The oars on Minnesota's boat fell off and sank to the bottom of Lake Minnetonka

The players outside of Croft leaving did very little on the field and Croft was as bad a big 10 qb I have ever seen.
Most didn’t fit into Pj’s style and maybe some were tired of him already. Who knows. I don’t expect the gophers to be any better next year either. Maybe ‘19 they will hit 6 wins.

Well next year according to PJ is year one since this was only year zero so in PJ’s mind can make a bowl by “year 2”.

Sure all the seniors this year really appreciated this year zero BS.

Not saying Croft was the answer at Minnesota but he was not horrible. I'm not going to look up his game log but Fleck started him the 2nd half at Michigan State and he torched them for 3TDs. ...and of course he almost won the Heisman running the ball against Nebraska.
MSU had gone prevent for all of the 4th quarter and Nebraska has a terrible D as everyone saw throughout this season.
The last 5 games Croft has 0 TD passes while going 28-75 with 3 games of under 100 yards passing with 4 INTs.
I will adjust my previous statement, Croft was as bad of a big 10 qb as I’ve seen the last 5 weeks of the season throwing the ball.

Those seniors had 3 different head coaches in 3 years. Fleck’s goal was to purge them out. Noticed some that started previously never sniffed the field this year.

A rowboat thread without any rowboats? Lame.

And the OLine will still be a sieve. And the receivers still can't catch the ball. And the Dbacks still can't tackle.
But yeah... this guy will take the Gophs back to the success of TC and Kill.;) Just try and stay ahead of Illinois next season.

OL, Db's, receivers,.............I thought Fleck inherited all this 9-4 talent?

So which is it?

I'll write it again.

PJ Fleck will win at Minnesota. He will win a West crown within 4 years. I've met him and have seen him interact with young players. He is real and genuine. What comes off as schtick is the way he really is, and when you learn why he developed that kind of exuberant approach, then you cannot help but admire him for it.

Long story short - Extraordinarily hard worker defies odds and makes it to the NFL, coaches the same way, tragically loses son, tries to bury himself in work to cope and loses his wife, has epiphany that he must live his son's life for him, develops row-the-boat metaphor to focus on moving forward through the grief and any other challenges, commits to living life fully and helping others do so. His son's death changed him.

After I spent time with him and watched him interact with people, I wanted my son to play for him.

PJ Fleck will win at Minnesota.

Every single person on the planet who has lost a child has been changed forever. That's nothing new. The difference is if you can get back up from it. Obviously he's been able to do that.

One approach is you coach to the strength of your team. Obviously Fleck didn't do that. Is that concept lost on you?

Great story..... He isn't winning a west crown within 4 years. Wiscy is in the driver seat next year but we have a very favorable schedule. Wiscy isn't going to fall off the map and Nebraska has a really easy schedule for 2019. (Not to mention that will be Stanley's etc senior year) 2020 will be his best chance but they still go to msu, wiscy and Nebraska and and have us, mich and NW at home. 2021 the schedule gets even worse.

I agree that Fleck is a fine coach. He may even get Minnesota back up to Glenn Mason or Jerry Kill levels ... but to compete at a high level in the Big 10 is not an easy thing to do. Many excellent coaches with more impressive resumes have tried their hands at coaching in the Big 10 ... and got their hands slapped in the process. Even just at Michigan ... they took two rising coaching prospects (Rich Rod and Hoke) ... and even with the fan-support, facilities, resources, and elite-reruiting ... and they couldn't "win" at Michigan.

Winning in he B1G West isn't going to be getting any easier either ... Chryst has formed a great staff that isn't going anywhere. Iowa had a "transition" year breaking in a new OC and offense ... and still managed to woodshed OSU and pull off a 7-5 record. Brohm has proven to be a magician at Purdue .... if he can retain his staff there ... they demonstrated more signs of life than the fighting Flecks of Minnesota. Lastly, suppose the Huskers actually can find pay dirt with a new coach? They have the facilities, the fan-base, and the recruiting draw to quickly rise in the B1G West. Lastly, Northwestern is like a mirror of Iowa ... just with different schemes. Fitz knows how to win at Northwestern ... and for as long as he's the Wildcat coach, they will be tough.

Right now, the fighting Flecks can hang their hats on not quite being the dumpster fire that Illinois program has become. Even then, the Illini were historically young ... so maybe even they can show some signs of life as they become more experienced?

So I give Minnesota a 0% chance of winning the B1G west in the next 4 years. What he did at Western Michigan WAS impressive ... but he's no longer in the MAC!

I don’t know if PJ will be successful or not (it is Minnesota after all), but I would not read too much into players leaving, it happens with coaching changes. Plus, PJ’s personality is not for everyone, some are motivated and some are put off.

