Even though i'm just looking forward to the 2016-2017 season in general, I thought i'd specify what in particular I am most looking forward to (not counting B1G's and NCAA's).
1. The debut of Kemdawg. We all knew he would be good when he was recruited, but i'm getting excited about just HOW good he will be. He can get to the legs of anybody in the country at his weight, of that I am sure. Someone posted in another topic a few weeks ago that he will be the type of guy to put bonus up on Top 10 wrestlers. I'm firmly on board that train, because he has already done so. As a True Freshman he annihilated Geo Martinez something like 16-3, who went on to AA at NCAAs beating Sueflohn in the R12. His only two losses to Sueflohn(R12 something like 2-3 times?) and Richardson(Former AA), I personally felt he was the better wrestler in both, but looked as if he made some typical 'freshman mistakes' (similar to Clarks true freshman campaign at the Midlands) in his 8-7 and 11-9 losses respectively. He let off the gas a bit against Sueflohn who mounted a comeback against him after he scored 3 first period TD's, and with Richardson that was a really weird match, and I felt that he lost that one on the mat in some odd top/bottom scrambles, with a lot of time being wasted. If I had to guess right now, I'd say he will be in the 2-4 range on the podium come NCAAs, which may be a bold prediction, but thats what the off season is for, right?
2. The 'Big 3' Duals. Penn St, Ohio St, and Okie St. I'm not as concerned with the overall outcome of the duals (but hey, winning is awesome) as I am with particular individual matchups in each dual. Namely the ones I am most anxiously awaiting are..
Kemerer vs Smith
Kemerer vs Nolf
Marinelli vs Rogers
Marinelli vs Joseph
Clark vs Brock
Clark vs Cortez
Gilman vs Suriano
Gilman vs Tomasello
Stoll vs Nevills
Brooks vs Boyd
Sorensen vs Jordan
Meyer vs Nickal
Meyer vs Jordan
I think these matches will help establish a 'pecking order' to base predictions off of, and some of these matchups will be critical to our title hopes come NCAAs. Not to mention importance for seeding.
3. Will the Bull redshirt or no? At this point, it looks like Marinelli is ready to go if called upon, and all signs are leading to him being called upon to help win a team title this year. If he does go, how does he stack up against the wealth of talent that has migrated into the 165 lb weight class this season. I think a lot of people are underestimating The Bull due to being a true freshman and because of that Mark Hall loss. I think he very well may have a Myles Martin type season. An NCAA title probably isn't in the cards, but I'm thinking he may take a few lumps during the regular season similar to Martin last year, and then turn it on big time at B1Gs and NCAA's, hopefully equating to a podium finish for the Bull in a stacked weight.
Honorable Mention: The team race. There are a LOT of dangerous teams out there, other than the 'Big 4', there is VTech, Mizzou, and Michigan with incredibly strong teams. Their wrestlers will undoubtedly affect the outcome of the team title. Whether its keeping a stud from Iowa/OSU/tOSU/PSU off of the podium, or getting upset, making one of those podium spots available. I don't think any of them will win it, but they could definitely play spoiler to a team trophy place, and spoiler for team title chances to any of those teams.
What are the things you guys are most anticipating about this upcoming season?
