THE EVENT

I mean with global warming and all that stuff it should get easier to hold it in November year after year.

One sign of relatively uneducated wrestling fans is a big roar on a mat return, which, of course, scores no points. It's not a bad thing, but not necessarily something that really fires up a savvy crowd. I do remember one pretty big roar when one of our guys returned his opponent to the mat and thinking that several thousand in attendance probably figured he scored big there. On the whole, I thought the crowd was about what I expected -- pretty darn loud quite a few times and quite energetic.

I admit, I cheer for those. Because that means our guy is in control. And I know darn well they're not worth any points.

I like 'em too. Looks good on those "soms of a bitches", as my uncle used to say.

I think the notion of doing it once every 5 years or so makes a lot of sense. I'd also love to see this open the door to other "outside the box" ideas to promote the sport. OK, we've held a meet in the football stadium to great success. What's the next "so crazy it can't possibly work" idea?

WTF does Ohio St have to do with it?John Smith was gracious enough to accept the invitation from Iowa so they should be the first call if it is done again.
Chill out dude. They are the defending national champs and the most logical team to wrestle in my make believe Wrigley Field match up. Get a grip.

I'm not sure if this was posted yet but here is the Brands post match press conference.

For the record, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with cheering for a mat return. I'm all for cheering on the Hawks no matter what's happening on the mat. My point was that your typical diehard, knowledgeable wrestling fan is generally going to get more excited about a takedown, back points, a reversal, a hard-faught escape, etc. -- action that scores points -- and the crowd noise typically reflects that.

For example, your typical 8,000 fans in attendance for a Big Ten dual meet are going to make a lot more noise for a scoring move than a mat return. Those fans really know their wrestling and their reactions to the action on the mat show it. On the other hand, your more casual fans may get just as excited about a non-scoring move as a scoring one. Just an observation from the generally more casual (but totally awesome and inspiring) wrestling crowd on Saturday.

I'm all for casual or non-wrestling fans becoming diehards, and I think we probably created some on Saturday. My post above was just an observation on the reactions of a more casual crowd. I certainly didn't mean it to be the least bit condescending to those fans, or any others, for that matter. The more wrestling fans, the merrier!

We have been going to meets for decades and our group gets loud and fired up every time Sammy and others return a guy with authority.
