Back to the old let'em live on 3rd and anything. It's killed Iowa the past 3 or 4 years and it's rearing it's ugly head again. Sad !!

Yeah this is only a problem at Iowa. Honestly I have not seen a team that gives up these long yardage plays like Iowa does particularly on 3rd and 4th down....and against average teams no less.
Said it before, our defense was the biggest problem last year. They're not good enough for a Big Ten title threat as of now.
We were never gonna compete with OSU or MSU to begin with.
Well... I thought Dolph said they were 7-21 on third down. I was really frustrated with our lack of ability to stop the run at times but I feel like all of their 3rd down conversions came on 3 drives.
The worst part about it is they were gashing us with what appeared to be the same play, no fullback, handoff out of the shotgun and just run around Ott's end and they nailed us for about 8 yards a pop what seemed like about 10 in a row for that play. That said, we've been famous for giving up 3rd and forever (and against Pitt 4th and 15 to ice the game), but this years Defense is heads and tails above last years IMO, regardless of any stats for or against. The Linebackers aren't the greatest in the country by any stretch, but they are making plays all over the field, and not 10 yards downfield. This group is FAR and AWAY better than last years crew. King is King, Lomax is playing well I think. It's all better to this point. Pass rush needs some work as it always does but...... Competition is riveting up, so we'll see what they've got. We're 4-0 and don't have TCU's Defense, all good things...........

What's scary about that too is that Maryland Minnesota used that same shotgun handoff and stretch play to whoop us last year.. Those are two teams that don't look good right now but will be dangerous because we don't set the edge well..

If it was 3rd and whatever, why don't you tell me how they somehow managed to not pickup first downs on the 14 3rd and whatever's they didn't succeed on.

For the season, Iowa's defense has given up 22 first downs out of 62 attempts, currently ranking 64th in third down defense in the FBS. Meanwhile, Michigan State is ranked 84th, giving up 22 first downs in 54 attempts. Draw your own conclusions.This is what we call the ole "Im pissed off after a win" scenario.
