Yes, but not the same as the example I was talking about. In the USA get your license and you can get married in the church, if you wish, and have the minister,priest sign for it. You are married ! Or... you can go civil only. In the country I visited the official wedding was before the civil official. The church wedding was the one all the friends and relatives went to, but the priest could not sign for their marriage and in the eyes of the govmt they were not married until the second civil "ceremony", such as it was, with just the witnesses there. Like I said, in the USA it's either/or, not both.You still have to get a marriage license here even if you are married in the church. You can actually be married by a civil representative, notary public will do, or any ordained minister. I know of people ordained online that can perform marriages.
