….the more excited I am for the future of Iowa men’s basketball.

He was on KXNO this morning. He talked about the need to get players into the weight room to make them stronger and more physical. Stressed the importance of hiring an elite level strength and conditioning coach. Finally!

Stated he is not a fan of NIL (prefers to develop players) but knows that is what basketball is now, and will fully embrace it. He wants to build a culture at Iowa. Says Beth is all about winning. Hinted at changes coming to Carver and how he likes “simple” uniforms. Expects to have his coaching staff complete in the next couple of days.

You can tell by listening to him that he has a passion for the University and winning. He’s going to be a good one.

Unfortunately he has one flaw….he pronounced Kirk’s last name as furRENTZ and not FAIRentz. I’m sure that will get corrected soon enough.

Love hearing about the strength and conditioning. Get these guys looking like Big Ten players and able to withstand the physical play.

I'm sure BMC is not the only coach who doesn't care for what NIL is, but it's good to hear that he's realistic about the reality of it and is going to embrace it. There really is no choice.. Adapt for perish. I also feel good that we now have an AD who also is on board with all of this.

I'm excited to see what changes are on the way!

Hmmm

First off, when was the last time that Fran was on KXNO? I'm not a regular listener, but I don't recall reading about any recent interviews he gave on any talk show.

Some classic Iowa uniforms from the past.

The way back machine - The only Iowa team to play for a national championship - 1956.

1200px-1956_Iowa_Hawkeyes.jpg

1970 team. Last sole Big Ten championship for Iowa.

0320basketball_2.jpg

1979 Iowa - Last championship for Iowa.

And for those partial to the script Iowa:

A good start in simplifying the uniforms.

Thanks for the update - good stuff!

I like some of these older uniforms, and I am definitely a fan of keeping things simple. Glad to hear BMc feels the same.

If the uniforms say "Iowa," I would expect them to stick with the branded typeface we have been using across all sports for the past few years. The exception would be the script Iowa, which I think could still be included with at least one of the uniforms.

I am in favor of keeping black, gold, and white variations. That said, for the black and gold versions, I'd like to see only those two colors ... no white.

I also like how some teams have found subtle ways to incorporate a tribute to something about the school, the city, or the state where the team is located. For instance, Wisconsin has the Madison city skyline on the backs of one of their uniforms. I think something like that would be cool, as long as it's subtle (and obviously don't want to do the exact same thing as Wisky or anyone else.)

I’m not sure Fran has ever been on KXNO. McCollum seems to be an engaging guy….unlike Fran who was distant and aloof.

As for uniforms….I like the ‘69-70. That was my first year following Hawkeye basketball.

I'd like to see basketball uniforms take some inspiration from our very simple wrestling singlets. Block IOWA, traditional stripes. Similar style (but not as baggy, obviously) as Michigan's Fab Five era uniforms would be good too.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a jersey like this, IMO. Simple, clean, and good color scheme.

Other than Script Iowa, these are my favorite jerseys of all time.

Miss the old gold court in that picture. I'd like to see that again. The black court was a Steve Alford thing when he was trying to build Iowa basketball into his own kind of brand. I liked it at the time. But it would be really cool to see the old gold parquet floor again. It's been black for 20 plus years now.

While I think the black looks good, I do miss the gold. I suppose it's nostalgia talking, though. I wouldn't mind the giant Herky at mid court, either, like back in the mid 80s.

We'll see how sentimental Ben is when it comes to court paint, jerseys and that sort of thing.

I remember not loving these uniforms at the time, because the yellow-on-black look didn't provide enough contrast. Still, if you wanted to do something a little different, and still be kind of nostalgic, it's an idea.

The mispronunciation of Ferentz is a 500IQ play to remind people to double check they're saying McCollum right.

(am I doing it right? ;) )

love it

he's truly seems to be treating this like the dream job and wanting to build something that can last

big ten basketball is more like football on hardwood, you need big strong bodies to survive
Purdue was about the only team that wasnt out physicaled in the tournament when they lost.

The big ten is behind the curve in terms of what's allowed in college ball.

Technically they didn't win the league. The NCAA voided all of their games that season due to the cheating scandal, but the B1G chose not to name Iowa as the new champion.
"Technically". But in actuality, they did. I don't see anyone on here claiming Iowa's last B10 title came in '97. Myself included.

None of that had even come out by the time they voted on POY, though, so it had no bearing on the vote.

Really happy to hear that about the S&C. IMO, that was a major area of weakness under Fran and ought to be correctable. I noticed that Mascari and Abreu had wide bodies with good lower body strength while Jackson and Stirtz, though not as wide as Mascari and Abreu, had good contact balance and could play physical basketball.

Regarding uniforms, I generally like anything that says the word "Iowa" on it - especially the script uniforms.
