Things I'm anticipating the most next season

Even though i'm just looking forward to the 2016-2017 season in general, I thought i'd specify what in particular I am most looking forward to (not counting B1G's and NCAA's).

1. The debut of Kemdawg. We all knew he would be good when he was recruited, but i'm getting excited about just HOW good he will be. He can get to the legs of anybody in the country at his weight, of that I am sure. Someone posted in another topic a few weeks ago that he will be the type of guy to put bonus up on Top 10 wrestlers. I'm firmly on board that train, because he has already done so. As a True Freshman he annihilated Geo Martinez something like 16-3, who went on to AA at NCAAs beating Sueflohn in the R12. His only two losses to Sueflohn(R12 something like 2-3 times?) and Richardson(Former AA), I personally felt he was the better wrestler in both, but looked as if he made some typical 'freshman mistakes' (similar to Clarks true freshman campaign at the Midlands) in his 8-7 and 11-9 losses respectively. He let off the gas a bit against Sueflohn who mounted a comeback against him after he scored 3 first period TD's, and with Richardson that was a really weird match, and I felt that he lost that one on the mat in some odd top/bottom scrambles, with a lot of time being wasted. If I had to guess right now, I'd say he will be in the 2-4 range on the podium come NCAAs, which may be a bold prediction, but thats what the off season is for, right?

2. The 'Big 3' Duals. Penn St, Ohio St, and Okie St. I'm not as concerned with the overall outcome of the duals (but hey, winning is awesome) as I am with particular individual matchups in each dual. Namely the ones I am most anxiously awaiting are..
Kemerer vs Smith
Kemerer vs Nolf
Marinelli vs Rogers
Marinelli vs Joseph
Clark vs Brock
Clark vs Cortez
Gilman vs Suriano
Gilman vs Tomasello
Stoll vs Nevills
Brooks vs Boyd
Sorensen vs Jordan
Meyer vs Nickal
Meyer vs Jordan

I think these matches will help establish a 'pecking order' to base predictions off of, and some of these matchups will be critical to our title hopes come NCAAs. Not to mention importance for seeding.

3. Will the Bull redshirt or no? At this point, it looks like Marinelli is ready to go if called upon, and all signs are leading to him being called upon to help win a team title this year. If he does go, how does he stack up against the wealth of talent that has migrated into the 165 lb weight class this season. I think a lot of people are underestimating The Bull due to being a true freshman and because of that Mark Hall loss. I think he very well may have a Myles Martin type season. An NCAA title probably isn't in the cards, but I'm thinking he may take a few lumps during the regular season similar to Martin last year, and then turn it on big time at B1Gs and NCAA's, hopefully equating to a podium finish for the Bull in a stacked weight.

Honorable Mention: The team race. There are a LOT of dangerous teams out there, other than the 'Big 4', there is VTech, Mizzou, and Michigan with incredibly strong teams. Their wrestlers will undoubtedly affect the outcome of the team title. Whether its keeping a stud from Iowa/OSU/tOSU/PSU off of the podium, or getting upset, making one of those podium spots available. I don't think any of them will win it, but they could definitely play spoiler to a team trophy place, and spoiler for team title chances to any of those teams.

What are the things you guys are most anticipating about this upcoming season?

1) Gilman and Clark win NCAA Titles
2) Marinelli decision
3) Solidify 141. Someone takes the job and makes a run at AA
4) Can Iowa make a run at PSU in March

1. The team race - There are 4 really good teams that are in the mix this year. They are all very close and there is no clear favorite at this point.

2. Kemmerer - He is going to be very good. I would pick him to beat everyone but Nolf next year. Really want to see that matchup with Nolf. Is it competitive, does he stand a chance.

3. Bonus points - I really want to see Iowa start racking up the bonus points. Bonus points have been huge for Penn State in their recent title runs, and they still have guys like Nolf and Rethorford who just seem to put up bonus in nearly every match. If we're going to beat Penn State at nationals, we need our studs to match bonus points. I think Gman, Kemmerer, and Stoll lead the way for us here.

I don't care about bonus point. They've been the difference in the NCAA's maybe three times since 2000. Stay healthy, win your match, move on. Go Hawks! [EDIT: I gotta say, though, I hate seeing our guys wrestle not to lose. When we dominate, the bonus points come. Hope we're turning the corner on that.]

How can you say bonus hasn't made a difference at NCAAs. All we needed was one more pin or tech to pass VT, and 3 more bonus point wins would have passed TOSU. I'd sure as heck rather be 3rd then where we were.

Your edit, is very contradictory. Yes, we need to dominate which means bonus points. When we wrestle close we lose matches we shouldn't. It all ties together back to dominance and our guys need to do a better job of dominating. How will we know if they're dominating? Bonus points.

