score, but the bulk of the work is done by Luka positioning himself on the low block as far as Connor's great post feeds are concerned.

You don’t have a 50% ft shooter in the game late with the lead. That’s idiocy.

Then Fran better bench Weezy at the end of games also. Since Jan 1 Joe has barely shot over 50% (24-42) from the FT line. If your answer is “he’s shown to be a good FT shooter throughout his career I would say so has Connor.