I watched the video and the guy is still a blow hard. I get that you are endeared to his story and would never wish the death of a child on my worst enemy. Like most successful people he has a mantra. That being said he isn't winning the west anytime soon. I was in MN for 6 days over thanksgiving, I asked every person I could talk to about the extension( we visited my in-laws and the nephew's had hockey tournaments I talked to alot of the dad's and spent about 2-3 hours in sports bars between games each day) the response is blah, they just don't care. I asked a guy about his game that day (wiscy) and he said "we played 2 days ago" thinking I was talking about the Vikings. IC, Linc, Madison even little Evanston is starting to care about CFb. The twin cities care about the vikings, wild and twins/twolves. He might build them into 8-4 9-3 which would be a yowmans effort. But he isnt winning the west.

Your are correct. Thanks for being reasonable. I find it funny that other people are trashing MN football when you beat us at Kinnick 17-10 and could of very easily lost, and lost to Purdue. Your were 7-5 and 4-5. That's impressive. MN will be a completely different team next year. They will be younger but actually better. In two years we will be competing for the West Division Championship. The new quarterback Viramontes didn't go to Michigan because they wanted to move him to a different position, he then went to Cal and Sonny Dykes left and Viramontes wasn't happy with the new coach so he went the JC route. You can trash Gopher's football all you want, but we will have the last laugh, including a win next year at TCF Bank Stadium against the Hawks.

Iowa's true sophomore QB threw for 25 tds with 6 picks. So we kinda like our guy too, who has done it in the B1G. Our DL is stacked 1-8 like I don't believe I have ever seen it. Same with our secondary. So with all due respect, guarantees aside, let's play the game, just for fun.

No doubt, Iowa played poorly against Minnesota in '17. What's more, the Gopher game was just our true freshman RT's 3rd game starting ... and the Gophers fielded a somewhat decent defense this season.

Iowa's offense is in a somewhat similar situation to the Minnesota offense in terms of having a new system and a new staff ... however, Iowa owns the advantage of already having a quarterback with a season of starts within the system.

The Gopher D may improve too ... however, Iowa's D was exceedingly young in the secondary this year AND the D was relatively "soft" by Iowa's standards in terms of run-D. Part of this was attributable to the fact that Iowa only had one senior on the DL. While Iowa's D will presumably have some hiccups in terms of breaking in all-new starters at LB ... essentially the rest of the D returns intact. I look for many facets of Iowa D to make marked improvements from '17 to '18.

Consequently, you may have to hold your breath as it relates to having the laugh at TCF Bank Stadium next year ... because the match-up of Iowa's DL and secondary against a newer QB doesn't favor the Gophers whatsoever!

Sounds like their starting QB and others are transferring out. Maybe the ridiculous schtick of the used car salesman is wearing thin
He landed the number 1, dual-threat juco QB. They're not going to play, so they're moving on. If I were a Gopher, I wouldn't care because the guys stunk!

Yeah I doubt they are scared of that juco QB. Minnesota will not be better next year. That is funny.

More kids leave the more schollies he has to give out to players he wants. I believe he wants kids to JUMP SHIP!

It plays well to the fans and lessens the pressure to win in the first 2-3 years.
All season long it was considered year 0.

I think Claeys would have produced a better record with these players than Fleck did. He's not as pretty as Fleck, but got more effort out of the players overall. Just mho.

They would have finished dead last in recruiting last year. Ok, so Claeys would have gone 6-6.........YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Overall, Croft was very inconsistent and not real good. The new recruit is a very good runner, big with good speed, and appears to throw the ball pretty well. I liked the kid's video...just being a realist.

Yeah I've heard that last 3 years and Iowa has won them all. When you've gone 8 quarters with out scoring to end the season forgive us outsider who think Minnesota offense will suck again next year.

I'm kind of conflicted regarding Fleck.

Part of me feels sympathy for the guy for the personal tragedies he has suffered. The other part of me feels disgusted by him because I sense that he is a too aggressive with his approach to the point that it feels like he is trying to capitalizing on the misfortune.

Credit is due for his WMU success. He is in a whole other league now. He may improve the Gopher program over time but propping him up as some kind of wizard is meaningless. I see where Frost is bringing a title back to Nebraska in the very near future also. Hype doesn't win football games.

An offense can suck and still beat Iowa. You do realize this right?

Your offense sucks too. If you don't believe me, I can pull up various threads on your offensive coordinator not being good.

I knew about losing the child, that is horrible. How did he lose his wife? Accident? Illness?

Yep Iowa offense played horrible and still beat your mighty boat rowers. As bad as Iowa's offense was at times least it isn't Minnesota's...8 quarters with out a point to end the year. Great stuff