While I am a huge fan of Kemerer I think peoples expectations are a little too high. He is moving up to a weight class he has never wrestled before when he's not particularly big for one he was at. Would you expect Clark to win 141? I think KEM is great and will have a super career but 2nd next year is out of the realm IMO. Guys like Jo jo Smith and Palacio are great not to mention big. I'm glad Kem/Sorenson decided on weights now and not when the season starts. I think we'll see a pretty stout Kem next year.

Was there confirmation of weight for BS and Kemerer?

From what I was told yes.

Notice that he did not cut down for UWW juniors and elected to wrestle at 154(I think that's the weight) at Universities.
As stated before it was pretty obvious from Universities. The initial plan was to cut down for the Junior team. That changed and ended the suspense afaic.
I agree that the mentioned is a strong indicator to 49/57 question, but I wouldn't call it confirmation.

He jumped from 5th at 125 to 2nd at 133. I see no reason to think Clark wouldn't be a finalist at 141. Who would be so much better than him? Thorn, Merideth?

Cause he's small. If he can do it he should. The top end talent at 41 isn't as good as 33. 41 is just incredibly deep. I suppose Heil and McKenna will be top 2. There's some big time freshman that might have something to say though.

Also...awesome post LAX. Another thing I'm looking forward to is Spencer Lee, Justin Mejia, Luke Troy and of course JRent sign on the dotted line...if just to have opposing fans like Flying Tiger shedding crocodile tears about how they are genuinely concerned (ahem) about Iowa having too many little guys...cause its soooo different than having a glut of wrestler at 157-174 but its ok because...PSU...dodgeball.

Add Warner and Berge to that list and I'm running naked through the streets!

1st annual HR undie run? Just a suggestion but we could hold it down here in Az in conjunction with ASU's in Tempe. Except we won't run...just sit outside and drink beer in our robes and boxers celebrating Iowa's recruiting success and the fitness level of ASU female undergrads. Even included a dude in there for Wendy and Fortunata.

I like the suggestion based on possible cold weather in Iowa during November. But then I can't use the cold as an excuse for it being so small.

I was about to say the same thing bro. We should have a gathering of idiots and do the blood round hungover or something in solidarity with all the wrestler's trying to make the trek to AA.

Hangovers are for Saturday morning consolations, the blood round you should be buzzed pretty good after the afternoon intermission

Spyker will be lamenting Spencer Lees "mistake" for years to come. After every single piece of PSU-positive news gets posted, like clockwork, there's spyker, "hopefully spencer will realize his mistake before it's too late And chooses our superior coaching staff to make him the great wrestler he can be!!!!!!!!!"

Spencer could be a 4x undefeated champ, world champ and Olympian and he would still talk about how 'good he could have been' at PSU under Cael.

I predict that Flo would rank Gulibon ahead of him. And of course it would be trouble for Clark if Zane Richards went up from 125.

Unlike Beatlejuice, it only takes one mention for me to appear. First let me say how refreshing it is to see you living in the future instead of the past. Remember tomorrow is always a day away.

PSU doesn't have anything near the log jam that potentially could happen at Iowa's lower weights. From this past season, you have 4 120s and a 113 coming in. That's 5 guys to fill 125 and 133. This is unprecedented! The math simply doesn't work. Brands has a history of over recruiting weights and it hasn't worked out so well. Last year how many 149s did you guys have, Sorenson, Grothus, Cooper, Kemerer. How many true 157s? In the end I hope Tom gives all these guys lots of money to keep them committed, but I suspect some of the formal offers that come out in a few weeks are scaled back in light of Lee and Teasdale. This might make one or two of those guys rethink their decision, but the then again, maybe not. It will be interesting to follow, that's for sure.

Give money to these guy's? All Tom would have to do is just get on the phone and call sanderson and ask how he does it without getting caught.

It's been along time since I've seem the movie - how do we get Beetlejuice to go away?

use your imagination a little. High School kids grow, college kids grow, wrestlers lift weights and put on muscle. Redshirt years mean you can juggle starting line-ups if you have lotsa studs.

You see boys? He even uses exclamation points!! to show his concern. How nice.

I guess what he forgot to mention is that two of the aforementioned guys verbally committed two years ago in their sophomore year! Another just verbally committed in their sophomore year! What does this mean? They committed to Iowa virtually sight unseen...meaning Brands couldn't recruit or even contact them because it would have been illegal! The fifth one is an Iowa guy. With all of the talent coming in, he still chose Iowa!

Oh yea...Guess you forgot to mention that the one that wrestled 113 this year just held his own against legit college 125's in two tournaments...and he has three years until he hits the mat! Not bad for a high school 113.

The only recruit in the group, one of the best in the nation, did make his choice after weighing all of his options to include Penn State...and guess what? He still chose Iowa!

So stop fretting my flying feline friend. Worry about Manville, Hall, Nolf, Hall, Bo, Rasheed, Cenzo etc and where they are going to fit at 157-184...hope Nolf doesn't hit a growth spurt! plus the Nevills bro coming in, Cassar, and the other guy for 197.
