The racism on this board is reprehensible

Colored was the accepted term by whites during Jim Crow. In the 60s blacks preferred Negro. Later on in the 70s, Black became the preference. Then In the 80s, Jesse Jackson made a push to prefer African American because most black Americans cannot identify one particular country in Africa that our ancestors are from. Current DNA methods can identify that now. My preference is black.
So it sounds like I had the timeline a little off. Thank you for the correction. Still, the fact that the organization was named National Association for the Advancement of Colored People would indicate that it was not just something derogatory during Jim Crow, but was a somewhat accepted term, would it not?

The re-emergence of the R word on here is one of the sadder things to have happened. I always appreciated your bedside manner coaching people why that word is problematic. Now I see it being thrown around all the time and certain posters seem to revel in using it.

It’s like the GOP was hijacked by 15 year old boys.

It's used by both sides. And if you doubt me, I can provide a list of quotes from liberals on this forum.

The NAACP was founded in the early 1900s I believe. Even though they used colored in the name, Negro was actually the preferred name used by blacks during that time. Black author and civil rights activist, DR. W.E.B. DuBois used the term Negro in his writings during this time. In other writings during that time I do not remember reading books by other blacks using colored. Some may have as nothing is really absolute. I am not sure why the NAACP never changed their name to remove the word colored. My guess on why they kept it is that it is a symbol, a reminder on how things were during that time. Who knows.

Since your last one disowned you out of pure disappointment, don't worry - this Daddy loves you.

Oh, Papa, you don't have to justify all the time you spend here running down your state, country and the American way of life! I couldn't be entertained riding an E-bike all day either. I do wish I had the spare time you do, to sneak around here like a dumb bitch cuck and spy on everyone's posting metrics! It must be fascinating...........to you........

I think it was the accepted term at the time. I believe it replaced the term Negro. I remember the United Negro College Fund. I assume it was started when negro was the accepted term. I think the accepted term then became Colored People. Hence, the NAACP. I don’t think either of these organizations names nor the organizations themselves were meant to be derogatory or racist. After colored people came Black people, and after that came African-American.
I started wanting to move away from African American when ESPN used it to describe Lewis Hamilton, after winning a race, who is BRITISH. It was suddenly universal for anyone anywhere who was black.

Yeah, there's a bit of a foucauld-esque quality to the language control in play here.

African-American was always designed to invoke memories of slavery. I jam frequently with a Jamaican guy, he hates the term.
Nope. African American has was not designed to invoke memories of slavery. Rev. Jesse Jackson lead the change because most blacks in the US do not know their country of origin like most whites and Hispanics. It was designed to at least signify the continent of our origin. Most blacks do not even know the names of their enslaved ancestors as most of the slave owners did not include their names. That were only referred to as numbers in the record books.

Interesting. That said, it’s continued use vs just black (like we’re called white) does serve some political agendas. Nobody refers to me as European America. Just a white guy or American. (Even though my family are much more recent immigrants).
Either way, I’m weary of the constant race bating from all directions. I don’t care what color your skin is, just be a decent human being and you’re cool in my book.

The term African American has absolutely nothing to do with race baiting. In the 80s during its inception, the gist was to give black Americans some pride of where they came from since we did not know which country. Talk to any white, Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, or even an African immigrant and they can tell you within one second what country they or their ancestors came from.

One of my best friends is originally from Trinidad. He doesn’t like being labeled African American either because of the vast cultural differences growing up with systemic racism in the US vs. what he experienced in Trinidad - which would be more akin to growing up white in the US.

Only after moving here and becoming a citizen did he start to see all the racial inequities and differences. So he believes the term African American should not be used more broadly because of those differences.

i think it's ok because it involves using three words rather than one; also, it might be ok to use the uk english spelling. ;) (FWIW, i also thought 'black' had become passe.)

Seriously Tom, I'm in your boat, and will never forget the day in 1983 that I wished the earth would suddenly open up and swallow the front-end grocery store manager who was training me as a cashier, when in the course of teaching us all of the codes for the vegetables, said "these are collard greens, which you can remember because collard people eat collard greens."
😳

People of color is ok but colored people is bad. Homeless is bad, but unhoused is ok. African American is ok, unless you are referring to a white African American. (Elon) Gay is ok unless you are a gay women then you must be referred to as a lesbian. He and she are bad but they is ok. Just trying to keep up..........

He doesn’t like it because he wasn’t born and raised in the US as a black American. He hasn’t heard the stories of his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. that either lived or know what it’s like to live in the US during Jim Crow. This applies to African immigrants as well. The black American experience is a culture all its own. Blacks from other parts of the globe cannot relate so to speak. Most of these folks have never experienced racism until they step foot in the US. Blacks from the Caribbean seem to be cool with black Americans from what I see. However, back in college in the 80s, African students seemed kinda stand off’ish or look down towards black Americans. Not sure if it’s still the case today. I’m generalizing I know but they never seemed to assimilate in the black American culture.

Just like other cultures, one should recognize the difference between race and ethnicity and the varying scope of subcultures among people of African descent. It annoys me that many Americans don’t understand the distinctiveness of Asian ethnicities.

Nevertheless, for anyone who doesn’t realize how offensive it is to refer to a Black American as colored is clueless and an imbecile. That racist poster clearly is not culturally competent. I am just perplexed that someone would think that is okay in 2025.

Thank you for speaking up. In defense, the openly racist on here are like 3 guys with 300 accounts.

Nah! more than that. And "colored people' is a racist code. It's also a term by with people limited life experience.

I go down this rabbit hole on the Purdue board daily. The concept of race is a made up construct by European white supremacist scientists back in the 15th or 16th centuries despite what they taught us in school that there were 3 races, white, black and mongoloid (Asian). Modern anthropologists will agree that there are no such thing as the 3 races of humans like we were taught in school. Just different cultures and ethnicities like you were saying. Those quack racist scientists would measure the skulls of the so called whites and blacks. They would document that if the so-called white skull was larger than the so-called black skull then the so-called white race was more intelligent.

Not exactly true.

Inform me. I was raised in the Civil Rights era (maybe you were too). "Colored People" and "Whites "Only" were typical references, and nomenclature used to label facilities. If you haven't heard colored people used as a polite avoidance to n.....g...r in redneckville, you don't live in subject area or haven't spent time in one.

Maybe I’m too young but I don’t recall the “3 races” unit in any of my formative years

I grew up in the 70s and the 3 races of white, black, and Asian was known to me in grade school. Then officially taught in social studies in junior high and high school. Then in the 80s my freshman roommate took an anthropology elective and we discussed from time to time his topics. They all wrong back then.
